Good old Viccy Park has been dragged into the 21st Century, partly due to the huge redeveloping of the the whole riverside area and upgrading of the sewage system in the area, seemingly the park is a huge emergency tank to stop Sydenham disappearing underwater, but until the apocalypse arrives it's a pretty decent park. Firstly it's now connected to the Airport Road via the Sam Thompson Bridge. meaning that it's accessible by bike from the City Centre, in fact it's my default cycle route to work now, secondly the car park has been enlarged and the old bandstand demolished, the old toilets are gone and a new 20p job installed, unsure if this is really progress as queues form at busy times. The outer trail and inner trail are now sandy as opposed to muddy, indeed the trail round the inner island is a miracle compared to the previous quagmire, coupled to the fact that it now boats outdoor gym equipment too, it's a peasant walk. The old playground has been totally refurbished and brought up to modern standards and the work is still ongoing.
But the old bugbear of the tunnel into the park will always be a problem, it is a deathtrap, I live locally and I've seen so many near misses at it, I've lost count, add the weekly Parkrun or kids football competitions and it's chaos in the local streets, surely there should be access from the A2 or Connsbank Road?
But if you're on foor or bike, and can dodge death in the tunnel, it's a good park. read more
