However, my first 2 times were unsuccessful because they were closed and I had other places to be so we didn't stay. The 2nd time we came for a play day with my daughter but she fell asleep and I didn't want to wake her so I waited for her to wake up and just browsed around and played on the swings for a bit. This time we actually made it on time for play time. Very packed house today but it was a fun experience for my daughter. Especially since she's an only child. I highly recommend! It's FREE!! FYI we were informed today that the library will be closing Jan 26th until May sometime I'm glad we experienced the old version of this beautiful library! Excited to see the remodeled/ renovated version once it's done!

In my previous years, the Cody Library was my usual spot, but since this one is close to where I live, I went here. It took less time to vote than it took to drive here! The whole experience was fast, easy, and free of stress. The folks helping us get settled were also polite and friendly, and they didn't make us feel rushed. This amazing library is located in the heart of downtown and was built by renowned Mexican architect, Ricardo Legorreta. The building is absolutely stunning and has actually been featured in Hollywood movies. If you love art as much as I do you'll be happy to hear that they have a Chihuly inside the library, as well as other pieces of art by very popular artists. The San Antonio Central Library is so much more than a local library. Within the building, you can find other nonprofits that help support small businesses in our community, as well as numerous events they host almost daily. One of my favorite parts about the SA Central Library is their second-hand bookstore located in the basement. You can find some true gems in there, and all the money raised from sales goes back to the library. If you have children I highly recommend exploring their kids' section. My kid loves to play in that area and the staff there is always amazing! Last but not least, the library has its own parking lot and you can get up to three hours of free parking when visiting. You just have to validate your ticket at one of the kiosks located by the entrance.

What I didn't expect was the art. They have a gallery area with rotating exhibits, and the pieces they had up when I went were actually really nice. It didn't feel like a typical library moment at all. I also wandered upstairs and there's this big blown glass sculpture that's hard to miss. Super pretty and kind of unexpected. I didn't check out any books or anything, so I can't speak to that side of it, but if you're nearby, it's worth popping in just to walk around for a bit.

Bright, calm, and welcoming, it's the kind of place where you'll see a mix of people studying, kids discovering new books, and neighbors popping in to pick up their holds. It feels like a true community space. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and everything runs so smoothly. Libraries are truly one of the best public resources we have, and Cody Branch does it especially well. One of my favorite things is using the mySAPL app to request books, and then getting the notification that they're ready for pickup. When I walk in and see my little stack waiting for me on the hold shelf, it feels like the best kind of VIP treatment. No searching, no stress! Just grab your books and go. Their schedule is online and while they don't have as many story time events as I would like, they are quite popular and well done. Arrive a few minutes early to get a ticket for entry. The library itself is clean and welcoming with kids art and games around. The child area has small seating and dedicated computers for appropriate games. I like that the board books are in an elevated bin to easily sort through. Staff at the checkout/info desk were kind and helpful, too. Bonus points for having a playground a few steps away too. I also got my mom signed up for a library card for the first time in decades and it was a quick and easy process.

I did come in specifically looking for kid's Christmas books and was hoping to see a display or 2 in the kids area. Unfortunately there was no Christmas books anywhere and I had to go search which I wasn't that familiar with so I asked for help and someone did help but came up with one Christmas book and that was it. So just a suggestion , around the holidays it would be super aww for a display with those books to be put together. Other than that I as well as my 4 year old had a good time.
