The flavors lacked the depth and punch you expect from good Peruvian cuisine, and nothing on the plate felt memorable. With another Peruvian option in the area, it's hard to justify spending time or money at Mishqui. If you're craving Peruvian food, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. I got one Peruvian and one Colombian vegan empanada, the tallarines verdes lomo al jugo, and the tres leches cake. The empanadas were both tasty. I wasn't sure if I'd like the vegan filling, but it was pretty good. Huge portion for the pasta dish, I had two extra meals from it. First time trying the pasta. It was an interesting alternative to the lomo saltado with rice. Finally, we got to take the dessert to go which was a nice option because we were stuffed. The tres leches cake was so good! Very moist, cinnamon forward, and not too sweet. It was my first time trying their desserts and I would highly recommend. I had a bite of the flan and that was very delicious as well. This place is a gem. I've been several times to their Monona location and their newer Middleton location. Favorites: ceviche (seafood mix) & lomo saltado. The empanadas are also delicious. I never have room for dessert, but they have a whole dessert case and you can always take dessert home! Also, they have consistently been an option for Madison Restaurant Week. So if you haven't tried them out, try them during MRW! There is a large variety of items on their menu and if you are looking for delicious food and food that can meet several dietary accommodations, this is the place. They offer vegan and gluten free options. Their menu is labeled too with these options. Service is great --- everyone is so nice! I stopped by to have a lunch on a weekday. The place was not too busy. I went with the crowd favorite item - Pescado frito / whole fish fry. It was simply the best fish fry I ever had. The fish was big, enough for more than one person. But it tasted so good, I finished the whole thing in a sitting. The fish was fried crispy. I ate almost everything, including skin and some tender bones in the head. I ate everything I can chew and swallow. There was rice and fried plantains on the side. Also it came with a side of salad, which was very good as well. I went for my favorite Peruvian drink, chicha morada. That was good too. read more

We came as a group of three and this was all around, a really great meal! I feel like everything was made fresh, and while service took a little bit longer than we expected, I think it was well worth the wait and for the quality. We started with the yuca frita, which was so perfectly crispy and with the creamy, savory, sauce, it is just the perfect way to star tthe meal! We also did two Peruvian empanadas, which weren't too memorable, but were still delicious (because who doesn't love an empanada?). The pork bites with tostones will be beloved by any meat lovers in the group, and I particularly enjoyed the salsa criolla that comes with it. For mains, we did aji de gallina, which was good, but nothing that will blow your mind - it is a comforting, approachable dish for anyone new to Peruvian cuisine. We also did the whole fish, and then a seafood rice combo. All of the mains, I think, were excellent, and my favorite was the whole fish! This was our second visit. This time for lunch. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful. Any questions we had were answered the best they could. Lunch time was nice and quiet, with plenty of choice of seating...AND plenty of choices in the sweets case!!!! The carrot cake..... ohhhhhhh the carrot cake!!!!! That frosting was.... Delicious!!! One side note, they do implement an automatic gratuity, so be prepared to spend a tad more than what the menu says. It is posted at all the tables AND at the counter, they are not hiding it, they do state that it is a gratuity, that is shared with the staff. Just be ready for it. Mishqui was surprisingly busy on the Sunday evening we stopped in for dinner. I finally made it to this popular restaurant that my wife had already dined at and loved. After starting with a Peruvian beer (though I was tempted to get an Inka Cola) I ordered the ground beef Peruvian empanada which was very good. It had an interesting sweetness to it. My wife declared that the vegan empanada was excellent (way better than the chicken one). We then split the jerk pork fried rice which was very tasty and a large portion. The service was friendly and efficient. They automatically add on a 15% gratuity to all bills so be ready. The prices were reasonable and there were a number of dishes I wanted to try. I've eaten in many Peruvian restaurants around the country (my dad was Peruvian) and this is among the most authentic I've tried. It's not fancy, but the menu has many traditional favorites on it. They also have a nice selection of Peruvian non-alcoholic beverages, beer, and spirits. I'll have to come back for dinner some time so I can try their pisco sour. My ceviche was straight forward, super fresh, and delicious. The house salad has a nice mix of fresh greens, red onion, avocado, and hard boiled egg with a very tasty house dressing. Every dish we've tried is excellent! We recently tried the paella, the whole fish and the fish fry. They were all excellent! They give small containers of their yummy cilantro sauce and another creamy, hot & spicy sauce. The yucca is very crispy. The chef really knows how to cook yucca perfectly. Usually when I visit a restaurant more than once I order a new dish but because I love this dish so much I had to order it again. I met up with some friends Friday evening around 6PM and the parking lot was full and there was a 30-45 minute wait on the food. I appreciated that there was a sign that there was a wait. I also appreciated that appetizers came out quickly due to the long food wait time. My friend ordered the Pescado Frito/Fried Whole Pompano fish as well but her fish was much smaller than mine and the owner confirmed that they are using a new fish vendor and the fish are smaller. With the fish being smaller I think the price should refelct that-just a suggestion. The food and the service is always food and I love the new addition of scanning a QR code to view menu photos. read more

I've been three times and only one dish wasn't great. We are vegetarians, so our selection is a bit limited. The special vegetarian empanadas were great. Both the tallerines verdes and tallerines saltado were fantastic. (Note: one time we ordered GF and the order took almost an hour...so be careful about that. The next time we ordered the regular pasta, and the food still took an hour to arrive. It was OK...we had to leave almost as soon as the food arrived due to another conflict but the appetizers were so filling we ate a few bites and took the rest...everyone was still quite happy). The vegetarian fried rice was fantastic as well. (The first time I came I had the regular empanadas, which were overly greasy and a bit bland; the only bad order we've had with three visits with multiple people each time) read more

We started with empanadas. Beef and chicken. I tried the Peruvian empanadas (baked) and my partner the Colombian empanadas (fried). Super delicious. The dough on the Peruvian empanadas was slightly sweat and flakey. And they were all loaded with yumminess. We split the Lomo Saltado entree and opted to add the fried egg and sweet plantains. OMG! This dish was simply amazing. The beef was super tender, the sauce was so flavorful, the plantains were sweet (but not too sweet) and cooked perfectly, the rice and veggies were also cooked perfectly. The portion was quite generous and unfortunately did not leave us room for dessert. We'll save room for our next visit which will hopefully be very soon! read more

This was my first time in Madison and my partner's family wanted me to pick a place. My go-to when I'm in any city is Peruvian food. I found this place on Yelp and it had good reviews. When we got there, I could already smell that familiar smell of good Peruvian food. We were immediately greeted by a wonderful woman telling us to pick any table. I loved that they had a huge thriving Monstera plant in between the bathrooms. I had two vegan empanadas THAT WERE SOOOO GOOD. Even the meat lovers at the table were surprised. I also got some chichi mirada to start. It was not too sweet and not too bitter, but just right. Then, the food came. The portions were HUGE, all of us loved the food, but all of us had leftovers. The Arroz Chaufa was delicious and tasted authentic along with the rest of the food. Our family that lives in Madison were already talking about how they're gonna come back and try different things. It was satisfying, my stomach was pleased. It was also satisfying to talk with our personable Peruvian waitress. You guys got to try this place out, the thing about good Peruvian food is... The whole menu will be good. We got seven different dishes and all reminded me of my grandma's cooking. Highly, highly, highly recommend to anyone wanting latin cuisine. The first thing you notice when you enter is the AMAZING dessert counter. Don't walk out without getting something. The seating is casual but extremely clean. We were warned ahead of time that the kitchen would be slow which we were okay with - like everyone else in the restaurant industry they could use a little more help. I ordered the roast chicken while my wife ordered the ceviche. She enjoyed a glass of sangria while she waited. The TV in back was showing french pro soccer highlights which we both enjoyed - who wouldn't want to see a bit more Messi footage after the spectacular world cup? All our food was extremely well made. My chicken was very flavorful and even the fries which I expected to be bland had something extra to them. My wife enjoyed her ceviche but said she'd try something else next time.
