He was funny, engaging, educational, and safely got us to all of the places. I was a solo female traveler and this was a great excursion for me. My reason for giving 4/5 stars is because I felt we were a bit rushed in some of the towns. We didn't have a lot of time to really explore and wander. They were quick stops, some of only 15 minutes. In Lochness, if you were doing the boat tour you truly didn't have any time to wander or grab a bite to eat. The sights were amazing though and I felt I got a splash of the Highlands life! The cows, Baxter, Honey, and Haymitch were 5/5 stars! Pay the 1pound to feed them! I would absolutely still recommend this trip to anyone! You see incredible sights and the quick stops are still 100% worth it! Book the trip! :)

Do yourself a favor, if you're going to see Scotland, book a private tour with Duncan McNab…read more Short review: Duncan is one heck of a tour guide. Unpretentious, knowledgeable, very personable, and a true Scotsman who wants to share his country with you. Long, romanticized review: There is nothing better than experiencing a country through the eyes of someone whose beloved home it is. Before saying it's obvious, understand this; any tour guide knows history, any can say "this is the most visited site in Edinburgh", most can even tell a tall tale or two to make you laugh but it takes a very special guide to create an experience. Experience? It goes without saying, the sites, monuments, abbeys, are stunning in their beauty. The countryside itself, romantic. Hollywood tale of Braveheart debunked. The Holy Grail at Roslyn Chapel; hmmm maybe. It's what's beyond that. It's about a telling of centuries old tale and believingly relating it one's own youth. About a drive along the modern piers, enroute to the Highlands showing off modern industrialization while taking subtle nationalistic punches at the unified UK that only a proud, long time, Scotsman can make. About lunching at a pub and listening to a father's hopes for the future of his children and how similar yet very different they are from our own. It breathes life into the country and makes it a living experience. Details: Send a booking request via the company website. Provide a list of dates and an idea of what you want to see. You do not need to be specific (I asked for castle and abbey ruins plus a distillery). Single or multiple day tours with lodging. Private vehicle (luxury sedan to small bus) based on party size. Rates vary. (Paid £350 / day). £150 due via PayPal at time of booking confirmation, the remainder due on the day of the tour. Day of the tour, meet the charming Duncan and be prepared for a truly memorable experience.

Our guide, Rory, is a local and has a PhD in History from the University of Edinburgh, so you're getting a perfect mix of academic depth and genuine, lived-in perspective. Over about 2.5 hours, he brought the Old Town to life through its architecture, layers of religious history, and the cultural shifts that shaped what Edinburgh is today. We also walked along the charming Victoria street which was rumored to be the inspiration for Harry Potter's Diagon Alley. Rory was incredibly knowledgeable and kept the whole group engaged the entire time. If you're visiting Edinburgh and love history, culture, and architecture, this tour is 100% worth your time.

Jen Cresswell, our tour guide, was engaging, knowledgeable, and her enthusiasm was contagious! There was a good combination of Edinburgh history and Harry Potter/JK Rowling facts. James explained everything to us and how to properly take photos - my wife used her camera, I used my iPhone and James brought an extra camera for our son to use. He also was a great guide on the history of what we were photographing. We talk about this tour fondly and highly recommend it to anyone that wants to learn about photography and Edinburgh. We both had very little (arguably no) experience in photography. James was exceptionally knowledgeable and patient with us as he taught us even the most basic aspects of using our cameras. We crafted our custom tour itinerary after having been inspired to visit by watching the Outlander television series. We wanted to visit many of the destinations features on the series. Additionally, we wanted to include many gorgeous, scenic destinations including the Eilean Donan Castle and Glenfinnan Viaduct. James guided us through the Highlands, selecting charming accommodations at the Ballachulish Hotel. James is a great conversationalist and guide. Above all, however, James is an artist. Many of the sites that we selected for our tour were "fan favorites" that James had visited many times before. He shared his previous experience in scouting out these locations by taking us to different vantage points to capture photos that differ in a significant way from the pictures that we could have taken while on a bus tour. As we drove through the winding roads in the Highlands, James always kept an eye to the scenery and lighting conditions. While driving along and fully engrossed in conversation he could see the opportunities for amazing photos and would pull over to allow us to capture them. He could adapt to the changing scenery and changing weather conditions by setting up the shots using those factors as an advantage. He even showed us where there were certain items he had previously discovered that add an extra interest in a photo (a large rock, piece of driftwood, or colorful boat). James adapted to our requests while on the tour. We had established our itinerary in advance of the trip. On arrival, we discovered a love for the hairy Highland coos (cows). We shared that love with James and he adapted our tour to ensure that we captured as many coos as possible. Despite having been a professional photographer for decades, James never showed any annoyance when we whipped out the cell phones for a selfie! (I think his reaction seemed more like amusement at my sister's near-obsession with selfies.) My only regret throughout the whole experience was that we could not hire James to tour us around during our time in Edinburgh because he was booked on another custom tour over those days. At the start of our tour I was recounting they difficulty that I was having capturing the cityscape from Calton Hill at sunset lighting conditions and he identified in an instant what the problem was and advised me how to fix it. So, long story short, I have to go back now and you better believe I will be calling James when I do!
