In short: bad information and customer service…read more The whole story: I was referred to Dr. Clarke by my primary care provider for evaluation and treatment of tinnitus. I did some research about tinnitus causes and treatments prior to my appointment. During my appointment, Dr. Clarke's audiologist conducted a hearing test which revealed significant hearing loss. Dr. Clarke spent a reasonable amount of time speaking with me and answering questions. He informed me that my tinnitus and my hearing loss were certainly unrelated, that there were no effective treatments for tinnitus and that I would have to learn how to live with it. He stated that my hearing loss was significant enough to require hearing amplification but stated that I would need to wait 6 months to see if my hearing worsened first. I pressed him for more information because this information did not seem right to me. He finally admitted that there are tinnitus treatment centers at Duke and in Greensboro. He gave me a brochure for the program in Greensboro. I contacted the tinnitus program in Greensboro and learned that they were not covered by my insurance. I then learned that Duke was in-network for me. The difference in cost between the programs was several thousand dollars. Duke would not schedule an appointment without a referral from my doctor. So, I phoned Dr. Clarke to request a referral to the Duke clinic based on the need to save money. Over the course of 30 minutes, he repeatedly refused to make the referral to Duke. He would provide no reason for this refusal. Finally, he agreed to prepare referral paperwork but only if I would come pick it up in person. Oddly enough, this entire exchange occured via Dr. Clarke's assistant, who was relaying our conversation via instant message. When I was seen by the audiologist at Duke, she informed me that my instincts were correct. That there was a direct relationship between my hearing loss and tinnitus. She advised immediately fitting for hearing devices. She said there was absolutely no reason to suffer for 6 more months without treatment. I was disappointed that the information Dr. Clarke provided my about my condition was not consistent with current standards in the field. I was also angered by his refusal to provide me with a referral for the care I needed at a reasonable cost.

All of the people I've dealth with at UNC Hearing and Communication -- the audiologists, staff, and trainees -- have been top notch. I strongly recommend them. They also work with all of the prescription hearing aid manufacturers, so you're not limited to devices from one or two "house" brands as with some vendors. Choosing and programming hearing aids so that they are right for you takes time, skill, and patience. UNC delivers on all fronts.

Ryan took the call and in spite of having very bad hearing, I had no trouble understanding his clear diction. He has a warm manner and is patient too. No one likes to admit they need hearing aids, and I think Ryan understands this. He treated me with dignity and did not condescend, as some of the Big University doctors unfortunately have done. He asked plenty of important questions, including whether I had tinnitus. Tinnitus is a big part of my problem and even so, I nearly forgot to mention it! Thank goodness Ryan knew and asked.
