This review is not going to be good, but want to say that the staff we encountered seemed to truly care and they really want to help the animals. That being said, this place is a mess. Many of the cats are within too close proximity of the dogs. Much of the staff seemed confused about what was going on. We adopted a cat. When we met our cat we were told he had a cold. He was lethargic and had a runny nose. Other than that we were told he was fine. We thought. Ok, this place is like a torture camp if you're a cat (too close to barking dogs) and he will probably come around once we get home and he can rest and recover. Within the first week we had to take him to our vet twice. He had numerous health issues. Our vet told us the shelter should not have nutured and given him 3 vaccines in one session, or such a short time frame. This is way too stressful. Of course, we can't say this is 100% the cause, but it is possible. Our previous cat was adopted through a different shelter in Berkeley. They were so professional. The cat came with a full physical and detailed health report. Milo only provided a list of procedures and vaccines. No blood work or anything. If you choose to use Milo just be very careful. Ask lots of questions about the animal's health history. Get a full report/physical. And, if you work at Milo and you read this you can do a better job of structuring your facility so that the cats and dogs are not so close to each other. p.s. our cat is alive but we are still dealing with health issues with him. We love him and he is so cute. Fingers crossed. read more

I have been volunteering with Milo - and to see the care, commitment and dedication of all the volunteers and staff is amazing! And special thanks to Lynn and Carol for making it happen. At the end of the day, volunteers go home and enjoy their day. Lynne and Carol go home to take care of the dogs that need special care and they are also foster. Lynne's home usually has at least 6-10 dogs and a mama with litter. The animals that are not adopted are well taken care of and their medical is also part of the care. Thank you Milo! read more

Today we adopted our third dog from Milo and each time the process has been smooth and easy. The volunteers are all kind and knowledgeable. We have been fortunate to find 3 amazing animals here and I encourage you to check out their website and Point Richmond location when you're searching for your next family member! read more

Milo Foundation - Our new baby! - Pet Adoption Near Me - Point Richmond, California

Quick turn around from application to having my new kitten at home. Foster was great and Milo staff seem very organized.

We got our first dog from the Milo Foundation. She did have kennel cough but that's very common in shelter settings. Milo was so nice, they gave me all her meds for free and even let us bring her back to the rescue a few days (they kept her with them in the office, away from other animals) because we had to work and didn't want to leave her sick alone at home. My mom had to relinquish a dog that bit a kid (minor bite) and they took him and found him a kid free home with a senior citizen. We fostered a dog through Milo that needed ACL surgery and Milo got him great care, covered all his needs including food and helped us set up adoption opportunities for him. He now has a great home with a family of four, living his best life. Our current dog came to Milo with only one eye and is the most incredible sweetheart. None of these animals would have had a chance at survival if Milo had not stepped up and rescued them. They take as many dogs as they can and while that may make the place seem chaotic compared to a more selective rescue agency, Milo is going good and important work and I'm proud to have Milo dogs in my home. read more

Staff here truly loves animals and are slammed by requests to take so many dogs. They do their best and it's amazing how many they save. Don't walk in expecting trained customer service/sales people but instead, people who've made it their mission to rescue animals and want what's best for them. Start here if you're looking for a new best friend. There are so many sweet dogs of all ages, sizes and personalities... it's too bad we can't adopt anymore!! read more

We had a mostly positive experience at Milo. We submitted an application online and went in person with a special dog in mind a few days later. We left with our pup that same day and we absolutely love her! There were a couple of hiccups that leave me giving this experience 4 starts instead of 5. Firstly, we received some contradicting information from the vet there and the other staff about vaccinations and provided services. Secondly, our pup was about 10 weeks when we adopted her and Milo spayed her via Snip Bus at 11 weeks. Upon doing some of our own research we realized there could be possible ramifications of having her spayed so young. We wish the staff had discussed this with us prior to spaying her- but what's done is done. I've read through the 1 and 2 star reviews mentioning the lack of organization and steep prices and I have a few thoughts. Milo Foundation is a non-profit. I've worked at several in the past and the lack of funds inevitably leads to some disorganization and chaos. That's the nature of non-profits. So I don't fault Milo for being noisy, hectic, etc. They're doing their best. Also, they provide vaccines, meds, and neutering/spay services as well as having to pay for overhead, salaries, food, equipment, etc. It makes sense that the adoption fees are hundreds of dollars. Again, they're doing their best. All in all, we are quite pleased and would recommend Milo to our friends and family. read more

Milo is such a wonderful organization! We adopted our amazing pup Nova from Milo 5 years ago, and I can't imagine not having her as a member of our family. It's just unthinkable that she was in a kill-shelter before Milo rescued her. Milo let us wonder around the shelter and meet all the dogs without any pressure at all. Then we got to foster Nova before we committed to adoption, which was a perfect transition for us. We've fostered other dogs from Milo in the years since, and it's been such a rewarding experience. Milo makes fostering so easy! I've met so many happy Milo adopters at our local dog parks, and they all have great experiences to share. Thank you Milo! read more

Milo Foundation - Pet Adoption Near Me - Point Richmond, California

This review is very long overdue. I had a horrible experience here and wouldn't want anyone else to go through what we had went through. My husband and I adopted a dog from the Milo Foundation at the end of March. She came to us extremely sick. We should have known when we first walked in to the place it smelled horribly of urine and feces. There were so many dogs there that it seemed overcrowded. We saw a dog we liked and asked a staff member about her and they asked us if we filled out an application and once we said yes she just handed us a leash so we could take her out which is quite odd since they didn't even check if we really filled out an application or not. We took the dog we were interested out and clearly she had never been socialized before as she just kinda shut down and would barely walk and her fur was all matted and she was so dirty. They could have at least gave her a bath and groomed her but they did none of that because she looked terrible. My husband and I decided to adopt her so she can get out of this terrible place that was so over overcrowded with dogs as we liked her and were willing to take the time to train her. Btw. Their adoption fee of $700 are extremely high for a dog that has not been socialized or cared for. She wasn't even spayed and she has not had all her shots yet and when you ask a staff member about her they know nothing. We finally take her home and realized she was very lethargic and had mucous coming out of her nose and was coughing. We tried to contact the emergency number they give you but no response. I even emailed them and no response. My husband tried calling them and no answer until he blocked his number and then someone answered immediately which means they were screening the calls. Should have looked at all the other terrible reviews and people adopting sick animals before adopting from here. When my husband finally got a hold of them they said she probably has kennel cough but we think she might have had pneumonia as she was so sick and we had to go pick up meds from them (we live in San Francisco and needed to drive all they way out to Richmond to get the meds from them which is very inconvenient) after giving her meds for a couple days she was still so sick and lethargic and bedridden and not eating, with all this snot coming out of her nose so we contacted the Milo Foundation again and of course they don't answer until we block our number. When they answered they told us to come back again to their Richmond facility and they will provide more meds for her so at this point we need to drive out there again. We have spent about $800 to adopt her and she's been so sick and we were just shoving multiple pills down her throat and making her miserable at the same time. How are you supposed to bond with a dog that is so sick and won't eat, drink or move. It was literally one of my worst weeks ever and we felt so bad and so sad for her that we were thinking of returning her because we didn't want her to die in our care but we just couldn't give her back to the Milo foundation cause they are just awful there and clearly didn't care for her well being. Finally after over a week she finally got better and had some life in her and we started to bond with her and then next thing you know she had worms in her poop and we called Milo again and they said that she must have gotten it with us and not at their facility so we need to figure it out yourselves. So we had to pay out of our pockets to see the vet and get her meds to get rid of the worms. Milo foundation is literally adopting out sick dogs with an extremely high cost which means their doing it for profit considering our dog came to us extremely matted, dirty and sick. How can you charge so much for an animal that has not been cared for. They get their dogs from a shelter out in Bakersfield is what it looks like. If your going to adopt a dog out make sure you do a health check and give the dogs all their vaccines and maybe spay them before putting them out for adoption cause we've had to drive to the Milo Foundation about 5 times to get all these things done which is very inconvenient. This place should be reported and not be in business because they're horrible. They should not be considered a rescue as they're just selling sick animals to people who are searching for a companion. There are many other rescues out there so do yourself a favor and do not choose or support the Milo foundation. We love our baby girl and are extremely happy she's now healthy and with us but no thanks to the Milo foundation for all the stress, money and time. read more

The people who volunteer and staff at the Milo Foundation are all amazing. I adopted the best dog I've ever had from them, and they had fostered him with an amazing family that I'm now friends with. They did a great job training him and taking good care of him while they tried to find him at home. This was a six month old German shepherd, who is incredibly loving and well-trained for a dog who's been in foster care for so long. I highly recommend adopting through this foundation. I believe they take the time and care to invest in the animal and truly find a good home and a good fit for each animal. read more

2 months ago I adopted Lulu from Milo. She had been fostered with a family with lots of dogs. The fosterer gave me lots of tips that proved completely true about her personality, likes and dislikes, potential issues with separation anxiety, house training and potential flight risk. And this dog is amazing, incredibly sweet, gentle, very well socialized and we LOVE her! She has proved a very quick learner. But knowing ahead of time, for example, that she could and would probably jump our very high fence (which we tested and found true) was incredibly helpful and made the adjustment process much easier. Maybe not all fosterers are so great but the one who gave us Lulu prepared us extremely well. So THANK YOU to Milo Foundation and the fosterer for giving us Lulu! read more

I have seen people complaining about how some pets are housed. Milo does not kill pets. If they are accepting more pets than are being adopted, what do you expect may happen? I had my dog examined by 3 vets. I took precautions due to any shelters housing conditions. It's a shelter. If a pet looks unhappy or you believe needs more space, ya may want to adopt it to help. This is not a zoo. I like the variety of pets Milo has housed in one area. I read someone express a smell they disliked with a pet they adopted. Have the pet checked out and wash it. I have read many complaints regarding potential owners being turned away. That needs to be addressed. Can't assume people interested may not have an ideal environment. A pet is better off in a home regardless. My dogs life has changed. He is happy. I am actually grateful he had a place to stay at Milo instead of complaining. He could have been on the street or dead. I paid $600. I believe that covered neutering through a contracted hospital. Some adoptions are $350 or of the like, but they had far less pets. I will adopt a pet in the future from here. Some replies are ridiculous. You are not visiting a museum. If you like a pet; adopt it & further take care of it. That pet is better off having a chance than dead. read more

Hi! I just had to take a minute to let you know how happy my family and I are with the newest member of our family, Maverick! Maverick (aka Little Ricky) is an 8 week old lab/Shepard mix puppy who was brought in to the shelter with his litter mates. My family was looking to adopt a puppy and I was amazed to see a post on Facebook from one of the volunteers, Allison Skidgel, about this litter that was brought in. I immediately reached out to Marianne Parsons to let her know of our sincerest interest in adopting one of these little guys. Marianne seriously went out of her way to communicate with me about the adoption process and the possibility of our having a meet and greet with one of the pups. She always answered my questions on Messenger quickly and her knowledge of the adoption process was appreciated. She was seriously such a gem! Mandy, the foster who had Little Ricky, was so kind and accommodating. She really knew Ricky well and took such good care of him and his brother while fostering. I wouldn't have this sweet boy today if it wasn't for these amazing volunteers at Milo! Thank you, thank you, thank you! read more

Milo foundation advertises via Facebook and a website. They have a list of animals that are available for adoption and swem like a great place. My fiance and I recently lost 2 of our dogs, one to old age at 18.5 years old and another to cancer at 11.5 years old. We have been searching for new companions for our 4 year old Jack Russell and on their site found a bonded Jack Russell and Min Pin that looked to be perfect for our family. We live on 1/3 of an acre, fully fenced and I work from home. What better life for a pet than to have someone home at all times. We put in applications for the dogs but we're denied since we do not live in California. Nowhere on the website, Facebook or anywhere else does it state that the animals are only available to California residents. I enquired about this policy and was told they want to keep the animals close so if they need medical attention or need to be returned. When I asked if they only adopt to Northern California, ai got a vague answer. I live 4 hours away, not across the country but because it is a different state, we are not allowed to adopt. That tells me they really don't want to find the best homes, only California homes, which is not fair to the animals. If someone is willing to drive to get them, then why not let them. They falsely advertise on their web page since it is never stated that out of state adoptions are not allowed. Their adoption application has all the states on it so that people find the perfect companion and then are denied. They need to correct their advertising and remove all stated but California from their adoption application. read more

I've had the privilege of volunteering here for the past few years, and it has been such a rewarding experience. I've learned so much and have been able to help get dogs adopted, especially breeds like Pittys! which are often harder to place in homes. Pit Bulls are my favorite, and I've grown especially close to them, making amazing connections. The staff here truly care about the animals, treating them with so much love. Every dog here deserves a loving home, and it's been inspiring to be part of their journey toward adoption. We had a heartbreaking and expensive experience adopting a puppy from Milo. He lived only 9 months due to 2 congenital issues. We spent almost $10k in 9 months for adoption fees then the care he needed to be seen by vet specialists and in an effort to save him from renal failure. We are heartbroken having lost our sweet boy far too soon. Be wary. Our experience indicates that they don't have the proper vet oversight in the rescue, screening and adoption process. read more

We just adopted our rescue girl Ruby from Milo. We made the drive to the Willits area to meet her. I can't say enough about how good our Milo experience has been. The staff are caring, warm, and knowledgeable. Amy helped us understand our pup's background and temperament, then made relaxed introductions with us and our new family member. The staff had done lots of work to socialize this little rescue girl. Their hard work made the transition to our home relatively easy. Be sure to look at a paper map if you're going to head up. Latest update. Our dog spent the whole day today with our vet. They found infectious Pneumonia, and our vet stayed the only way it could have been contracted was at the shelter. Milo has not responded to a single email I sent today, and we ended up with just over $3000 in vet bills to ensure our dog's health. Milo fails to acknowledge the health concerns in their facility by not replying to my emails. I will call this weekend to make sure they are aware this highly contagious virus is in their shelter. Hopefully they do something about it so no animals fall severely ill. Our experience with our dog shows they are not very closely watching the health of the animals there, so I fear there may be lives at risk currently. read more

The staff was helpful and very friendly. We were impressed by this great organization that finds homes for wonderful pets. Staff and Vets alike are very nice and love the animals there. They are cared for like their own. While we were there we watched how wonderfully the animals were matched with prospective families before allowing them to leave. The fits were perfect. Funny thing is we met Carol the manager while making the donation and she recognized me from years ago when she managed another business. I fostered for Milo in 2022. They provided nothing, gave no support, and resisted my efforts to get the foster dog the health care he needed. When I pushed to get the necessary dental care - the animal was in pain and the extractions needed extensive - they insisted I meet with the directer, who prodded the dog in the snout with a tongue depresser until he growled. As he opened his mouth to growl she declared 'I've seen his teeth and they are fine!' A couple of months later he was attacked by a large dog. I brought him in to Milo for examination and the vet tech requested dental care for him. He needed 13 extractions! Milo wanted to charge $450 for this dog's adoption (rat terrier mix) and would have ignored his need for $1300 worth or dental care. This is a warehousing enterprise. They take in as many dogs as they can and move them through without appropriate care. read more

I have adopted three dogs over the years from Milo Foundation and I have always found the staff and Lynne Tingle to be helpful and the process has always been straightforward and easy. Our third adoption in Sept. '24 was our most fun! We wanted to see a dog at the sanctuary up in Willits. A long but lovely ride to the sanctuary found us in a lovely, forested area that was full of wonderful people. We cooridinated with Amy, the Adoption Manager and met her there to show us the dog we were looking at. When that one didnt work for our other dog, she brought a couple more and it was love at first sight. Amy and one other volunteer had carefully and lovingly brought her out of her shut down shell so she could interact with us. Because of them we have a very sweet Tess. I can't say enough how much I appreciate all of their hard work over the years so that I can have such wonderful loves in my life. read more

I applied to meet one of their cats I'd found on pet finder. After my application was accepted I got an email from Liz on Nov 21st that he was located at their other location in Willits and she connected me with their staff. Liz was very helpful and communicative. I called the Willits location and emailed back and forth with them about this cat. His profile said he was shy and a bit slow to warm up but would do well with a patient owner. I was so excited to meet him, my brother and I drove 2.5hrs. About halfway thru the drive I got a call that they "weren't able to grab him" and they'd been trying all morning. Turns out he's actually pretty feral, like most of their Willits location cats, and I should check out their other location instead. I was pretty shocked. Granted, after looking more closely at their Willits website it does state clearly that these cats are more comfortable with other cats than humans (I admit that's on me for not looking at the website closely enough). But then why list him on petfinder as adoptable and accept an application from someone living in a 1bed apartment? Why not make that clear to me in the weeks that we had been communicating, and wait till an hour before our appointment to tell me that? So I was disappointed but just let it go. I know shit happens, miscommunications happen. My brother and I turned around and headed to their other location in Richmond just to look, and I called ahead just so we didn't waste our time again. It definitely felt a bit disjointed, disorganized there. Just didn't seem super clean or spacious for the cats. I visited with some of the cats and bonded with an older guy in particular. I heard about some of his health issues from a young volunteer there who was very knowledgeable. It was their first day so I didn't expect them to know everything about these cats. They told me he had crystals in his urine but it sounded like it was manageable with the right food. Another volunteer said he had some teeth removed. He was very skinny but they said that's partly because they couldn't feed him after 7p I think, and he'd eat better if he were adopted. They also told me the Willits location is basically for cats who can't really be adopted and are basically living out their lives there. It felt like they were definitely encouraging me to adopt him, whichI understand. I told them I'd think about adopting him but needed some time to research his health issues and make sure I could take that on. I then contacted them thru their website and asked for a list of his medical issues so I could research, explained that my application was already accepted for another cat so it should be in their system. No response, so I planned on visiting him today to get a rundown of his issues in person. I called them to make sure this was ok and they told me that he's actually unadoptable because his medical issues are so bad and they're not sure how long he'll make it. That was it. So I'm pretty done with the lack of communication here. I don't like giving bad reviews esp to a small place like this but I think people should be cautious adopting here. I'm sure their heart is in the right place but I think they really need to get their stuff together. I think the staff need to get on the same page. I think they should take the listings for cats at the Willits location off petfinder, or at least warn people who have applied that the cats are basically feral. Listen to the reviews, you might have a great experience like some or you might get screwed over. Be careful getting attached to animals here. Also: apparently they list the ages of cats as way younger than they actually are. I don't know if this is common, I know they want older cats to get adopted, but just thought you should know. read more

AWESOME FOSTER. High praise for the foster of our adopted dog through Milo. She was wonderful, kind and the support services from shelter volunteers were also responsive post-adoption. I'm OK with the adoption fee because Milo has both a shelter and sanctuary to save dogs from public shelters; that does require funding different from foster-only programs. Many thanks and kudos to Milo for this work. I support it. 2 comments as a caution: (1) LIMITS TO AVAILABILITY OF DOG. Unless you are retired and live by yourself, getting to meet the dog located at shelter, is difficult due to limited shelter hours during the week & the requirement that "all household members must be present." If you have children in school...you work full time.... you get my point. That's just their rules. I don't feel a need to change it, but I purposely avoided any dog located at the shelter. I was only going to deal with a foster bc coordinating schedules for 4 different people and then driving 30 minutes on the chance that the dog will still be there doesn't work. No way was I going to let my children walk around a shelter and emotionally make a decision either. Adopting needs to be in a calm thoughtful environment, especially if rescue require kids to be there. (2) MICROCHIP ISSUES. Be aware that you can register your microchip from Milo with any vendor of your choosing, such as Home Again, AKC Unite etc. I was contacted by 24PetWatch to register my new adopted dog and had a bad experience with one of their telemarketers. But that is for a separate review; just wanted pet parents to be aware of their choice after adoption! read more

1 cat and one dog... Milo used to be in San Rafael and we got our black cat from there many many years ago. He is alive and well today and it's thanks to Milo's efforts for letting us adopt him and match best with us. In September of 2019 we adopted a beautiful husky name Brooke, she has been with us since and I can't imagine my life without her. She was for a while my Service Dog in Training but as my life got better and I got help. Things became so much better and her as my partner in crime too life became more enjoyable. Thanks to Milo we were able to temporarily foster her, we later learned there was a line to adopt her. We knew we couldn't let this quirky silly goofy husky girl go. She made her spot in our family thanks to Denise and all the people at the Milo foundation who took care of her. She has such a sad story before us but Milo helped make her life better. I love Brookie so much and I will forever be greatful to the Milo foundation for letting us test the waters with our forever fur baby... 3 years later I am engaged and living my best life with her and I hope she feels like she is the princess of every doggy's dreams. I looked for a puppy or dog to adopt for the last six months. Friends recommended Milo foundation. The volunteers and staff are very dedicated. They take very good care of the animals that they rescue. The process for adopting was through one of their foster homes. I would say, be persistent and check out their website regularly. The puppy I brought home had seen some hard times and was nicely cared for in the foster home. She is healthy and has a friendly temperament. The remaining vaccines and spaying is included in the adoption fee. This isn't always the case with the other organizations I spoke with. read more
