Came here on a night where they had live Hawaiian music. The speakers were super loud, but the…read moremusic was fantastic. It took a while for the waitress to take our orders. One waitress said that she was going to come back and then didn't return for over 15 minutes plus. My friend got the Loco Loco over tater tots, which was very filling and delicious. I got the ribs. Initially the only rib that was hot was the end piece and as soon as I cut it, the remainder was ice cold. I told the waitress who took it back to the kitchen, and they reheated it. The ribs overall were tasty, though not the most tender ribs I've ever ever had. I did like the French fries though it was cold after they reheated my ribs.

Walking through the entrance we were greeted by a server who also doubled as a bartender. We proceeded to order the following: Mai Tai's, Jamaican Jerk seasoned chicken tenders (wife) and the Lava burger (me)...both orders with the hand cut tavern fries. Since the restaurant was fairly empty, our orders came out fairly quickly. Both of our orders arrived hot and were very flavorful. As we enjoyed our meals and sipped our deliciously strong Mai Tai's, we enjoyed people watching and eavesdropping on the conversations held by locals. Throughout our visit, the server did a great job of checking in on us. If you're in Hilo and have a yearning for some delicious food and strong drinks, I recommend checking out Hilo Town Tavern. My only regret is that we did not visit during a karaoke night!

Note: The food court mall was a little off the beaten path, behind a gas station. It's an open air seating and houses a number of local establishments that seem more catered to locals than tourists. There is ample seating, and restrooms are available. The only bad part about it is it can get a bit hot and stuffy in there, but at least they had big fans blowing. The chicken karaage (family size) was oh so good - very fresh, big pieces, and a yummy taste! Everything was fried fresh to order. Found it sweet that a haole woman who spoke fluent Japanese seemed to be training a younger Japanese gentleman who didn't speak much English. Wished we were staying on the island longer as we'd love to come back to try other menu items!

Hesitation was instilled once I realized it was part of a random food court kind of in the middle of nowhere but did not count it out completely. 3. Disregarded as there seemed to be potentially better options out there for our meal choices. 4. Enjoy our other meal option. 5. Per chance, happen to swing by this food court per request of a family member in hopes of grabbing some Malasadas in the bakery nearby afterwards. 6. Realizing that we stumbled into the food court anyways, it was fated that we were meant to proceed with placing an order for some chicken. 7. After a short wait for food to be prepared, I'd confirm that the fried chicken is solid, tater tots were good as well, and the mac salad was just okay.

The exterior, and interior, of the building is nothing special. As a matter of fact, that's part of what I loved about it; it helps you realize it's an all around fantastic food joint, not just somewhere that charges overpriced amounts for average food because of the "vibe." It's extremely busy inside this place, and staff was extremely friendly and pretty quick with turning out orders. I ordered a two entree plate, which consisted of their teriyaki chicken and pina colada shrimp, per the recommendation of the woman taking my order. The shrimp was incredible and the pins colada sauce that it comes with it's something I now dream about! The chicken was also great. It's dark meat, which is something to keep in mind in case you're a pickier eater, but the char and flavor of it was wonderful. For the sides I ordered rice and their mac salad. I'm not usually a mac salad kind of guy, but this changed my mind and I can now say I'm a true fan. This is perhaps one of the best places I've eaten between the two islands I visited on this trip, and I can't say enough good things about it!

He does a great job. The food is solid. It's just not as lively as it once was. The stage is now storage as is the beautiful bar. There is SO much potential for this place to be hopping with business (live music, karaoke night, bingo night, etc..), but currently it's just good food in a beautiful restaurant. Nothing wrong with that. It's worked for them, but I'll always miss the days when Sergio brought passion and vitality to not just the food, but also the environment.
