McConvey Cycles - Bike fitting

McConvey Cycles

(3 reviews)

The famous McConvey cycles has been around for a long time and features everything an amateur or…read moreserious cyclist should need. Placing myself firmly in the 'amateur' bracket when it came to get a new bike I found the staff unintimidating and always helpful and sincere when answering my less than informed questions. The shop runs over 2 storeys and has everything from kid's bikes through to serious roadsters. They also do the 'cycle to work' scheme here which was one of the reasons I was down to check the selection. The assistant actually managed to talk me out of a more expensive model when he realised I wasn't going to be doing any serious miles on the bike and reminded me about a few necessary accessories (like a helmet, lock and lights!). After receiving the bike and a few admiring looks/comments from friends and colleagues I was only too happy to recommend McConveys to them. Pros: Good selection of bikes and accessories. Very knowledgeable staff. Cons: Location not idea. No parking.

Would not recommend this shop to anyone just starting or just returning to cycling. They are only…read moreinterested in money and will fleece you for as much as possible. The advice they give is often false, misleading and again geared to separate you from as much of your cash as they can. If you want to buy a bike, get one on the internet and get a good technician to set it up for you because this will save you money and you'll get better looked after and get better advise somewhere else. I feel as though I've been violated by these gangsters. One of the worst shops I've ever had the misfortune to step into. Never ever again. Fraudsters.

Mountain Trail - Old school BMX

From the moment you enter you feel like you have been transported back in time. Not because the products are dates, because they certainly aren't, but because of the old fashioned customer service on offer from the shopkeeper. A bell rings when you swing the door open and up jumps the friendly proprietor to greet you and ask can he help. From the moment I entered I felt at home and ended up chatting for half an hour. The shop itself sells a whole range of outdoor activity accessories and bikes. They have everything from racing bikes, mountain bikes to an old school BMX that I had my eye on. I was in the shop to look at the outdoor coats and I was expertly guided through the range. If you are an outdoor enthusiast I would highly recommend paying mountain trail a visit.

I have used the shop twice - the first time to buy a warm water proof fleece for the long Saturday afternoon rugby matches at Ravenhill - I got a regatta in pink for under £40 - a bargain I felt. The second time I used this shop was to buy little heat pads that you hold in your hand, break the metal disc and they heat up - you can put them in your socks to keep your feet warm or in your pockets for your hands - again I managed to get these cheaper than in other outdoor stores. Both experiences have been fine - I have got what I needed and been helped by a nice man who was full of information and advice. I also love the noticeboard outside that tells of local events and charity ventures one can take part in to do with the great outdoors - a great place to check if you fancy an adventure!

The park itself is located on the Upper Malone Road and is well sign posted from the city's main highways. There's great parking and our four legged friends are more than welcome in the park. You could see the whole park in about 30 minutes but likewise you could spend all day navigating the different gardens. Gardening enthusiasts will find the perfectly pruned flower gardens particularly interesting. There's a coffee house at the far side of the garden but unfortunately we didn't make it that far. It really is s lovely spot for an afternoon walk. Who needs to pay in to a National Trust park when you've got Lady Dixon on your doorstep!

The park itself is very well kept with cut grass and perfectly maintained rose gardens. There is lots of different sections to this park and many picnic tables so you will have no problem finding the perfect spot for your picnic. If you have come unprepared there is a coffee shop on the grounds somewhere (I'm not sure where though) so you should be able to grab a coffee for your walk. Great park especially on the rare occasion when the sun is shinning!

There are numerous trails to follow whether your walking, running or just aimlessly wandering. The air is filled with birdsong and sounds of running water from the Lagan River; I never listen to music or podcasts when walking through Belvoir as the sounds of nature are so relaxing. This is fast becoming one of my favourite locations in Belfast.

So, anyhoo, it's got an odd name, what else can I tell you about Belvoir? Well, it's a beautiful green space close to the centre of Belfast and in my experience, one that not that many people know about. Obviously, there is plenty of space taken over by lush green trees and shrubs which is ideal for kids and dogs. I think dogs are meant to be kept on leads but not everyone sticks to that and as long as the dogs behave, no-one gets too bent out of shape. There's also a river running through the forest park which dogs can splash about in although I don't let the kids go in it as I have a little bit of a rat phobia. Squirrels are everywhere, so take some nuts and they will come quite close to you to eat them. Cultured types will also be interested in the historical aspects of the forest like the 12th century motte. More simple types like me will just enjoy the fresh air, the greenery and the squirrels.
