We recently rented a house in Sparta NC thru Vrbo. Naturally, part of my planning for this trip, involved a deep dive into the locally owned restaurants because our traveling rule is NO CHAINS! So here's a side note about locally owned restaurants:: I used to think that if a restaurant didn't have a website, they weren't serious about it. I've since learned that I'm an idiot. Most of the places only had a FB page with pictures of the menu. I decided that maybe no website means they are so busy serving great food, they don't have time to create and manage a website. I'd rather have great food! I had read that Mis Arados is family owned and is one of the top rated Mexican restaurants in NC. We can vouch for that claim! On our way to the cabin we called in an order for pick up. We got 2 jumbo ground beef burritos, and added cheese sauce because if it's not swimming in cheese, is it even Mexican food? We reheated when the time came and we were blown away. They actually seasoned the ground beef and it made a huge difference! They included a bag of tortilla chips and really fresh salsa. I'm sorry there's no pictures of the burritos but trust me when I say we wolfed them down. Every. Single. Morsel. These were only $7.50 each + $2.99 for cheese dip. We picked up from them again and tried two of their specialty items. Hubs got the Sparta Special and I got the Jaliciense Especial. I wrote this down phonetically (holly-see-N-say) after I made Siri speak it. Hopefully Siri didn't make a fool of me because she can be a little b*#&@y. Anyway, we ate on these meals twice each because each dish felt like it weighed 5 lbs. I do have pictures of these. I'm telling you, I love Mexican food around the Triad but this food was next level. The SS had steak, chicken breast, topped with chorizo, onion and Chile toreado, served with soft tortillas, rice and beans. The JE had chicken, shrimp, onions, mushrooms and chorizo, served with soft tortillas, rice and beans. The Don Guillermo Special is delicious- a generous helping of grilled shrimp paired with grilled veggies and rice covered in a yummy garlic sauce. Not great.... A group of 12 of us came here for dinner the other night and I was disappointed. It took forever to even get drinks and even longer for our food - which I understand it being a weekend. But when my cheese dip came out it was ice cold. We sent it back and they popped it in the microwave instead of giving me a new one. The meat from the tacos were so greasy that three of my cousins didn't eat their food and didn't have to pay. Also, my cousin got a tamale and it came out frozen. They sent it back, put it in the microwave (and we knew bc the salsa was all dried up on the side when they brought it back) and told her "sorry we don't have anymore". The restaurant appeared clean with a beautiful Mexican decor. The restaurant had a lot of diners, which is usually a good sign. The service was excellent, and we didn't wait long at all to get our food. My plate was filled with grease, and I was unable to eat it. My husband let them know that I wasn't able to eat the food, and they were gracious enough not to make me pay. I was not trying to get a free meal and was disappointed that I couldn't eat it. On a Sunday afternoon it was packed so we had a brief wait to be seated. The host was friendly and up front that they were busy and short staffed but would get to us as quickly as possible. We got our chips as soon as we sat down and shortly later the waiter was able to get our orders. My friend had the fish tacos and I had chicken fajitas. Delicious on both counts!!! We live in jacksonville fl and came up here to visit family and this is the best Mexican food we have ever eaten! There was flavor in the food and so much of it. Better than most! The service was excellent - very attentive with offers to refill the FRESH AND DELICIOUS chips (unlike other reviews here). Great salsa - nice and spicy. Warning for vegetarians - they have a vegetarian menu, but I am pretty sure their beans are refried in pork fat or some other non-vegetarian fat (you might want to ask about this).
