They helped me load stuff when I couldn't do it by myself. They usually have really great prices and a variety of styles and products. It's always different and that's half the fun! Really fun store, amazing deals. The hours are a little weird (They close at 4p on Friday). Furniture for all rooms, including other items like rugs and dishes. Very accessible pricing, for example, most chairs and stools were under or around $50. read more

This used to be such a great store! Excellent items at a great bargain. Whoever took over the store has hiked up the prices incredibly!! There are things that are listed far past the second hand store price point. It may be for a good cause but I doubt the number of transactions these days compared to the days of old, and is not because of the pandemic. Someone has become greedy. It really bums me out to see the poor reviews below, because the times I've been there have been really pleasant experiences. The staff has always been friendly and helpful, and I'm always impressed with the selection of merchandise. My best purchase to date was a gorgeous Ethan Allen armoire that would have sold for upwards of 3k new-- I got it for just over $300. To be fair, I'm not an antique collector by any means, so I can't really speak to their selection/pricing on that front. But for a young professional starting a family who can't afford to shop at West Elm but doesn't want to own only furniture from Ikea? It's perfect. read more

I don't even know why I shop local anymore, or really any place that has a strict no refund policy. I recently purchased a futon from the Miriam Switching post (Tuesday 1/23/18) hoping that it would be a good addition to my apartment. I paid for the item and the futon was put on hold in the back area of the store until I could arrange for delivery to my home. When I got home and did measurements in my apartment, I realized that the futon would not fit in the space I had envisioned it in. I promptly called Miriam to ask for a refund and or a partial return. The manager at the Switching post explained to me that a refund would not be possible. I explained that the futon was still there and that perhaps she could make an exception, I had not taken the item home and would be willing to take a partial refund. This would have been a great solution. They would have been able to resell the futon, I would have donated part of the money to a worthwhile cause and both parties would have been happy. However, The manager explained that this was not possible but I could "re-donate" it to the Switching Post. When I asked her who her manager was she said she didn't have one so I said that she must have some control over the flexibility of their return policy but she stated she didn't. I told her to expect a bad review and that I would not be recommending this store anymore to the people I knew. The manager said that really didn't matter. I guess this company doesn't care about its online reputation I have shopped at the Miriam Switching post for many years and have gotten some wonderful dressers, a couch and artwork from the store. I like supporting the Miriam School but I told her that she would lose me as a customer and I would no longer recommend this store. It is too bad that local businesses can't get on board with updated return policies- they will just lose a lot of customers. I recently wrote a letter to the board of directors of the Miriam school explaining this situation, I hope they listen. Update1/25/18: They called me back and made it right. Still will not return. My friends and I love Miriam Switching Post. There are often fantastic furniture finds that are reasonably priced - like $3,000+ designer couches in perfect condition for $700; the Pottery Barn armchair I got for $65 - and there are little bitty funky kitchen items for $1 or $2 - AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. From perfect condition designer items to way out-of-style grandma furniture to fixer-uppers and DIY dreams - you can find it all. And the array changes daily. Don't like what's there now and think there's nothing - wait a few days and go back. In my move, I needed more furniture pieces - I've been able to buy wrought iron outdoor furniture at a fraction of new. Sets of crystal, high end china bits and pieces, lamps, wall clocks, art at seriously affordable prices (some original); vintage jewelry - an urban bazaar. And there are sporadic daily and weekly specials - as I write this, glassware and china under $20 is all half-price. In addition to that, after 30 days, there is a 10% price reduction, and another after the next 30 days for all items over $15 with a date on them. In response to negative reviews - I'll say this: I agree that the prices are higher than they were at the previous location - but hey, prices are higher everywhere. Not only that, but demand for pre-owned, recycled items is greater - and price is demand-sensitive. People who never would have considered used furniture before have awakened to this market - after all, once I used it, it's used even if I bought it new. There is a new, talented, and delightful woman who has recently become the new manager, Rachel. And the vast majority of volunteers are pleasant and knowledgeable people - and they do have their own personalities. And while there are some errors in pricing judgement, doesn't that always seem true in vintage and antique shops? I think there are abundantly more good deals here than overpriced items. And sometimes Rachel and staff realize that things are priced too high, and change the prices. read more

After my last review of Miriam, I waited a few months and decided to go back in and give them another chance. I walked around and as usual, broken items, over priced items, and items that had been sitting there for months (the date the item goes on the floor for sale is on their tags). I spotted one item but hesitated on the "sale price". After leaving I thought about it and decided to pay their price and called them. I made the purchase over the phone. When I went in to pick up the item, the "volunteer" behind the counter had it ready for me. She handed it to me and stated, "You need to change your review of us to shop here". I was baffled. I turned to walk through the store and she followed me with her phone in a loud voice explaining I wrote a horrible review. I stood there and explained my position on their pricing. Had the item I purchased today not been on sale, I wouldn't have purchased anything. The item was over priced, as most things are there. She put her phone almost to my nose stating I don't have to shop there if I don't like the pricing. I was so taken back. I couldn't believe a grown woman in her 60's was acting this way and that the rest of the staff, including the manager (the only person there that receives a salary and is not a volunteer) was standing by and watching/allowing this woman to act in such an atrocious way to a customer. I suppose this is what happens when you are full of volunteers. You can not really manage them, if they do something wrong you can not fire them. Let me be clear---The items in this shop are Donated to them. They then Over price the items-the items sit on their floor/shelving for 3-4 months then they start to reduce the items. Another 2-3 months later, the items are at a decent. The staff is rude, Unknowledgeable, and use the excuse "it's for a charity" to support their extreme over pricing. As a Yelper, and a Yelp Elite for the last two years, I usually pride myself when I am in an establishment. I never thought that being a Yelper and writing an honest review of a business would have gotten me such horrible treatment. Yelpers beware-if the staff at Miriam do not like what you have to say, they will treat you horribly and demand you change your review. read more

I agree with the antique dealer in the first review. I've been going there on a regular basis since they moved to the new location. The prices have gone steadily up, and the quality of the merchandise has gone down. For example, lids are missing and items are chipped. It wasn't always like this. I went to Miriam Switching Post for the first time on 10/14/2017. I found the staff to be cheerful and helpful. They answered all of our questions and were very accommodating with our purchase. We could not fit our item in our vehicle, so we left it there and picked it up the next day. We bought a leather executive chair for $40. It was just what we were looking for. They have some unique and beautiful items. I found their prices to be reasonable. I love that the proceeds go to helping children with learning disabilities. read more
