Bark Avenue A Premier Grooming Salon - Traveling with Taz

Bark Avenue A Premier Grooming Salon

I just moved to Florence last year from Charleston so maybe I need to lower my expectations…read more I've tried 3 grooming salons since I moved here and so far they are all sub-par in my opinion. I thought Bark Avenue was going to be different, because the first groom we had was wonderful, but so far they are inconsistent. The times I get a full groom done on my labradoodles they're usually done very well. Then I get a maintenance groom and it's like they get a bath but no more; even though I specifically ask for feet, face, ears and hygiene areas done. Today I returned from picking them up and my one dog's ears are full of mats. She has long hair on her ears, and the mats are very visible on the ends. I called and the groomer said she "didn't see any mats..." Well, she's very young and I'm pretty old, and not wearing my glasses and I can see them. The attitude of the younger lady there seems to be indifference . She never smiles, or greets the dogs. She just seems like she hates working there tbh. I'm sure that is not what the owner of Bark Avenue wants in an employee. I hate leaving bad reviews but I guess I'm still on the search for a decent groomer in Florence.

Wanted to love this place SO BADLY, but I think they specialize in small dogs or poodle type dogs…read more(and short haired dogs). I will give 2 stars for how organized they are (when we arrived, the names of all the dogs and who is grooming them is on a white board and check-in is very easy). They were also very communicative prior to the appointment. Staff were all very nice. When I picked my dogs up after 3:5 hours and both were still a little bit damp. I noticed one dog had wet ears and a few knots behind her ears so I combed those out when we got home. Because she was damp upon pickup, she dried with her fur going all over. She is soft and fluffy though. My other dog, however, when I got home I noticed in the sun one area of his skin was super pink. I moved his fur back and noticed a whole patch of skin was raw. I'm not sure if they brushed too hard or with the wrong type of comb, but his skin was almost bleeding (the skin is a little broken in a few areas). The rest of his body seems fine but this one patch is raw which has never happened before. We just moved here so finding a new groomer and vet has been my biggest stressor. I know large dogs can be REALLY hard, but we had an amazing groomer back home so I know it can be done. They seemed to be doing great with the small shih-tzus and poodles and such, so I think if you have that type of dog, you would be okay.

We typically go out of our way to support smaller businesses rather than just defaulting to chains…read moreas we understand how challenging it is for a small or family run business, especially in today's climate, but in no circumstance should one be expected to overlook poor customer service just beacuse a place is a small business, or because we are all dealing with Covid, as a smile, good communication skills, listening to understand and apologizing for one's mistakes has nothing to do with being a big or small business, so it is unfortunate that our experience with Pampered Paws contained none of the above mentioned things that should be a given if a business expects to not only survive, but actually thrive in today's environment. After picking up our four legged family member we communicated that we were not pleased with the cut and the multiple requested services that were either forgotten and/or not completed fully and boy did things go downhill from there. It is a sign of poor customer service and lack of compassion and empathy in my opinion when you bring an issue about the service to someone's attention and are met with excuses and invalidating statements such as "All my customers love me", "I have never had a complaint", "You can ask anyone and they all have great things to say about me", "I am the most (fill in the blank) person you will ever meet", "I feel like you are the type of person who just complains about everything" and "I have been doing this for 20 years, so I know what I am doing", as these statements reek of defensiveness and rationalization, rather than simply acknowledging the issues, apologizing and vowing to do better moving forward. The former results in a negative experience and a lost customer, while the latter results in a second chance. Unfortunately this place lacks not only basic customer service skills, but comes off with a condescending and dismissive attitude that I would not want myself nor my pet to be around, because if that is how someone comes off in my presence, I don't want to imagine how that might act when I am not around, especially when their job is supposed to involve compassion, understanding and patience. Yes, we should support small businesses, and yes times are tough due to Covid, but no that does not mean we should settle for "less than" as basic manners don't get a pass just because of the times, as they should be a value that we carry with us at all times, because adversity doesn't just test character, it reveals it.

Love this place. Very family oriented and you can tell they love the animals. That goes a long…read moreway.
