Adopter Beware! I recently adopted a 6 month old pup from…read morethe Oregon Coast Humane Society. A day or two later the dog was sneezing thick yellow mucus. when i called i was told maybe she was "just getting used to the new environment", but it was also mentioned that there was "some kennel cough going around" in the facility (why want i told before?). the puppy recovered, but by then my other (fully vaccinated) dog and my sons 2 dogs (including a 2 month old puppy) were all infected with this highly contagious illness. my 2 year old dog ended up the sickest, barely able to breath and not eating or drinking for several days, it took her a month to fully recover. meanwhile, we did the responsible thing (which the kennel should have done) and isolated all of our dogs so no others would suffer as mine had. I paid a higher than expected adoption fee ($500) but rationalized that it was for a good cause. however, i am now under the impression that this kennel gets shipments of dogs and puppies and after only a couple of days makes them available to go out into the community. makes me wonder if it's about turning their "inventory" quickly, even if it means starting a possible epidemic in their community? my dog was lucky, but if she'd been old or unhealthy she might not have made it through the illness. I would not adopt from here again nor would i bring an animal to this facility. ask a lot of questions and isolate any animal if you choose to adopt from there, because they don't do it for you! that being said the staff were all very nice, but they need a policy to isolate and observe for a month, rather than 2-3 days, in order to protect the animal community when they bring shipments of animals in

In a market in which…read morethere used to be several small, locally-owned fish stores, this is now one of only two left and I do not visit the others anymore. Maybe at some point I will review them to say why, but for now, let's focus on why I like this place. Pros: ===================== -This is a fish store, not a pet store. You won't find dog poop bags as one reviewer was searching for, nor will you find lizards, or kittens... you get the point. You will get an owner that knows something about fish. -Because he knows about fish, you can trust his advice and input. -If you want a particular plant, or fish, he can probably get it for you. And, unlike one of his competitors, he actually follows through. -His prices are very, very fair for his stock. The importance of this in a market increasingly dominated by big box pet store cannot be overstated. -I have never gotten a fish disease from his store. I cannot say the same for either big box chain. Cons: ====================== -This is a small owner/operator business. He has faced a lot of challenges since COVID and his stock is not what it once was. But this could change if hobbyists like me stick with the fish store in our community. -There is one person, the owner, doing almost everything on the at least 50 tanks he has running. Yes, I do see an occasional dead fish, but I can say the same of pretty much every fish store I have been in. And they all had multiple employees. In the final analysis this is my go to fish store. If you are a FISH person, rather than a show tank person - or just a casual pet person, it should be yours too.
