Facing a very complicated situation to find a no kill shelter or new home for my grandparents' dog. I appreciate Nicole giving me a thoughtful response as well as suggestions which I have already done. However, I noticed this part of an email from a woman named Raquel. I don't know if I was meant to see it but it made me very upset. To Raquel, please know that this anxious cattle dog is the sweetest girl despite her behavior. She will love on you, follow you like a shadow, and bring you so much joy. If I could take her, then I would. I appreciate that you still took a chance to ask but for you to only highlight her as an anxious dog, you make her seem like a burden. One of the missions of the foundation is to "rehabilitate dogs and cats". I even mentioned that she may have slight anxiety and why I think so, meaning she is not 100% crippled by anxiety. I hope you are more compassionate with your words like Nicole was. It has been 6 months since adopted our sweet dog from the Willits location of the Milo Foundation, and we are so grateful he's a part of our family every day. Two dogs from petfinder.com caught our eye, and Amy (the manager at the Willits location) was very communicative over the week it took for us to schedule a visit up there from our home in Oakland. When we arrived, the staff had both dogs out and ready to meet us, including one who was just neutered a few days prior. We mentioned that we dogsit big dogs often, and the staff kindly brought out another big dog so we could see how the two dogs interacted. They let us spend as much time with each dog as we wanted, including walks on a leash around the property. We loved both dogs so much, and the staff gave us a lot of space to decide which one we could bring home. Once we picked our boy Palomo, Amy shared the medical records they had available (including 3 recent vaccines). His adoption fee was $650, which included a week of the food he was already eating and 5 months of Simparica Trio. We immediately signed him up for Healthy Paws insurance when we got home and scheduled him for a check-up with our local vet. His check-up results came back normal except with some antibodies to ticks, which he may have been exposed to at some point in his life. We paid our vet for an urgent test ($350) to confirm that he was negative and 100% healthy! He did require a full dental cleaning, which we expected given how many animals the foundation has to look after. We've stayed in touch with Amy, who shared that the other dog we loved found a home shortly after we visited. It's clear that the Willits staff love these animals so much. We adopted our sweet Great Pyrenees Buddy (formerly Ike) from the Milo Sanctuary in Willits last month. Amy and all the staff are amazing and truly care about placing their animals with the right family. We brought our two daughters and two Golden Retrievers to meet Ike. We applied to adopt a Great Pyrenees from The Milo Foundation and were very disappointed with how the process was handled. After filling out the application, they made quick judgments about us and denied us the opportunity to even meet the dog. We live on a small farm and were hoping to see if he would be a good fit for our family and lifestyle. On the application, we indicated he would be both indoor and outdoor appropriate for his breed but Milo immediately said he should be "more indoors around us" and shut down the process without asking us a single follow-up question. Great Pyrenees are working dogs bred to guard livestock, and we are able to provide him a safe, loving home with the balance of indoor family time and outdoor work he thrives on. Instead, Milo dismissed us outright. Their motto is "no breeding," but experiences like this only discourage people from rescuing. I wanted to do the right thing and adopt, but this made me feel like going to a responsible breeder would be the only way to provide a dog with the life they're meant for. Our Family Dog Was Taken From Us During a Health Crisis -- Milo Misled Us To anyone reading this: please continue to adopt -- never buy -- but do so from rescues that act with compassion, integrity, and transparency. Sadly, Milo Foundation showed none of those! During a time of medical crisis, Milo took our dog -- a beloved member of our family -- and misled us through every step. Our children weren't even given the chance to say goodbye. We adopted Latte over a year ago. She was part of our lives every day -- holidays, school walks, hikes, church, birthday parties, and even had her own birthday cake. My kids adored her. She was loved, well-socialized, and happy. Then I had a serious health emergency and was told to go the ER. My husband, overwhelmed and scared, called Milo for guidance. Nicole Bonfilio told him to fill out a "foster" form to begin rehoming. At no point was it clearly explained this would transfer legal ownership of our dog. This same man brushed her teeth and coat every three days and ran with her daily, must have been heart broken. Two weeks later, as my health stabilized & diagnosed, we contacted Milo and asked to stop the rehoming process. Latte remained in our care and received the same love and daily care. We explained the duress, apologized, and asked to keep our dog. Instead of empathy, Nicole told us: "This is our property now. I can send someone to your house today to take her." When I explained I wasn't part of the decision, she said: "Then maybe there's something wrong with your marriage, and your dog shouldn't be there." And: "You're just doing this for the kids. I don't have kids... I only care about our dog." I was stunned. I asked to speak to someone else -- the founder. Nicole claimed she didn't have that contact and gave a general email (which bounced). I eventually found another address and sent a detailed, heartfelt letter. The response? "The board has reviewed your case. Someone better than you is adopting her tomorrow." Nicole told us that the kids didn't need to say goodbye-- that if it didn't work out, we could "take her right home." We believed her and spared our kids that pain. An adopter interested ("K"), who was an angel &supportive when my husband explained our crisis & told her that we didn't want to lose her We arrived at Milo the next day, hoping to talk but no adopter was there. Nicole said they coming in an hour and insisted we leave Latte despite my begging and fear of Latte being in the shelter. She promised:"She'll only be in the kennel for an hour." But Latte remained in that kennel -- the same one we rescued her from -- for a week! It destroyed our heart. We also learned K had not been contacted by Milo at all before review of our case! K confirmed this directly and they only talked to Nicole because they themselves went to Milo to plead on our behalf. That's when Nicole warned them: "Either you take the dog, or we'll give her to someone else. Don't talk to the family or you'll be blacklisted." We realized Nicole had no confirmed adopter lined up when she forced us to return our dog. The "board decision," the urgency, the claim someone was coming -- all of it appeared fabricated. When we confronted her again that day at the rescue, her only reply was: "The dog is Milo's property now." When we explained we didn't understand the legal implication of forms signed under duress, she told us -- in front of two witnesses at the desk: "Oh well, then I'll just change the forms." "How can someone be so mean?" We cry often. We still sleep with her chew toys. We did not give her up. She was taken!. This review isn't out of anger. It's grief. We trusted Milo. We adopted the sweetest dog from Milo Foundation today! Milo Foundation staff/volunteers were wonderful. They quickly reviewed and approved our application, reaching out to discuss which dog would be the best match. Once we arrived they took time to let us meet each of the dogs we were interested in. Even though the facility was really busy with lots of interested adopters, they did not rush us at all and let us have a lot of time to do meet and greets with the prospective dogs, our children and our own dogs that we brought to make sure everyone got along well. They walked through all the paperwork, neutering plan, and medications and put everything into a helpful folder for us to take home. We have since received a direct message from the founder, Lynne Tingle, stating that our adoption was blocked not because of any concern for Reeces' wellbeing, but because we spoke publicly about the experience: "Well given your wife's news outlet blitz calling her a surrendered dog, and other falsehoods, it is not likely we will choose you as adopters." We had a wonderful experience with fostering and then adopting our new dog, Miko! He was Woody at Milo's. The kids have named him Miko. Miko is a lover, not a fighter. He wants to cuddle and leans in for hugs all the time. He also never barks. We had him start on obedience classes this last Saturday. When we went to Milo Foundation, we knew we needed a dog that would be good around a cat, good with kids, and even special needs kids. I talked with a staff person when we went in and she provided information on the process, fostering first, and then we got to look at the dogs, walking a few. After fostering for a week, we decided to adopt! Miko is an awesome addition to our family. I highly recommend going to Milo Foundation to adopt. This organization and the people who staff it, many of them are volunteers, are absolutely fantastic. They are a non-profit organization. That means they do not make a profit. Adoption fees and donations are used to take care of the precious little animals. Yes, they get some of the animals from shelters. They take them so they are not put to death. The ones not adopted are moved to their sanctuary in Willits. When we arrived at the location, the young staff members were friendly and courteous. Their concern may be more for the animals than the two-legged individuals who can take care of themselves. We explained we wanted to look at the cats as we just recently lost ours due to old age. We could feel real concern on their part, and they allowed us to look at our own pace. Once we selected this little gal, Amanda took care of all of the paperwork for us and explained everything. She was courteous, professional, friendly, and competent. What more could you expect. We were more than happy to pay the adoption fee and added on a donation We are pretty happy this new member of our family did not have to be put down because nobody would bother to take the time to see her go to a home who is happy to have her. I have been trying to adopt a rescue since October and finally brought home an adopted dog on February 23. During this time I have interacted with the county animal shelter and 4 different rescue organizations in regards to many available dogs. It has been a frustrating experience for a variety of reasons, but I am delighted to finally have a new addition to my home. The folks at Milo Foundation are very experienced and are clearly committed to the dogs in their care. The staff and volunteers I met or spoke with want the best for the animals and it shows in their rescue activities, social media posts, and adoption events. The one aspect that has been so frustrating is the poor communication with me as a prospective adopter. None of my emails to the "contact us" site were answered, many attempts to reach them by phone were unsuccessful because the phone was not answered, and once I was told that a dog I wanted to meet had already been adopted. He continued to appear on the website as being available for over two weeks. But otherwise, when my phone call was answered, the staff member was very helpful and familiar with details about the dog I was asking about. Despite my criticism, I need to say that there is a brand new operations manager who is aware of the need to tighten protocols and who is amazingly responsive and committed to improving their processes. Given their dedication to the animals in their care, I recommend that prospective adopters be patient, call again if the phone is not answered, and give them a chance. I adopted a darling dog from them who clearly received excellent care from both the Milo staff and his foster. read more

This place is a horror story, and I believe my first ever one star review, simply do not get a pet from here. They will sell you insurance on the claim that can be used on anything from the day you take home the pet. This is a lie, first you find out the dog you took home has a major respiratory illness that you weren't told about. You will think ok I'm glad I bought the insurance. You call the provided emergency hotline, once, twice with no response so you take your pet to the vet because it is having a hard time breathing. Once you finally get ahold of the Milo Foundation and explain what is going on the director will tell you that they will cover anything the insurance doesn't cover. At that point you're feeling pretty good despite having to explain to your 4 year old that just got her first dog that her dog might die. Three days and $8K of vet bills later your dog gets to come home and that's when things start to get bad. The MetLife they sold you will decline your claim because it was 'preexisting', so much for the insurance being good right away at least Milo will cover the bills right? You guessed it, the director will again say on the phone, after 5 attempts to get ahold of her, that they will pay but after providing the insurance denial vet bills and all information they requested you hear nothing for a week so you call again. 'Oh sorry I'll review tonight', another week goes by so you contact them again. Then the final shoe drops "It's too much we're nothing to pay". Expect a sick animal, insurance not worth the paper it's printed on, and the foundation to do nothing for you in the end. I wouldn't recommend them to the boss I hated when I was 22. Many better options, don't live the stress that this place causes. read more

He is the only reason i give this place 5stars. 1.5/5 for the staff. They were friendly but definitely need to get it together. They were confused about how many shots he was supposed to take and long story short we came back an extra visit for no reason and could have taken him on walks all along.. 0/5 for the actual shelter/facility. Some of the dogs were put into cages that were so small they couldn't turn. All of the cages were different sizes and looked like they were made of scraps from a junkyard. we could have gone to ARF in Walnut Creek which is much nicer and has some adoption fees paid for, already neutered and even adoption fees that aren't paid is much cheaper than the $500 we paid here. This review is very long overdue. I had a horrible experience here and wouldn't want anyone else to go through what we had went through. My husband and I adopted a dog from the Milo Foundation at the end of March. She came to us extremely sick. We should have known when we first walked in to the place it smelled horribly of urine and feces. There were so many dogs there that it seemed overcrowded. We saw a dog we liked and asked a staff member about her and they asked us if we filled out an application and once we said yes she just handed us a leash so we could take her out which is quite odd since they didn't even check if we really filled out an application or not. We took the dog we were interested out and clearly she had never been socialized before as she just kinda shut down and would barely walk and her fur was all matted and she was so dirty. They could have at least gave her a bath and groomed her but they did none of that because she looked terrible. My husband and I decided to adopt her so she can get out of this terrible place that was so over overcrowded with dogs as we liked her and were willing to take the time to train her. Btw. Their adoption fee of $700 are extremely high for a dog that has not been socialized or cared for. She wasn't even spayed and she has not had all her shots yet and when you ask a staff member about her they know nothing. We finally take her home and realized she was very lethargic and had mucous coming out of her nose and was coughing. We tried to contact the emergency number they give you but no response. I even emailed them and no response. My husband tried calling them and no answer until he blocked his number and then someone answered immediately which means they were screening the calls. Should have looked at all the other terrible reviews and people adopting sick animals before adopting from here. When my husband finally got a hold of them they said she probably has kennel cough but we think she might have had pneumonia as she was so sick and we had to go pick up meds from them (we live in San Francisco and needed to drive all they way out to Richmond to get the meds from them which is very inconvenient) after giving her meds for a couple days she was still so sick and lethargic and bedridden and not eating, with all this snot coming out of her nose so we contacted the Milo Foundation again and of course they don't answer until we block our number. When they answered they told us to come back again to their Richmond facility and they will provide more meds for her so at this point we need to drive out there again. We have spent about $800 to adopt her and she's been so sick and we were just shoving multiple pills down her throat and making her miserable at the same time. How are you supposed to bond with a dog that is so sick and won't eat, drink or move. It was literally one of my worst weeks ever and we felt so bad and so sad for her that we were thinking of returning her because we didn't want her to die in our care but we just couldn't give her back to the Milo foundation cause they are just awful there and clearly didn't care for her well being. Finally after over a week she finally got better and had some life in her and we started to bond with her and then next thing you know she had worms in her poop and we called Milo again and they said that she must have gotten it with us and not at their facility so we need to figure it out yourselves. So we had to pay out of our pockets to see the vet and get her meds to get rid of the worms. Milo foundation is literally adopting out sick dogs with an extremely high cost which means their doing it for profit considering our dog came to us extremely matted, dirty and sick. How can you charge so much for an animal that has not been cared for. They get their dogs from a shelter out in Bakersfield is what it looks like. If your going to adopt a dog out make sure you do a health check and give the dogs all their vaccines and maybe spay them before putting them out for adoption cause we've had to drive to the Milo Foundation about 5 times to get all these things done which is very inconvenient. This place should be reported and not be in business because they're horrible. They should not be considered a rescue as they're just selling sick animals to people who are searching for a companion. There are many other rescues out there so do yourself a favor and do not choose or support the Milo foundation. We love our baby girl and are extremely happy she's now healthy and with us but no thanks to the Milo foundation for all the stress, money and time. read more
