Usually I yelp exclusively to food-related spots since I am obese but I will occasionally diverge for extraordinary non-edible experiences or some mad props like this one. My boy Ming and I go way back. He has been fading me up for more than a decade, practically watched me grow up. Whenever he switched hair studios, my dad and I seriously tracked him down from place to place until he settled here opening up his own joint. If you get a cut from Ming, you will notice the great attention to detail, even on pretty simple hair cuts like mine. And for the price $8, it's value to the max. Ming is the master of the clippers. Why is there 2 yelp locations for this place? But anyway, I've went there 2 times, both decent. But, I HATED my experience with the sylist (same guy twice). During the whole both times, he COMPLAINED, AND COMPLAINED, AND COMPLAINED about how much hair and how thick my hair is. Uhhhhh, excuse me???? That's not really the way to make your customer feel welcome or comfortable. Definitely not developing any customer loyalty to your place. It's unprofessional, as a stylist, you should be able to work with different hair types. And lastly, it's straight up RUDE. I couldn't get out of there fast enough to stop hearing him. Both times, I KNOW that the price didn't go up but he charged me more the second time and I know why. First time, I came with my mom, and she was there the whole time. As Chinese people, you know well enough to not try to jip other Chinese for ridiculous reasons because you're just going to cause a huge scene. The second time I went by myself and he probably recognized me because of my thick hair and hated dealing with it all over again. To be honest, I've never went to a hair salon all my life as my mother has a barber license, and has always cut my hair. As it became inconvenient to have my mother continue to cut my hair, I decided to venture off and search for a salon. I was hesistant at first to go to any, but Ming's Hair Salon is the place to go! I've been going here for the past 5 years now! My experience with this salon exceeded my expectations. I always come in with a general idea of how I want to have my hair cut, and they will incorporate their professional advice on how to style my hair to better shape my facial structure along with what I want. I also have thick layers of hair, and Raymond, the barber, is very patient and attentive to your needs as he is cutting. I always leave the salon feeling like there is some weight off my shoulders. My head feels so much lighter after a haircut, which leaves me feeling so great and refreshed! They also provide a relaxing washing service before and after your hair cut. And will help me straighten my hair for the day, as they noticed I do that on a daily basis, after my cut. This place is definitely worth the wait, and your money as they provide efficient, quality service you will love! Definitely will continue coming back, and recommend! read more

What? A Chinatown haircut can look fabulous? You crazy! Well, it's true! Besides the parking (I had to walk up 3 very steep hills...by the time I got back to my car, I had sweated my entire 'do away.) the whole experience was great. I walked in and got attention quickly. The wait was about twenty minutes, which I don't mind since they had some good magazines to keep me from boredom. The lady that washed my hair seemed new cause she was super careful. I was thinking "scrub that sucker!! it ain't gonna wash itself!" but her hands were pretty soft, nonetheless. I have super long hair, and just wanted to relayer it. And that's EXACTLY what they did. Nothing more, nothing less. Very simple, and it looked great! They didn't cut too much, though the guy did ask if I wanted to straight perm it because I guess it would look nicer, but I'm broke as a joke (hello, Chinatown.) He finished in less than half an hour, with the blow drying and some shiny hair product. Too bad my hair is never as soft as when I first walk out of the salons, but that's my problem. I got my hair straightened here about two weeks ago. They did a pretty good job, but it took 6 hours. They got really busy during the afternoon and pretty much left me sitting in the chair for about an hour with wet, unstraigthend hair while they tended to the other customers. My hair is very coarse, frizzy and I have a lot of it. I did not appreciate the comments about how difficult my hair was to work with (bad service) Ming cut my hair, I think I turned out alright, he thinned it out a lot. I retrimmed my bangs afterwards. Altogether, it was worth it for the price. $130 total plus tip. read more

Maybe I didn't get Ming nor Jason because I have little to rave about compared to everyone else it seems. My go-to barber is down in Cupertino and I'm used to paying $30 (including a $5 tip) for a shampoo-trim-rinse about once a month. However, as I've recently moved to the city, it's become somewhat inconvenient to rely on my go-to barber, so I decided to give Ming & Jason's a shot based on the good Yelp reviews. I entered the hair salon looking like Mcdreamy needing just a few millimeters cut all around. I left looking like a Chinaman with a fade similar to what I was used to back when I was in highschool. Whoever compares the haircuts that they get here to the $40-60 haircuts that they used to get somewhere else was getting ripped off before. For $13, I kind of got what I paid for--a flat top. Three stars because it was cheap and I can live with females not acknowledging me for a week or two (guy hair grows fast). Had it been a $20-30 cut, I would consider this place a 1-2 star. read more

This is a salon in Chinatown after all, not your high-end luxury salon. Obviously you're going to need to be tolerant of the parking situation, the level of English spoken and other patrons bringing their kids in. If you want a high level of personal service and attentiveness, then don't waste your time here. Now onto the haircuts. My husband has been getting his haircut from Ming since 1997? He only trusts Ming with his hair. So even it means a 2-hour wait (and trust me, we've waited that long before because Ming is popular and we don't make appointments), we just check in with Ming and walk around Chinatown to grab a bite or do some cheap grocery shopping. Ming is very detailed and attentive when giving my husband the haircut. My husband is pretty picky with his haircut and requests that Ming cuts it so that it "looks like it was cut 2 weeks ago" (he doesn't like the freshly cut look). Ming nails it everytime! read more

Im not the statistic that for every one person you tell someone something positive you tell 10 people something negative about a business. in fact, i embrace small business'. So about 8 months ago i was looking for a nice/cheap hair salon around nob hill, where i live, to get a quick cut. my hair grows WAY too fast to justify paying any more than 20$ for a trim. and frankly, a 3 on the side and trim on the top anyone can do (i would, but my shakey coffee hand wont allow. loovveee my coffee. see #Philz). ive been about 6 times, usually on my days off after leaving the gym. seeing as my normal hair cut spot is in the sunset where i work (reverse commute, shutup i know) i opted for convenience. which isnt always the best way. every time ive been its "ok" at best. its just that, a trim. nothing memorable, but a trim. but this last time was the straw that broke the camels back. i go in, sit down, "3 on sides, trim on top". simple enough? wrong. maybe it was the language barrier but i walked out looking like a lesbian marine (not bashing lesbians or marines, props). the sides were probably a two, he cut about 3 inches off the time (borderline buzzed) and gave me a SUPER high fade. i mean, wtf dude? maybe it was a language barrier seeing how much yelpers are chinese but i wasnt asking for a complicated cut that took much more than 4 words. im not asking to look like the next big korean pop star and goku from dragonball z, i wanted a fkn trim! you, my friend, FAIL. never ever again will i put so much weight on convenience when it comes to a haircut. sandwich, maybe. haircut, not anymore! the only reason they get the graditude of one star is because theyre around the corner. but so is nob hill theatre and you dont see me getting lap dances from buff gay men either! *shutters* read more

I walked in here randomly -- almost on a dare -- after dinner in Chinatown. My expectations were low, but I actually had a great time getting my haircut here. I didn't have anything special in mind; I simply told Jason (or was it Ming?), "I trust you", and with a little input from my colleague, I received a very different 'do that pushed me just far enough out of my comfort zone. The process was just as impressive as the results: Hair washed before the cut, cautious study of my hair before the cut began, confirmation from me that I liked it each step of the way, full styling of the cut to solidify my opinion, then another wash before restyling, and I was good to go. Imagine my surprise when, after nearly a full hour of full attention to my cut and style, the girl told me $50. I thought, hm, that's a little high. No, it was *$15* dollars. If I lived in the Bay Area, I'm sure I'd be a regular. read more

I liked everything about this place. Low-key, no-wait (on a Thursday morning so maybe not saying too much), and the guy (I should have asked if he's Ming or Jason) was attentive and accommodating. You walk in and see two Cantonese guys chit-chatting to each other constantly, and with their to-the-point greeting, maybe you might feel a bit uneasy if it's a good decision to opt for a cheap haircut. But when you realize he actually cares for how your hair looks, and when asking for your feedback before he finishes up he actually follows up on your detailed requests, you make up your mind and you tell yourself to be back for another one in a month. I was happy to give him $15 for a $12 service. And when he says "Thanks, see ya" he means it. Or at least that's what I thought when I was walking out. I can't guarantee you'd experience the same deal on a busy weekend or so. I'd have to see for myself. Also, if you're used to a hairdresser that chats you up with idle conversations this place is not what you would feel comfortable in. Lastly, the only reason why I'd take down a star is the guy washed my scalp too thoroughly with his nails. Not that they were sharp like talons, but next time I think I'll ask him to go easy on the raking. Or who knows, I might grow into it, just like I grew into tea tree oil shampoos. read more

Not gonna lie, Jason rocks my socks. And it's not even because he's related to me. I totally thought I was getting special treatment on the insane amount of time he spends on my hair, but apparently he does that to everyone. Go figure. $20 gets me a wash, a cut, and a fat tip out the door. Jason has impeccable attention to detail, making sure all angles are even and split-end-less before letting me get out of the chair. I can do without the awkward "how's life" chit-chat, especially since I never have anything exciting that I would want to share with him. Ming has been my barber since... 1999 or 2000. Wow, how time has come and gone! He moved around a bit, but he always stayed in Chinatown. He knows what youngsters (who is getting older by the day) want, and he's very popular. If you walk in to the shop, chances are, you'll have to wait around an hour! For $9 + $2 tip for a great haircut (once a month), it's an awesome deal. It sucks that I am recommending this place, because that means more customers for Ming (and the other barbers, the place is quite small to wait in). More customers mean more waiting time. But it's all good. I want Ming and his barber shop to stay in business for as long as possible! read more

Not sure if the other younger guy in the salon is Jason, but Ming is major owner of the salon. He's been my grandma's hairstylist for awhile when he worked at the BIG salon on Stockton and we stuck by him when he opened his own salon on Clay. Recently, I've also used him as my stylist and I must say, I have no complaints. He's a pretty opinionated stylist, with his own mind to how he wants to cut your hair. So beware when you come in with an image of how you want to cut your hair and he straight up tells you that wouldn't be good for the type of head shape you have and recommends something else. Or maybe he is only that straightforward with his usual customers. heh. Despite all that, he definitely makes you look good! He cuts all types of hairs, male and female, and he takes his time doing it. Even if the shop is packed on a super busy day, he'll take his time and care for your hair. That's what I like about him. A female haircut is roughly ~$20, and a perm (if you have short hair) is $50. read more

For $15, you get your hair washed, your hair cut, and your hair washed again. The first washing is crucial for me, because I wear my hair in a faux hawk and there have been many times in which a barber would cut my hair with my hair still gelled up. It would look pretty good at the shop, then I would realize that it was a terrible cut once I went home and washed my hair. Jerry did a great job of cutting my hair and was very meticulous in making sure it looked exactly as I wanted. I will definitely be coming back. read more

Apparently my boyfriend claims that one side of his head dents in a bit, and only Ming knows how to cut it right. He spends a good 40min on my boyfriend each time. Shhhh, $50 for a cut and highlights. You can't beat that, especially if your stylist is super duper detail-oriented person with ocd tendencies when cutting hair. Well, I already gave away the secret. I'm torn if I should give out the name of the person who cut my hair as well. I don't speak Chinese, and he barely spoke English. It was still all good. Overall, I'm impressed. Used to be $15, now they raised it to $17. Oh well, that's still a decent price in SF for a straightforward cut of an asian man's hair. Two of the younger guys (and Ming I think) speak a little english; one of them speaks none (Jason?). Would definitely help if you could speak a little Cantonese, although you can get by if you aren't asking for anything complicated. Understanding a little would still help, and lets you know when they comment to each other on how you can't speak. ;) Try to stop on by during a weekday if you can; it gets busy on weekends. read more

I heart this place so much. My brother has been going to Ming for cuts for over 10 years! Ming used to move around from shop to shop and somehow my brother would find him and have him cut his hair and now, he and his friend has finally opened their own shop! I always come to him when I need a trim. I get shampoo, cut, and blowdry for $17. Come on, that's dirt cheap, yeah, their English isn't perfect, but they know what they're doing. All you have to do is speak up a little and show them how you want your hair. Sometimes you have to wait up to an hour if dropping by and if they say an hour, they're not exaggerating. I consider this as my little salon secret in maintaining my pricey haircuts from other salons. read more

This place is alright . I got a really bad haircut and they fixed it up . The person who cut my hair seemed really skilled and seem to really know what he was doing . He was snipping parts of my hair really fast . It was actually fun and interesting watching him layer my hair . For only $10 , my hair ended up looking decent . But I think they cut men's hair better than women's . The stylists are all men . I think you should set up an appointment because when I just walked-in , I had to wait for about an hour before I could get my hair cut . read more

I had high expectations after reading the reviews on yelp. But when I came out of that salon, it was a nightmare. Ming gave me the impression he knew what I wanted and he was very meticulate with his cutting, but had no idea about style... he ended up butchering my bangs and didn't do anything to make up for it except saying "it is shorter so you won't have to come back to see us so often" and my husband made the wrong choice to get his hair cut there too bc he trusted the reviews... the other guy messed his hair too. All he asked for was a trim and thin it a bit out and the asshole gave him a crew cut instead and blamed it on my husband's inability to convey his wishes correctly. If the customers can cut their own style, I am sure that we, the customers would have no need to go to these hair salons... I agreed with the other reviews that Ming was very detailed, unfortunately, they have no taste or style so therefore, they just take into account that you want your hair short or long and that is it. they had no idea what we were talking about when we told them what we wanted and yet didn't ask for confirmation before they started chopping away with their scissors.
