All the fillings were good, but you have to try the Hawaiian filling! It was truly fantastic and had us wishing that's all we'd ordered. * Guava Finger has the same perfect crust and tasty guava jam--I could eat a dozen of these and come back for more. *oink oink* * Carissa really enjoyed their lentil soup. I didn't try it, so I can't comment. The Meh: * I kind of prefer the chunks of meat in Peruvian empanadas to the ground meat in Colombian ones, but that's just a personal preference. Friendly staff. It's not exactly a restaurant like you might expect from the listing/reviews. There's no inside seating and very limited outside. It's basically a bakery-like store that has a wonderful selection of Colombian style empanadas and colclos (so?). They also have some delicious looking flans and a few other items. Finally tried Milohas as they've been on my list for a while and have a lot of great reviews. Oh man, was I disappointed. Ordered two empanadas: Spinach & Cheese and a Chicken & Potato. I wanted to get some desert items but they seemed to have very few things to choose from. I would have asked questions but inside the store was strangely loud and the woman who helped me was a low talker so I couldn't understand anything she was saying to me as it was. The empanadas are pretty large, as are the prices. $17 for the two. At this price point I was glad I decided not to buy more. Each comes with a tiny side of aji green sauce. They could have been more generous here. I found the spinach to be very salty and more breading than filling. The chicken one was a letdown. Chicken was lacking any flavor. For both the pastry was dry. Was only able to eat half of each and threw the rest away. Not really the kind of place you dine in for. You order at the counter and there is limited seating inside (in a way that makes you not want to dine in), and a few seats outside. Plenty of parking in the shopping center lot. This visit and subsequent review makes me feel sad. I want to support these unique, independent eateries but they make it difficult when the quality doesn't meet the high cost. I remember finding this place by accident a couple years ago, when I wasn't even writing reviews yet. Been going here since then. This place is a little gem in a not very busy plaza. I go here for empanadas, for guava fingers, all their baked items, Colombian tamal, Colombian coffee, guanabana juice, ice cream. When I go here I normally go overboard and buy entirely too much stuff that I end up taking home with me. The service is lovely, all of them are super nice and sweet, the food is delicious, and the prices are very fair. We come here often and have always loved the consistency and freshness. It is PRICEY, but love to support local and we go about once every 2-3 months. Always get empanadas and dessert cups, so after tip it's usually $40-$50! Today may have been our last visit. We ordered three empanadas and when we got home one was the wrong kind. I called the store and asked to either come back for the right one or get a refund. The manager called the owner and after a few phone calls and requesting I send a picture, they said no refund. They stated it was because some had been eaten... but that's how you discover it's the wrong one! It was a little boy who always gets ham and cheese, but he got a Hawaiian so they are very similar. He states it tasted funny at first, but I encouraged him to keep trying because he loves them. Then came the pineapple and unfortunately like other picky kids he wouldn't eat it. The staff is great, so this is more for the owner I guess. As someone in food service myself that is not the way to respond, it's cheap. Such a bummer, it was YOUR error and you won't refund $10 to keep a consistent consumer coming back and promoting your business to others. We have recently been trying all of the empanada restaurants in the area and this third one is definitely my favorite. I love the vibe of it. They have a large selection compared to other places. I ended up getting the turkey and cranberry and John got the Hawaiian. But the Hawaiian is the one to get! So good. However, I love a good Hawaiian pizza so take that into consideration. I also got the lentil soup that came with my combo and I loved it. I would have been happy with just the soup. Very tasty. The outer layer was perfectly flaky and crisp, and the filling was hearty and well seasoned. Each empanada comes with a side of aji verde, which is a Colombian green sauce. I stopped by on my way home for a small bite and to pick up some empanadas and desserts to take home. Their empanadas are amazing. I bought the ham and egg, chicken & potato and beef & potato to take home. I also got their famous Milohas dessert. It's my favorite. The young lady helping was so sweet. She packaged all my empanadas and labeled the box with type of empanada in it. She also wrote down instructions on the best way to warm them up at home. Truly a hidden gem Milohas is located it in a spacious plaza with many other shops. I usually shop at the Petco in that plaza since it's near home and after a while I realized Milohas was located in that same plaza as well. Service was prompt and friendly. They're known for their delicious empanadas and it did not disappoint. The empanadas come in a small or large size and the small is pretty big to me already. I ordered their combo 3 which came with a small beef empanada, guava finger pastry, salad, and soup. The beef empanada was paired with the green Aji sauce which added a zesty and herby flavor. This spot had the largest variety of empanadas and the most unique flavors like turkey and cranberry, Hawaiian, and pizza. They of course also had a lot of the more traditional flavors as well as dessert options. I loved that the dough here was more of a flaky puff pastry/croissant-like texture. The food and service used to be really good, but sadly, the quality has been going downhill lately. The food is just okay now cool, not taste good anymore, and portions are low,empanadas have more outside filling like flour, and less ingredients inside, tamales quality ingredients are cheap that do not taste good, and the overall experience is disappointing. There are no bathrooms available for customers and no decent, comfortable area to sit and enjoy your meal. There are only three tables outside, and every time I've been there, they have been dirty. I've had to wipe the table down myself or end up eating in my car. It's unfortunate to see a place that used to be enjoyable decline this much. When we arrived, we stood in the small building for around 7 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. Employees kept walking back and forth without saying anything or offering help. The service was extremely slow and unwelcoming from the start. After we got our food, I went back inside to ask for napkins and extra sauce. Once again, it took a long time to get help. When I finally asked one of the employees for sauce, she gave me a strange look, turned her head, and tossed it onto the table without even asking what kind I wanted or how many I needed. I had to ask another employee because it wasn't even the correct sauce. The food itself was actually really good, which makes this even more disappointing. But the customer service was some of the worst I've experienced, especially when taking family out to enjoy a meal together. Honestly the most overpriced "Colombian" place I've eaten. I've been in NYC, NJ, Miami, Los Angeles, Connecticut and Las Vegas I had never experienced such high inflation on Colombian food as much as this place and trust me I've seen outrageous prices when it comes to Colombian food but this one was just too obvious to stay quiet. When I made a comment to the cashier, I'll give you this, she was a real good employee and defended her bosses by telling me that prices on importation were too high and costly. Mind you I am comparing the prices to the prices I currently experienced in LA . Keeping in mind that the cost of living in San Jose is significantly less than in LA.by 23%. The taste was okay. We ordered the Colombian breakfast, eggs were good and sufficient. The arepa was not good. Coffee was meh. The pandebono was not the best. The pandeyuca was delicious. This is a great spot for Colombian bites. As is the case with most ethnic foods, it's been slightly modified to meet the local market, but I think for the better. The empenada crust is way better. Excellent pastries! For a quick snack, the 2 of us got a single small beef potato empanada and a single guava finger for $10 total. The pastry itself is extremely light, soft, and flaky. The beef potato is nice and hearty, goes really well with their chimichurri sauce. The guava finger was also really tasty. I would definitely come back.
