The Milton Wok has been a fixture in Milton/Edgewood for many years and used to have a great reputation for good food. NOT ANYMORE. For the last five years or so, the Milton Wok has been on a slow decline. As you enter you are overwhelmed by the smell of restroom deodorizer, and although smoking has been banned in our state for several years, you still smell more than a decade of old cigarette smoke. Walls, carpets, upholstery and ceiling tiles are in great need of deep cleaning or replacement.
Should you decide you still want to give them a try, you are likely to run into one of the owners young children, or more likely, they will run into you. The first couple booths seem to be designated for the children, but they have been given no boundaries or discipline and have often ended up seating themselves at any booth or floor under a table, whether occupied by patrons or not. If you don't see the children, you will hear them. Very few people dine-in on weeknights now, Friday and Saturday nights might get half full. Just a few years ago, you would have to wait for a table on the weekends. Be sure and be out of there before the singing starts. Luckily the owners wife takes the kids home about that time or the noise of song and screaming children would be deafening.
The food gets worse as time goes on. It is greasy and all tastes the same. You are no longer given the impression of freshly made food from an old family recipe, but instead, reheated standard dishes from the local Chinese restaurant supply truck.
I recently picked up an order to go of several dishes for two people. The Hot & Sour soup was horrible. It tasted like it was from a concentrated mix, only they forgot to add the chicken stock, water or what ever else they should have mixed in. Fried Rice was greasy, over-salted, but otherwise had no flavor. Almond Fried Chicken is one of their best dishes. This night, the chicken was cold in the center; not heated long enough. The gravy, thick and floury. The Moo Goo Gai Pan had a strong metallic taste. The included tea bag however, made a great cup of tea.
Service depends on how busy the dining room is. They have a Caucasian waitress who is very pleasant and works very hard. She is the only waitress, no matter how busy. The owners might bring food to your table if things are really busy, but typically they only interact with you at the cash register. The last time I dined inside the restaurant, a very loud domestic dispute started at the table next to us, instigated by a drunk twenty-something male. When other patrons brought it to the owners attention, he said he wouldn't say anything or call the police, as he wants all customers to be happy. When the boyfriend became physical with the girlfriend and her grandmother in the dining room and then drug the girl to the parking lot, again the owner said he didn't want to become involved because he wanted all customers to be happy. Luckily for the girl, not all of us forgot our cell phones that night.
If you are a drinker or enjoy a good Happy Hour, you will enjoy the bar. The drinks are small, but strong. Can you say bar-flies? I think the lounge is what keeps the doors open. The bar also has a dedicated Karaoke crowd, including some that are tone-deaf. No one is a snob, so you will have fun no matter how well trained your voice. Songs sung tend to tip the scales to the country genre, next 70s/80s rock; very little pop of any decade. read more
