North of the Border - We had been hearing woodpeckers, and we think this was one of their projects.

We have friends with access to Monomonac Lake, a 594-acre dam-created lake in Rindge NH and…read moreWinchendon MA. We walked the woods, attentively, i'll say, because over the last year we've seen critters including a bobcat, occasional black bears and deer, and the year before a porcupine. On this visit we saw woodpeckers and turkeys. (Jul2026) We're fond of time on the lake. We launched from our friends' shore and just motored around. We picnicked on the boat and on our friends' shore. The only public access we know of is the $25 ramp behind the well-stocked North of the Border convenience store on US-202, on the NH/MA border at the west tip of the lake. On the lake in the summer, there's lots of pontoons and boats, jet skis, and kayaks and canoes, for boating, skiing, and fishing. As far as I know, there are no public beaches or shores. The lakefront is all private property.

I've been going here for years and they've always known exactly what I buy which is impressive. The store is always clean and neat. It's also set up with a lake directly behind it, making it a nice place to hang out and eat as there is a table and chairs set up behind the store, overlooking the water.

My wife and I enjoyed a day road trip from central MA through some back country of west central MA…read moreand ended up in Winchester NH. We have seen the television ads for Cha's and stopped for a much needed break after nearly 5 hours behind the wheel. What surprised me when I walked in was the size of the place. On the north side of the store are all the alcohol coolers, the south hade grocery items, their food service counter and dining area, and restrooms. The cashier counter is nearly in the middle. Had I just ran for a tasty beverage, the rating be higher, but... I used the restroom. Two things right off the bat, there are only two unisex bathrooms. One was occupied so used the unoccupied one closest the south entrance. I don't know when it was last checked or cleaned by the staff, but it was filthy. There is a toilet and nearby a low urinal. There was piss all over the floor by the urinal and it ran on the floor to the front of the toilet. There was toilet paper all over the floor like someone had cleaned up the floor in order to use the toilet. Next while I do appreciate the use of hands free sinks and soap dispenser, you have to keep the soap dispenser loaded with soap. Also the only way to try the hands was blower, paper towels not an option. Second issue with the visit- the food. Their advertising touts their pressure fried chicken. The hot chicken sitting in the food service area looked dehydrated and totally unappealing. I grabbed one of their chicken salad with cranberry wraps and a bottle of the new Sprite+Tea. The we were on our way back to MA. Within 30 minutes of eating that wrap, it came back up and not in a good way. By the time we got home an hour later, I was in some serious discomfort. While they have great TV marketing, the store falls short on delivering as far food quality and bathroom cleanliness. Too bad.

My cousin and I stopped to pick up lunch at this little Country Store in Sullivan, New Hampshire…read more The store recently reopened with new owners after falling into disrepair. The new owners have cleaned and reorganized the store while maintaining the original country charm. There is patio seating outside (no room for seating inside). The store carries a nice variety of local produce, meat, cheese, syrup and other goods along with necessitates. Prices are on the high side, as you may expect from a specialty store in a resort area. The new owners are super friendly and helpful. First, we selected two of their house made apple cider donuts with sugar. The donuts were divine, soft cake with lots of cinnamon, sugar and apple flavor. I would stop by every day for those donuts if I lived here. We ordered the soup of the day, homemade French Onion The soup was hot with lots of melted cheese and tasty croutons. The soup was a tad too sweet, but good otherwise. My cousin ordered the egg salads sandwich, which is enormous and delicious. The sandwich is served on a long piece of French bread ladened with egg salad. Highly recommend the egg salad. I had the Chopped Italian Grinder, which also came out on a long piece of French Bread. There was a lot of bread for the amount of meat/cheese on the sandwich. The grinder was ok. There is a small but adequate parking lot. Overall, we loved the donuts and egg salad. I'd definitely return to try other things on the menu.
