Milohas (mil hojas) means a thousand layers in Spanish, and one taste of Milohas' pastries will make you understand why they picked that moniker. The Good: * Large shared parking lot * Friendly service * Covered outdoor dining * The crust of the empanadas was buttery, flaky, and delicious. All the fillings were good, but you have to try the Hawaiian filling! It was truly fantastic and had us wishing that's all we'd ordered. * Guava Finger has the same perfect crust and tasty guava jam--I could eat a dozen of these and come back for more. *oink oink* * Carissa really enjoyed their lentil soup. I didn't try it, so I can't comment. The Meh: * I kind of prefer the chunks of meat in Peruvian empanadas to the ground meat in Colombian ones, but that's just a personal preference. Finally tried Milohas as they've been on my list for a while and have a lot of great reviews. Oh man, was I disappointed. Ordered two empanadas: Spinach & Cheese and a Chicken & Potato. I wanted to get some desert items but they seemed to have very few things to choose from. I would have asked questions but inside the store was strangely loud and the woman who helped me was a low talker so I couldn't understand anything she was saying to me as it was. The empanadas are pretty large, as are the prices. $17 for the two. At this price point I was glad I decided not to buy more. Each comes with a tiny side of aji green sauce. They could have been more generous here. I found the spinach to be very salty and more breading than filling. The chicken one was a letdown. Chicken was lacking any flavor. For both the pastry was dry. Was only able to eat half of each and threw the rest away. Not really the kind of place you dine in for. You order at the counter and there is limited seating inside (in a way that makes you not want to dine in), and a few seats outside. Plenty of parking in the shopping center lot. This visit and subsequent review makes me feel sad. I want to support these unique, independent eateries but they make it difficult when the quality doesn't meet the high cost. We have recently been trying all of the empanada restaurants in the area and this third one is definitely my favorite. I love the vibe of it. They have a large selection compared to other places. I ended up getting the turkey and cranberry and John got the Hawaiian. But the Hawaiian is the one to get! So good. However, I love a good Hawaiian pizza so take that into consideration. I also got the lentil soup that came with my combo and I loved it. I would have been happy with just the soup. Very tasty. Just yummy! We got assorted empanadas today from sweet savory. Guava, cheese, beef, and turkey. Two sizes small and large. The small is still shareable and the large for sure good for two people. The love the crust nice and flaky not dried at all. I took it home and popped it in air fryer to warm. There is just so much filling inside. There is no skimping on filling here. I stopped by on my way home for a small bite and to pick up some empanadas and desserts to take home. Their empanadas are amazing. I bought the ham and egg, chicken & potato and beef & potato to take home. I also got their famous Milohas dessert. It's my favorite. The young lady helping was so sweet. She packaged all my empanadas and labeled the box with type of empanada in it. She also wrote down instructions on the best way to warm them up at home. Truly a hidden gem Milohas is located it in a spacious plaza with many other shops. I usually shop at the Petco in that plaza since it's near home and after a while I realized Milohas was located in that same plaza as well. Service was prompt and friendly. I took my mom, my girlfriend, and her mom out of town to try this place because I had been wanting to come here for a while. Unfortunately, the customer service completely ruined the experience. When we arrived, we stood in the small building for around 7 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. Employees kept walking back and forth without saying anything or offering help. The service was extremely slow and unwelcoming from the start. After we got our food, I went back inside to ask for napkins and extra sauce. Once again, it took a long time to get help. When I finally asked one of the employees for sauce, she gave me a strange look, turned her head, and tossed it onto the table without even asking what kind I wanted or how many I needed. I had to ask another employee because it wasn't even the correct sauce. The food itself was actually really good, which makes this even more disappointing. But the customer service was some of the worst I've experienced, especially when taking family out to enjoy a meal together. Honestly the most overpriced "Colombian" place I've eaten. I've been in NYC, NJ, Miami, Los Angeles, Connecticut and Las Vegas I had never experienced such high inflation on Colombian food as much as this place and trust me I've seen outrageous prices when it comes to Colombian food but this one was just too obvious to stay quiet. When I made a comment to the cashier, I'll give you this, she was a real good employee and defended her bosses by telling me that prices on importation were too high and costly. Mind you I am comparing the prices to the prices I currently experienced in LA . Keeping in mind that the cost of living in San Jose is significantly less than in LA.by 23%. The taste was okay. The first thing I got was their pan de bono de guava and their potato and chicken empanada. The pan de bono was just about average, I don't think it was the best. The empanada was pretty good flakey and buttery but the filling was a little dry. Overall this place is pretty meh.
