If your kids are anything like mine, there aren't that many places you can go for more than half an hour without the brattish distress call of 'I'm BORED'. I love them dearly really. But Stormont Park is one of those places and then some. It's a massive children's play park with the added advantage of being slap bang in the middle of Stormont grounds which you can also explore. This is a well equipped and well maintained park. The super efficient park wardens see to that. 'Jobsworth' is a very cruel term, they just take their responsibilities seriously. There is something to amuse and tire out every age of child from toddlers right up to teens. Slides, monkey bars, tyre swings, zip line, large and small climbing frames and more. There are also picnic tables and portable BBQ stands so that you can 'make a day of it' as they say in Norn Iron. There are toilets too, not always clean at the busy times in summer, but any port in a storm. Just take your tissues and hand sanitiser and you'll be good. Even if you have to travel a few miles, Stormont Park is well worth a visit.

How time flies, yet so much remains the same... This was the park of parks. I mean, you really couldn't get much better than Stormont play park. It always reminded me of the really cool park up in Portrush that cost a couple of pounds to get into, except Stormont is free (parents can breathe a sigh of relief at this point...), and superior. The setting is a beautiful one - the park is nestled in amongst the trees at the edge of the estate, yet at the same time it's safely separate from the forest...so no missing little ones! As the two previous reviewers commented, there are a huge variety of different activities to keep the kids entertained for hours, plus a number of benches dotted around the place for mum and dad to chill. My favourite aspect of Stormont play park is the ever popular zip-line, which had a never-ending queue and was always surrounded by those cheeky wee louts who kept stealing everyone else's turn. Once you got on, you didn't want to get off, but unfortunately that had to be the way of it. Climbing ropes, swings, slides, frames and the rest are all there. And they're all so well maintained, which is lovely to see. If I was ten years younger, I'd be back in an instant...

It takes roughly 30 - 40 mins to ascend depending on fitness level. The path leads from a quaint bridge along a stony lane running behind Lagan college. It has quite a steep incline half way through - really gets the heart pumping. The vista over Belfast and the lough are breath taking. I usually catch a plane or ship coming in. Tip 1. Parking can be tight, i recommend parking in local estate Garland Hill and adding to the dander Tip 2. If you don't fancy the strenuous walk up hill there is another entrance with parking on the Lisnabreeny road itself.

There's a small car park off Manse Rd easy to miss as it's not signposted. Entry to the walk is through a wooden gate on the left. You are on a par with Cavehill height- wise and when it's clear you can see right down to the port of Belfast or over to the spectacular Mournes. There's a Rath surrounded by trees which is eerily quiet and the gravelled path leads you down towards Cregagh Glen and waterfalls. You walk past the back of Lagan college and enter the Glen via an underpass. Be careful as the old railway sleeper path ways can be treacherous as I found out to my cost recently! They look dry but can be slippery as I ended upon my ass. Fortunately nothing damaged except ny dignity! You can take a detour to visit the monument to American soldiers who served in NI during WW2 or walk on down the Glen which is beautiful especially after rain when the water is really flowing. It is quite a steep walk back up to the car park but there are a few benches dotted around. Hard to believe you are right in the heart of urban Belfast. This place is well worth a visit with kids (there's a little adventure playground) or its a haven for dog walkers or even just on your own.

There are two entrances to Legg Park, one along the main Belfast Road, just up from the Model Primary School, and another entrance facing the Windrose. The park is fully fenced off and really well equipped with soft flooring, swings, slides and climbing frames. The park is also really nicely landscaped with lots of benches making it pleasant to sit around on a sunny day.

Although not impossible I as found out the hard way. - the ground is completely covered in those safe wood bark chipping thingies. No, I'm not that outdoorsy. - it has a wide range of stuff to jump on, swing off, climb up, slide down and bounce on which saves my furniture from all of the above. There is plenty to keep my 4 and 9 year olds amused and some benches for me to park myself on. No public toilets though but I have boys and there are plenty of trees. But be warned. Another tick in the 'convenient' box is the large car park right beside the park. The only negative? The sheer amount of dog poop on the short walk between the park and the car. Dog owners of Belmont be ashamed.

It has been voted the best small park for the past couple of years. I used to take my dog here at least once per week and he knew the way around. There are lots of other dog walkers and areas to play fetch. I have seen people jogging around and the occasional cyclist possibly cutting through from Parkway to the Old Holywood road. Starting from the car park on Massey ave/ Upper Belmont road you can follow the path accross the carriageway bridge follow this around to the right will bring you to the kids play area. The play area is enclosed and dogs are not permitted. It has baby swings, a flying saucer swing, slides, rockers and cool climbing frames. The paths are always clear and the grounds are well kept. Summer events take place in Belmont park occasionally.

Well worth a visit…read more On 19 May 1928, the Governor of Northern Ireland the Duke of Abercorn laid the Foundation Stone for Parliament Buildings ( Front Pillars), The building was offically opened for business with a grand opening, On 16 November 1932, The Prince of Wales, Edward Windsor, opened Parliament Buildings. Architect Sir Arnold Thornely of Liverpool designed Parliament Buildings to be 365ft wide, representing one foot for every day of the year. Representing the number of counties in Northern Ireland, Parliament Buildings has six floors and there are six pillars at the entrance to the building. To camouflage Parliament Buildings during World War II, the building's Portland stone was painted with a mixture of cow manure and bitumen. Removing the paint after the war was a huge challenge with the mixture having stained the stonework. The paint mixture took seven years to remove and the exterior façade never regained its original white colour. It is one mile from the gates at the bottom of Prince of Wales Avenue to the front steps of Parliament Buildings. The avenue leading up to Parliament Buildings is lined with 305 red-twigged lime trees which have survived since they were first planted in the 1920s. Parliament Buildings is a Grade-B listed building, designed in Greek Classical tradition.

You know you're getting old when you're scouring Belfast looking for new dog walking destinations!…read more After suggesting Stormont Park would be a nice walk with the dog for the last few weeks we finally paid it a visit. It was a mild Saturday afternoon and there wasn't a cloud in the sky and to be fair the weather plays a big part in how you view this park. In the rain the trails would be muddy and the view over Belfast would be unclear but yesterday it was just perfect. The main features of the estate are; - Carson's mile - even if you don't like what goes on in parliament building you can't deny it's a pretty spectacular building and view from the gates. - the country trails through wooded land - the random excersise points - these are installed for joggers to break up their cardio with pull ups, press ups and various other activities. - the grounds are really well kept, cut grass, maintained flower beds and bins every 100 yards! There were also loads of other dogs and kids playing in the grounds and park making it a really nice atmosphere. All in all a really nice walk, could maybe do with a designated car park but apart from that it's top notch!

We walked through the Botanical Gardens which are located adjacent to the university. As like…read moreeverything else in Ireland, the whole grounds were bright green and full of different plant species and lots and lots of flowers. I particularly liked their greenhouse. The beautiful white medal perfectly balanced the contrast between nature and industrial features while complementing the space and giving these particular plants a specific place to grow, such as succulents. The rose gardens reminded me of something from Alice in Wind with how the grass paths were weaved between the rose bushes and some of the flowers looked fake because they were so healthy and vibrant.  There are two newer greenhouses that were built specifically for tropical plants. Inside of each of these greenhouses, the temperature and humidity was set to stay at the perfect settings for these tropical plants to thrive. They were multiple stories so that the trees could grow tall and the vines could grow long and even go all the way up to the rafters. A great place to see and spend time on a sunny or partly cloudy day!!

Let your kid run wild for 45 minutes and then watch as he sleeps like an angel for the rest of the day. The playground is an eclectic mix of rope swings and climbing frames, with the big net climber in the centre as the hub for childhood adventuring. I still have memories of racing friends to the top and back down again. Overall this is a great place to bring the under 12's in your life. It is a fun and exciting place for them to run around and tire themselves out.

I blame the 90s. Anyway, this is a great place for little ones and young people to blow off some steam, get some fresh air, and have fun. It's like a Peter-Pan-Esque playground, with treehouse type structures and slides and climbing frames and even a zip wire, which always scared me - I was never brave enough. It's got handy parking and it's in the environs of the gorgeous Cavehill, so if it's a nice day, and you have sprogs - get them up here for a day of fun.

One of the places that's on my list at least twice is Delamont. As it's a country park, you obviously need a dry day unless you enjoy sliding through mud and rain and then throwing away all the kids' clothes when you get home. Along with your sanity and sense of humour. And your promise to yourself not to drink wine during the week. So, Delomont, what's it got going on? Lots. I really do get that feel good factor from a day having fun in the fresh air and that's exactly what I get at Delamont. You pay £4.50 to get in an park the car and after that you don't have to spend any more money. There is a brilliant park which keeps my kids amused for literally hours - lots of climbing and rope swings and giant slides. There are a few picnic tables in this area too, but not enough so bring some picnic rugs and sit on the grass as there's loads of space to spread out. After lunch go for a walk on one of the trails through the beautiful scenery (high praise indeed from me as my usual preference for scenery is shop fronts or a TV screen). Even lazy teens will enjoy the trails as they are dotted with interesting sculptures and things to climb on. An added bonus is the schedule of events during the summer which are just every child's dream - bug hunts, night time paddling, Viking battles and boat trips to name a few. It really is an Enid Blyton kind of place. Check the website before you choose a date for your day out. There is a small shop so you can grab an ice cream or cold drink to revive you after your walk. The only other thing you may need to spend money on is the mini railway, but if your kids are older than 6 or 7, this is likely to be dismissed as 'for babies'. If you do go on it, you will feel like a complete plonker, but suck it up, the little kids love it!

I am a bit biased, as I used to live less than half a mile from Delamont and I loved it. I walked around Delamont up to 3 times per week I know every part of it and I miss it after moving to Belfast. It costs £4 entry to the car park, which is right in the heart of the country park. There are several walking routes you can follow and they are signposted from the car park and along the way. Most have view points from where you can see right accross Strangford Lough and it's islands right over to Portaferry with the Mourne Mountains to the right. There is a canoe trail from where you can paddle over to the islands and have a walk around. Along the walking trails you can come accross an old Rath, a bird watching hut and an outdoor education centre from where schools have their field trips. The tall stone was erected in 2000 and can be seen from many towns surrounding Strangford Lough. During September there is a re-enactment of the vikings landing 'Magnus Barelegs Festival'. The kids play park is fantastic, as it includes tower like slides, climbing frames, swings and a super zip line. There is a miniture railway with a coal fired train, this costs £2.50 and is really fun. It takes you around the track sounding its horn, taking you through the tunnel and past all of the outdoor gym equipment. Delamont was one of the first places to have these installed and they are a great addition to your walk. There is a small caravan park at the entry. Delamont really is a must for anyone wanting to see the real beauty of the rolling drumlins of Co Down.

When it is sunny however this place gets very busy, especially by the lake where people don't just picnic - and indeed BBQ - but kayak, fish, walk, cycle, and bring their dogs for a swim. There are plenty of amenities on site or very nearby, such as plenty of parking, clean public bathrooms, a small cafe, and a large shop within easy walking distance. There is also a huge maze for you to try and find your way out of and that alone could take up a good hour. Entrance fee per car is £4.50 - a bargain for a full day's outing. Tip: there are some rubbish bins but not a lot; people tend to take their rubbish with them. The grounds are kept exceptionally clean.
