I originally came across Birdie's while searching for something special for my kids, but it didn't take long before I realized they have just as many amazing finds for Mom too. Needless to say, my shopping cart grew pretty quickly! I'm shopping all the way from Texas, and although I've never had the chance to walk through their doors in person, they have treated me with the same warmth and personal attention I would expect if I were a longtime local customer. That really stood out to me. The customer service has been exceptional. They are kind, responsive, accommodating, and genuinely appreciative of their customers. Nothing about the experience feels transactional. You can tell there are real people behind this business who care deeply about their shop, the products they carry, and the people choosing to support them. I LOVE supporting small businesses, and this is exactly why. Birdie's at the Barn offers something a big-box store simply can't replicate: personality, thoughtfully selected products, genuine kindness, and customer service that makes you feel valued. Their selection is incredible too. I love finding unique things for my kids that I don't see everywhere else, while also being able to find beautiful and fun things for myself. Strange enough, I now live in Los Angeles so I frequent the SoCal locations when I can and was stoked to see what this one had to offer. This shop has some arcade machines in the front, a very solid movie selection, retro toys for sale, and of course, a bunch of retro video games, accessories, and consoles to pick up if thats what you need. My current "looking for" list is pretty much just Gamecube games and Criterion Blu Rays, so I was super stoked to stumble across a copy of The Graduate when I didn't see any Gamecube games I was looking for. Like all retro stores, prices here can vary and can sometimes be good and sometimes be bad, things were pretty reasonably prices on this trip and I left a happy camper. Overall, Retro Games Plus is one of the better game stores in Connecticut and thanks to Game Exchange becoming a slop factory, definitely the best in this area. The staff here is knowledgable, the selection is great, and even if you can't find a game, you are sure to find something else when you stop by.

I've had a blast selling off my old baseball cards (my kids don't want them) locally and on-line, A few months ago we also sold off our stamp and coin collection, except for some commemorative Canadian coins minted for the 1988 Calgary Olympics. I contacted KC's Gold, as well as a coin dealer in Toronto to gauge their interest in those Olympic coins. Fred from KC responded right away but his Canadian counterpart never responded after two e-mails. How un-Canadian of him!! Anyway, I visited Fred today to accept his very fair offer. The store is awesome, with baseball cards, coins and vinyl LPs everywhere. Fred was one of the very nicest shop owners I've ever met. He was a real pleasure to work with.

Since I visited around Halloween, there were a lot of fun Halloween shapes like vampire teeth and candy corn. I was also really excited to find the Sakura Matcha Pocky. They coin themselves they are West Hartford's finest children's consignment shop. The pricing was fair for most items (toys, decor, etc), but clothing seemed a bit high. They do have a rewards/loyalty program which I signed up for--I got 10% off my first purchase AND $5 off. Also, if you are local or close by they have 10% off Tuesdays. The young ladies that rang us up were very nice. I'd likely visit again since the shop is very clean. A lot of second hand children shops are cluttered, disorganized, and have a strange smell. I'm completely new to this area of Connecticut and thought I would try to search out the local yarn stores. I called first before going to make sure that they were open and the woman who answered the phone was very polite and friendly. When I went to the store and walked in, there were only three people in the store (it is a small store). One person was working behind the counter, and the other two were having a conversation. I was in the store looking around for probably 20 minutes and at no point did anyone say hello, ask me if I needed help finding something, or what I was making etc., etc. I'm used to yarn stores in New York City, and that hustle and bustle, but I have to say even in the NYC stores, they say hello and welcome you in--and a lot of times they ask you what project(s) you're working on, what yarn you're looking for, and if you need any help. They try to engage you. That is part of what makes for a good yarn store experience. At this store, however, there was no engagement whatsoever. I thought it was very odd. The vibe was cold. Then, I guess the one customer they had left the store, and I was alone with these two people for another 10 minutes and they still never said a word to me. I just found it really strange. In terms of their selection of yarn, they seemed to have a lot of Berroco. Some Malabrigo, and small representations of Sandnes Garn, Istex, Madeline Tosh, and Jamieson & Smith and others. The store is very clean and tidy and nicely merchandised, with numerous store samples. I think the general lighting in the store could be improved upon, but many yarns stores seem to suffer from lighting challenges. There seems to be plenty of offstreet parking in a small parking lot in front of the store. Will I recommend or go back to this store? No. Why not? - No customer engagement/strange, standoffish vibe. Life is too short for that. - Small yarn selection; not enough higher end yarns. There are other yarn stores out there with better selections. Not worth the drive.
