7.8/10 Another tiki lounge for the books! We sat outside,…read morewhich was really nice since the weather out here in Ventura is so good. The inside is pretty cool too: very eclectic and unique, with a lot of stuff hanging from the walls and Polynesian influence all around. Even the light fixtures are really unique and pretty. The one letdown was the bathroom: just plain white walls. So disappointing! Most tiki lounges I've been to go all out in the bathroom, so I was a little let down. Hopefully they change that someday. I got my original, the Zombie, my normal go-to tiki drink. It's pretty strong, an 8.9/10 for strength, and a little more bitter than other Zombies I've had. It comes in a super cute glass that looks almost like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and honestly, I really wanted one just for the glass. It also comes with a whole interactive experience: the staff yelled "Oh my god, there's a zombie! Kill the zombie! Stab the zombie!" and I had to stab the flaming lime sitting on top of my drink. Everyone was screaming, and it was really fun. They did it every time somebody ordered one, and I thought it was hilarious. The menu is really eclectic with a lot going on: full meals, ahi tuna, salads, bowls, sushi rolls, appetizers, and sliders. We ordered the Spam musubi, my favorite. I don't know what seasoning they use, but the Spam was super tasty. I do wish the slice was bigger to even out the rice-to-Spam ratio, since there was a lot of rice. 8.9/10. We also got the salad with ahi tuna, which was really good. The ahi was a little more well done than I would've wanted, but still very tasty. They were out of the miso ginger dressing, but the vinaigrette was actually my first choice anyway, and it was really good. I just wish they'd put a little more on, since it would've added a lot of extra flavor. The size was a little disappointing, though. Service was really good. Luckily, we were seated pretty fast, and our server was really friendly and nice, checked up on us, and was a super cool guy. My only thing is the pricing on something like the salad. It was a very simple salad, just greens, tomatoes, onions, and mango, and $18 seemed like a lot for that. With the added ahi it came to about $30, which felt a little steep. Overall, 7.8/10. It wasn't a bad tiki lounge, but it also wasn't my favorite out of all the ones I've been to. Still a fun spot with a great vibe, a strong drink, and an interactive experience to go with it, and I'd like to go back and try more of the menu.

Color me shocked that I had been to Ventiki numerous times and I have yet to submit a review!…read more Typically we hit up Ventiki when we watch a show at the Majestic Theater since it's within walking distance. We love the decor and the menu has refined to some tasty top hits. One of my favorite shareable is the Spam Musubi along with the potstickers. I haven't had a bad drink yet at Ventiki but my go-to is Cobra's Fang. I'm not a light weight but the drinks here tend to be on the stronger side. Usually two cocktails get's me just lubed up enough to enjoy a show at the Majestic. Strongly recommend Ventiki to any tiki heads out there. Good food and great drinks!

Good drinks and good food. Plenty of seating outside. It was a good fit for our group. Was quite a surprise when last night we arrived to find a private event happening. I realize that the Tavern hosts private events, I saw that on the website. Neither Katie nor I discussed the possibility of a conflict when I spoke with her, so part of this is on me, but as the event coordinator, most of it was on her. Doesn't she have a main calendar for events? Because if she does, we weren't on it. The security fetched Katie, and she matter-of-factly stated that they were hosting a private event, so the venue was not available. She never apologized, seemed to not care that we had 30-40 people showing up at a place that was now unavailable to us. She stated, again matter-of-factly with no apology, that it was wedding season and events were her priority. So, the Tavern? Probably a great place for events, and a fun bar with good food, but their event coordinator definitely needs better communication and better organization. We will no longer be meeting there, needless to say.

I had no idea what I wanted to eat, and he took the time to give me several suggestions before helping me narrow it down to the wings and the garlic noodle bowl with steak and shrimp. The crispy wings were PERFECT, and the garlic noodle bowl was absolutely delicious. The steak and shrimp were such a good combination. What really stood out, though, was the hospitality. Dre made me feel genuinely welcomed and taken care of from the moment I walked in. Great food and even better service. I'll definitely be back!

I also have to give a huge shoutout to Dre, who was an amazing host! I loved how he took the time to explain the whole concept behind the restaurant and share the family background. You can really feel the love and passion behind this place, and that made the experience even more special. I absolutely love supporting local, family-owned businesses, and this one is officially my new favorite! The vibe is so cute, CLEAN and homey--perfect for a girls' night, date night, or just a night out with good food and good company. Definitely can't wait to come back!

One of the bartenders even ended up being my roommate for a time (and we would dance together in the living room). It was a hard time in my life when I first went there and I've grown and become, hopefully, a much better person just from experiencing the wonderful friends I've met. I could tell so many stories, but my point is simply this: This is THE BEST bar I have ever been to in my entire life and I cannot say enough good things about it and the people who run it, the regulars, bartenders, etc. Just genuinely awesome people. Even just the other day, a couple came in and they hadn't been there before, and we were just talking and they said "This is such a nice place." It's like Cheers. I walk in the door and end up hugging like everyone before I even get my name on the pool table (they also have a really nice pool table. I've been playing for years now as a result.) The owners Big J and Dave are awesome... I'm kind of overflowing with compliments here but it's just... it's the best place. If I had to choose what I was going to do with my night, my day, whatever, just getting out, it would be The Garage. Absolutely awesome. (I'm honestly just disappointed with myself that I didn't give them a Yelp review sooner. I cannot recommend this place enough. 5 stars just doesn't cut it).

Fun times and great bands on the weekends! Great neighborhood bar with pool tables and darts!read more

"I am convinced that dive bars will be the salvation of the West."-intrepidmind17 (TikTok)…read more I'm new in Ventura. Wandered in here accidentally about a month ago and ended up doing karaoke on a Monday night, which is a regular thing, apparently. Dennis, the karaoke guy, is a sound engineer and his gear and system are peak. Drinks are good and not expensive. Vibe is cool, if you are. The patio area is awesome and a great place to meet rando strangers and engage in conversation, if that's your thing. It's mine. I had a great conversation with some guy today for over an hour. It turns out that he is the owner. Who knew? Obviously everyone BUT me, but I digress. Nice guy and the story of how his family bought this bar many years ago was cool. It's been here since the 40's. Every other Wednesday is rock/metal night aka "wicked Wednesday". It's loud and rowdy and awesome as long as you're not a douchebag. Alternate Wednesdays have a DJ spinning jams etc or whatever the younglings refer to it these days. God, I'm old...but I'm not fat. Everyone calls this place "the sewer" and "everyone ends up at the sewer at the end of the night" is one of the prevailing axioms of this place. "The sewer is my church" is another and you can buy a t-shirt with this emblazoned on the front. Cool. Basically a chill place to hangout and meet people...just like a good bar SHOULD be. Keep up the good work. Shout-out to Hannah and Moriah, two of the bartenders.

The Topa Topa on Thompson is my personal favorite location. All of them are great, and each one…read morecarries that welcoming, familiar energy, but the downtown spot just feels different. No matter which Topa you walk into, you see familiar faces. There is a real sense of family there, and I would hate to lose that. The Thompson location specifically feels like home. When I lost someone very near and dear to me, Topa became a place where I could breathe again. On the worst days, walking through those doors made things feel just a little lighter. Sometimes it felt like I was holding my breath all day until I got there. There is a steady comfort in that space. Mama mia, that kind of place is rare. I have definitely "invested" ;) my fair share into the pool table and the pinball machine. Trivia nights with the awesome host, the food pop ups, Nicks Smash Burgers and Ramos Tacos are the best. Being introduced to new bands and almost always leaving a live show with a vinyl or CD by the end of their set. It truly is a community. Supporting local artists and seeing the same people show up for each other over and over again is part of what makes it special. And the beer is unreal. I was never much of a beer person, but a few years ago they pulled me in with Moo Bae then the Althlone Ranger, and then the 4 and 20. My current favorite is The Tux. Every time I go in, that is what I get. I loved when they had more dark beers too. Topa Topa opened the door for me into the craft beer world without ever feeling intimidating. Once you find a place where you feel appreciated and respected, where you feel known, you do not want to lose that. A huge part of that for me is seeing my regular beer tenders, Mike, Lea, Marie, and Zion. They are part of what makes walking through those doors feel like coming home. The Thompson location is that kind of place. Really messed up what you did. EDIT- This is nothing against the newer employees of Topa, but has everything to do with corporate. What were you thinking getting rid of 15% of your staff? The people that have helped build the foundation of your brand. The people that build the individual personalities of each taproom. The people that we have gotten to know and they've gotten to know us. Like I said before Topa is a family. I get that the craft beer scene is getting smaller but getting rid of family is so dumb. Your regulars have developed a relationship with these people. It's so disheartening to go now. When we go we aren't greeted by these friendly faces that know us. You'd think you'd focus more on your regulars you know the people that actually spend money here rather than the "next generation". Like I said, this has nothing to do with the new workers. They're nice. But the people we've developed relationships could NEVER be replaced. The lovers of topa topa do not like this. And I've already seen on Reddit people are saying they aren't going back.
