Incredible! I came in as they were about to close and the manager gave me his phone number and said "call me for a special personal time to come in when we're normally closed". Johnny pulled out very large sails for my boat and helped me choose just what I needed. I bought it on the spot and love it!! He gave me a free T-shirt after I bought the sail. The service and the knowledge is amazing , they have everything you need ! and if they don't they can get it in a timely fashion! There prices beat everyone's! This is it! The place for sailers and for those with any kind of boat from production to custom crafts. Parts you will not find anywhere else other than the occasional eBay find. It's a once a week stop for me. I plan my weeks around the two days a week they are open. The crew at MInneys is supper amazing and helpful. You need to be patient with the small crew and many customers needing help. The prices are extremely affordable and better than anywhere else if you find what you need. I've been coming here for years to get parts for my 50' Hatteras and other boats I've owned and usually have had a great time in this store but today the two kids, bald one and long hair, were nothing but beyond disrespectful to me. I wanted a black knob for my transmission shifter which I was only able to find on a whole transmission control with 2 knobs. I told them that I wanted to leave them with whole control system so that they can resell as I just wanted the black knob. I also asked what kind of discount I could get, if any. Bald kid told me, 'we don't give discounts' which is clearly not true because last time I was there they gave me one which I told bald kid and he said you're not buying that much today. I said I just thought I'd ask and I still wanted to leave the whole part minus the 1 black knob with them. Bald kid proceeded to tell me 'what do you want to do steal it from us'? I said what? I'm just asking if you'd consider a discount because I want to leave this here for you to resell. He then said we don't sell parts to which I said, yes you do this whole store is selling parts, that's why we all come here. When I told him that was rude that he asked if I wanted to steal from him (for asking for a discount) he denied saying that. I told him that he did say that and that it was on their cameras and on my audio recorder which had been on from something I was doing before. He then told me to get the fuck out of the store because they had the right to refuse service. The long hair kid started raising his voice to me also asked me to leave to which I told him to stop yelling at me. He told me to leave and I said nope, I'd like for you to call Ernie. I've been coming here for years. I'm buying this. In the end, he hastily took my card and charged me which I was happy to pay regardless. I am just blown away that Ernie would allow his staff to speak with old or new customers this way. That is completely unacceptable. I don't care if these kids were having a bad day, or if they didn't like someone asking them for a discount, those types of things do not warrant this type of disrespectful behavior. First of all I called and emailed minneys and asked them if they had propellers and had propellers my size . They said ( minneys) said yes they do . But I is a little bit bigger in size but will work . So I paid them thru my credit card and had props delivered to Wilmington prop. They said ok . The props needed to be tuned. That cost me $1408. 00 in addition to purchasing the props from minneys. After fixing props . I took props to boat yard. And boat yard tried putting on props . Those props will not fit on boat . The props are to big and is hitting hull. I then called to minneys then they said just shave props . There is more to then just shaving props . I explained to minneys. They said Wilmington prop is a scam . And they are always getting backlash from Wilmington prop. But they tell me this after ( minneys) got paid and delivered props to Wilmington prop. Hello. I want to introduce myself. I am Sherry Brunt and I was born in Newport Beach, raised aboard a schooner, cruising, Newport Harbor being my home base. This is one of the venerable meccae (sure it's a word) of nautical everything on the west coast. Sure there's Louis's in Wilmington or the Treasure Chest in San Diego (presuming it's still there), but for sheer breadth and depth, it's hard to beat Minney's. There's an entire yardful of line (once onboard, a rope becomes a line) of every conceivable diameter, length and composition. Plus more line inside. There are aisles and aisles of fixtures, fasteners - a roomful of propellers - another roomful of electronic oddities, and the list goes on. My last trip to Minney's resulted in the acquisition of a pair of 9' oars. Try buying 9' oars new - they're $400 a pair by the time they get to you. These were $95 less a small cash discount - for the pair. Got 'em home, and after some sanding and varnish they were gleaming new and ready for use. The worst thing about this place is that in and amongst the junk there's too much good stuff. If you're within driving distance, check 'em out or at least call before buying anything signficant anywhere else. Think of it as the Pick-n-Pull of nautical gear, except that most everything is already neatly laid out on a shelf or somewhere for you. read more

Whoa. I sail very little, but often go browsing this place for ideas and inspiration. Beware, you may leave this place with ideas of adventure, so take caution and set a budget. If you're going to browse, check out the map room upstairs where almost every map there is $1.95. You'll leave with an armful 3 hours laer. (true story) Also, they have buckets of stainless hardware that can cost a fortune brand new. Great place for the guy with a garage and a short DIY list. read more

I had purchased the wrong sized chain online for my windlass by accident and shipping it back was cost prohibitive due to its weight so I did a swap with Minney's for a small very fair fee to the right size....saved me a bundle. read more

Its a marine junk store and makes no pretensions. Prices used to be great, now they just OK. Used electronics prices have gotten crazy high, like $195 EACH for an ancient Raytheon R20 radar and a matching display with a cut cable. $95 for an old crystal controlled SSB, $195 for a salt corroded 1982 vintage synthesized SSB, etc. I made lower offers (about 50% of asking price) and all were rejected so I left with nothing. It was bascially take it or leave it, no negotiating. Had they agreed on more reasonable prices I would have spent a few hundred bucks on my visit. Chances of these old radios and radars working are low, so they are overly expensive parts sets, and you are not even sure what parts are good. Prices on some things like used sails are very good. Prices on stainless hardware (like big stainless machine bolts) are quite low. Prices on used bumper balls and fenders are high-ish. It's really fun to browse the place and although it appears cluttered it's VERY well organized considering how many different items there are. I saw a few things that I recognized from 16 years ago, so they are patient indeed. Don't expect a big markdown because something hasn't sold. I like Minneys. It's your ONLY chance of finding an exact part for something really old, like a NECO, Sperry or Wood Freeman autopilot. I don't begrudge most of their prices (excepting old electronics), real estate around Newport Beach is very expensive and they provide a real resource for mariners. They really know their inventory. If you ask they will find. I just wish they'd get more realistic about their used marine electronics prices. They will have some of that stuff forever if they keep the prices so high. If something can be used as party decoration or a movie prop don't bother trying to buy it. It will either be a rental item only or priced in the stratosphere. Still, with all my gripes, I give them 4 stars. There isnt another Minney's anywhere on the coast. Its like a year long marine swap meet but without the bargain prices. I found an unobtainable part for an old autopilot here 16 years ago and for that I remain grateful. It only cost $40 back in 1997 before their used electronics pricing went nuts. That old 1950s vintage pilot is still working in 2013 thanks to Minney's. read more

It saddens me to see the negative comments about my store. I am attempting to retire and and trying to ease into the back ground. The man that bitched about our electronic prices might find it interesting that an e-bay seller spends 2 to 3 grand a month purchasing items at our "off the shelf" prices less a 10% volume discount, many of the items he purchases are electronics. I am constantly lowering prices and sometimes raising them. Found a brand new Edson 18 GPM bilge pump my crew had priced at $79.00? Best price on Amazon was $600.00 plus. I added a one in front of the seventy nine and its still a great value. Sorry bout the poor attitudes of some of my crew. I'm good to them do profit sharing and just gave them all a $100.00 gift for labor day. The guy you bitched about gives me a hard time also. I was in the market for a decent used spinnaker, and found one listed here for a reasonable price -- particularly considering they were running a 30% off special. I narrowed my choices down to two sails. Chuck sent pictures of the two sails promptly. I chose the better of the two -- a radial-head rated as a 7. In comparison, another loft wanted three times as much for a sail with patches and stains and no bag. The sail arrived today. I am thrilled with the condition -- a nice, clean sail with minimal signs of use which even included a turtle bag. Now, the turtle bag shows some signs of age and I don't think it's original to the sail, but it was a bonus, and I have no complaints whatsoever. Unlike some other outfits I've dealt with, Minney's doesn't gouge on shipping. For around $200, I've got a sail that should give good service for many years.
