From the initial walk through to the final touch ups, this company did an outstanding job. Let me give you a quick overview of how easy it was to work with these contractors. First, the initial sales person, Michael, was incredibly knowledgeable and able to see the vision we had for the first floor. He took a good number of photos and then met with other project managers at their office. From here, we met with an amazing designer, Halley. She answered every question I had and promised me she would guide me along the way. I had some ideas, and everything I forgot, she gently guided to a solution. I was able to pick everything from the exact sink and faucet, to backsplash and flooring. The amazing communication continued throughout the project using an app called buildertrend. We knew when the contractors were arriving for each step of the process. We were also able to ask questions through the app and received quick responses. I did have a couple of change orders, and even those were handled seamlessly. My project has been done now for about three months, and every day I love seeing the finished project.

My wife Jenny and I finished construction of our new home in April 2016. It is an ICF house…read moredesigned and built by David F. Maher of Appleton, WI. This is our dream home that is the culmination of years of ideas and lots of questions we each had about what we both ultimately wanted in a house. It's a very unique house that combines the advantages of ICF construction - strength, energy-efficiency, and sound insulation - with many style features of storybook or Tudor-style houses. We have received many compliments from our neighbors and passersby on the "castle-like" appearance of our home, plus we did win the "Wisconsin ICF Home of the Year" award from the Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association. This award means a lot to us since it is a validation of all the choices we made, and the time and energy put into the design and construction of our house. To anyone thinking about building their own house we offer two simple pieces of advice: Do your homework and pay attention to details as you will be making many choices. We did some research on ICF construction and decided early on that it was the way that we wanted to proceed. We also decided on hiring David F. Maher since he designed and built ICF homes in Wisconsin; he is both a licensed architect and builder in Wisconsin which offers considerable advantages. David is very professional, honest, and fair as he took our ideas and ultimately put them into reality. Both Jenny and I are in our 50's so we did have our particular opinions and tastes, plus we're very "hands on" and "detail-oriented" individuals. Admittedly, we had some heated conversations with David and between ourselves. However, heated conversations can produce excellent designs and ideas since everyone contributes and compromises. In the end we did get an award-winning house that would make Frank Sinatra proud since "we did it our way." We love our new home and will not sell since its design and construction are an integral part of our lives. Lastly, we would also strongly recommend that anyone interested in going through the house building process watch an old black and white movie titled "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. The film shows how building a house can be a rollercoaster ride, and it is something that everyone experiences. The only differences between the movie and current home construction are the construction techniques and current building costs. Expect a lot of ups and downs since we did have our fair share. In retrospect, there are a few things that we would have done differently but you cannot anticipate everything and in the end we do have a beautiful and wonderful home.

I was the main builder and general contractor. I worked alongside of David throughout the project and I found him to be an upstanding man, honest, competent, reliable and professional. He was very detailed about the costs and what was needed to do the project. It turned out excellent and I would hire David again. Since that time, I have flipped houses and I call David periodically with questions and calculations. He is very easy to work with and always clear about what I need to do. He is the best architect and builder I know. I would recommend him to anyone looking to build and ICF house.

Typically I don't write reviews. However, the process of our project was very poorly managed by ARC…read moredespite the reassurance that we would have a project manager. We never saw a project manager through the whole process. We had to manage through many issues and rework, from the wrong color siding being put on, to water coming in my kitchen from the roof not being wrapped correctly and nails sticking out of the roof. From the edging not being finished and siding that covered our cable to siding that was cut in corners for some reason to poor calking and beyond. We had to manage and call or email the issues at every step of the way because no one was here managing the project. The final straw was when they were here to finally fix the issues they were nailing siding into a wall and broke the tile in our bathroom. I asked for 1/2 of the $5K that I had paid to have my shower tiled since the tile was discontinued and it would be roughly $8K to have it redone today. I thought I was being fair, but this is what I got back: "Again, I apologize. It is not an excuse, but with the transition of some key employees things weren't managed correctly. I would be upset if I was in your position. I would have a hard time recommending ARC also. I did talk with management and we will discount $1,000 for the shower with the understanding there won't be a negative review left online. I don't expect a 5 star review online since you didn't' have a 5 star experience. Does that sound fair?" This is not a company that stands behind their work or their word. I would not recommend them as in a previous email I was told: "I am having a hard time to justify a $2,500 discount to my management for a few tiles that may have broken from siding installation." They MAY have broken? I'm lying? Thank you, but I loved my shower and now it looks horrible. But you can't buy a good review from me as that is not worth it to me. Shame on you ARC, I went with you despite you being more expensive than another company because of what you promised. Stand behind your word and your work. Very unhappy customer. Wanitta Charnon

We found him on Facebook (i know our first mistake) Chatted a bit and then he came over to see what he was working with. We were looking to get a 24x30 garage slab installed. We had laid a 24x24 at our previous house so we asked all the right questions. Where he was getting conrete from, if he was doing rebar etc. He told us he was starting his own business after 10 years in the industry (after what hes put us through something tells me those 10 years were spent pushing a wheel barrow and whining about "the man") he seemed like a nice guy, had all the right answers so we thought wed give him a shot to help his new business. WRONG CHOICE. We signed a contract stating he would lay the flatwork and cover cost on all materials. 1- He told us he was going to be using rebar. He only put it around the edges of the freaking slab. When asked where the rest of the rebar was he responded with "theres a fiber in the concrete that makes it so we dont have to use it" 2- We talked about a drain for our slab abd he knew we would be building in it. He said he would supply the drain but that we needes to provide whatever type of anchor bolts we wanted. Ok cool. He brought the drain we brought the anchors so they could be put in the wet cement. Which all happened fine and dandy until he had to cut half of the anchors off because they were gonna line up with any wall we could ever build. 3- None of his "guys" could cut a stake to save their lives. The kid was cutting stakes about 2 ft long which didnt hold any of their form boards causing the edges to bow out. The back edge bowed so bad he had to come back with a saw to "fix" it. 4- He left a god awful mess down our entire driveway. He allowed the concrete truck drivers to clean out their trucks on our driveway, we now have huge spots of uneven concrete everywhere. And he left big chunks of concrete (mess from his sloppy work) all around the slab which we now have to dispose of. 5- About a month after the slab was done we get a letter from the concrete company threatening to place a lein on our property for the cost of the concrete. We thought ok, maybe hes just busy and missed it. Tried to contact him via all avenues, crickets. Finally get him on the phone and ask him whats going on. He tells us he "has to go through his paperwork" and "would have someone look into it." To which we responded "ok fine but if your bill isnt paid we will seek legal action" to which he said "ok" and hung up. Got him on the phone one more time with the same answers and no change. 5- Called the concrete company who mentioned how much debt he has with the company and urges us to contact our district attorney as he was not responding to their certified letters or phone calls. Also asked about the added fiber in our concrete, and they informed us he never ordered the fiber, so big fat lie. So here we sit with a who knows how long itll last slab, a lein breathing down our necks and beginning the process with an attorney. A whole lot of junk that we shouldnt have to be dealing with. This fool thinks hes gonna start a great flatwork business without paying his bills and lying to his customers. All he cares about is doing the smallest amount possible to take your money and run.
