Great experience with a couple of lovely friends at this Amish Menonite restaurant that serves southern comfort from another world They change the menu daily and today they didn't have the fried pork chops the baked pork was good too, tender and fully cooked, service was quick and with a smile. We drove just over 70 miles with high expectations because My brother-in-law told me it was terrible. So we knew for sure it had to be great. He was just trying to keep us away from the good stuff! For starters, walking in was nice and comfortable and came with a friendly greeting. It was 2 o'clock on a Thursday and there was a bit of business, but not too much to keep us from a visit and going to our seat in just a minute. My wife and I had different items so that we could taste more things. I don't believe that there was any negative conversation about a single bite. It was easy to get excited about the flavor of everything that we had. Pure comfort food at its best. If you made it this far in the review and don't go find out how wonderful this is. It was good. Meat, two sides, and bread for one price. Three meat selections- fried chicken, meatloaf and brisket the night we went. Brisket was $1.50 extra. It was falling apart tender BUT it was too salty. Husband loves salt and he said it was too much. Sides were very good. Bread selections (two) were homemade. Drinks are extra. VERY generous servings. I've been wanting to go to this place for a while and finally made it today. I'm so glad I made it and this will be a regular spot for me. The restaurant is located in a beautiful historic downtown building in the small town of Blackville, SC. As you enter, you pass the gift shop and find the food service line. It is set up cafeteria style and you get a slip with your plate. As you ask for drinks or slices of pie, they mark your slip. The portions were generous and the price was low. The hot bar has several meat and side options, all of which will be packed with southern flavor and greasy goodness. Don't forget about the deserts, which are numerous and one of the highlights of this place. What a gem in the small town of Blackville. Food was outstanding - among the best Southern cooking we have had since moving to the area. Everything was well prepared and service was excellent. You are charged for what you pick out of the serving line and then you can order dessert at the table. We could not resist dessert, and we were not disappointed. I had the hummingbird cake and loved it; my wife has the coconut creme pie. You can also buy bread, jams, and other items at the shop and we went home with a couple of loaves of bread that we enjoyed over the next few days. On a day trip with my family, who have all been vaccinated for Covid we planned a visit to God's Acre Healings Springs from the upstate of South Carolina. This was my first time going out of town since the pandemic. This was also going to be my first dine in experience too. We also planned on eating lunch at Miller's Bread Basket. Years ago I dined at an Amish restaurant in Ohio, and the food was so good. After seeing Miller's rating and reading the good reviews we decided to do lunch there. We didn't make reservations, and we had sixteen people in our group. One family member went in and asked if they could seat sixteen people, they said they would put us in the conference room. That's exactly what they did seated us, no one came in the room to tell us what we were supposed to do to get our food, or take our drink order. They just seated us and left us. I went with my niece to the room that had the food line to see what we needed to do to get our lunch. After doing that we told our family what they needed to do to get their food, and every body went and got in line. It's a cafeteria style set up. A lady who I assumed was the owner came through telling us " to make a line coming in and out " was rude, we should have left at that point. You can get a meat and two for $10.15, a small salad for 4.80. The salad bar was small, but had a decent selection of add ins for a salad, the dressing containers were a little hard to maneuver, once I figured it out that was ok. They do provide gloves to use for making your salad, food from the hot bar is served cafeteria style, which was fine with me. From the hot bar I got carrots, mac and cheese, fried chicken( white meat) a breast and wing and a slice of butternut bread. By the time I got back from getting my food a waitress was taking drink orders. She was very nice, helpful and friendly. The carrots were so bright in color I just knew they would taste good, they tasted like carrots, but without any seasoning, the mac and cheese was flavorless too, the fried chicken was crispy and seasoned well. The homemade butternut bread was just ok, I tasted it and left it alone. No one wanted dessert, but some family members did buy some of the home made apple butters and jams. The 3 stars are for the unorganized way my family was treated, the salad bar, fried chicken and the waitress taking our drink order. I won't dine at Miller's Bread Basket again. The food in my opinion was mediocre at best. read more

Dan and Dave got it right. This place is worth driving to as a destination. Some of the best meatloaf I've ever eaten, incredible greens, fried chicken, and insanely good homemade breads. As they said, you just go through the line, tell them what you want, then pay. I challenge you to even try to pick a meal over $10 and I guarantee you will be stuffed! I was in around Christmas and still remember the number of people picking up sweet bread orders to go. I also remember the German Amish or Mennonite influence, the quaint storefront, and the Wide mix of affluent And working stiff eating lunch together. It has a SC heritage sign beside it and an antique store attached that sells crafts, breads, jams, and junk. Finally...did i say that the food was fantastic? The essence of local flavor, this place seems lost in time and place. The Amish eatery features a large dining area and a fixed menu for lunch and dinner - served cafeteria-style. Just tell the ladies what you want and they will fill up your plate. For lunch I got a full plate of all the comfort foods (meat loaf, fried chicken, broccoli casserole, green beans, and a muffin) for $7.25. Of course, the Amish are famous for their pastries, and our group could not resist. They have a "pie lady" that makes all their pies and cobblers. I had peach cobbler to die for, and other selections included German chocolate pie, shoo-fly pie, pecan pie, chocolate fudge pie, apple pie and others. Although the place seems out of place with the rest of impoverished rural areas of South Carolina, it has become a landmark for local tourism, as it features it's own interpretive display provided by the State tourism people. I went for lunch and I thought this place was pretty basic. It is a buffet style which includes choices of meat, vegetables, and bread. You can also get a small salad or a large salad from the salad bar. The food looked fresh and well prepared. I ordered the roasted turkey and green beans. Off rip I could tell the green beans were canned green beans which I am not a fan of, especially from a restaurant. There was nothing added to them to even try to mask or boost the flavor.The roasted turkey, however, was pretty good. No complaints there. The yeast rolls were also really good. It was everything yeasty and buttery; a carb heaven. The salad bar had plenty of choices so I indulged in a small salad. It was equally good but nothing fantastic. My lunch date ordered meatloaf. The meatloaf was not good at all and they charged extra for the tomato sauce which they called stewed tomatoes. Overall I'll probably be back but only out of convenience. read more

We are taking a weekend away and this little cafeteria style hole in the wall was wonderful. The mashed potatoes and gravy were spot on. The broccoli casserole, sweet potato casserole, broccoli salad, stuffed bell peppers, meatloaf, fried chicken and really everything I've gotten there is fantastic. If you ever happen to drive through Blackville, I highly recommend you swing by this place. It's a small buffet style restaurant but they do it well! You know how most buffet restaurants offer a million items to pick from but usually half are Decent and the other half are less than mediocre. This is NOT that place. There is great variety and somehow they manage it to where everything tastes just like it came from grandma's kitchen! From fried chicken to meatloaf and Mac and cheese to broccoli casserole I've never had a bad meal here. I live about 45 minutes away from this restaurant, and whenever I get the notion to go for a motorcycle ride with the destination being a great place to eat this is the place I ride to. The ride along the back roads to Blackville is beautiful, and the restaurant itself is top-notch. The people are always friendly and helpful, and the food is excellent - home cooking at its best! I don't care what anyone here says. Especially the awful review below that says the fried chicken has no crust. That makes me just plain mad. Nope, the crust is perfect....ya know why? Because it isn't CRUST! It's called skin. You can actually taste the chicken...imagine that? We deliberately went out to find the best fried chicken anyone knew about down here. I am friends with people at The local palate and other papers here in Charleston. I asked....the best of the best. I got different answers. One person said try this place...I did. The worst thing about this place is their hours of operation. Open only a few hours on weekends. But no matter. My wife and I went on a "find the best fried chicken crusade." After trying 9 recommended places for the best fried chicken from Charleston to Hardeeville to Augusta....this wins it hands down. Not too thick on the breading, juicy and perfect. A bit more expensive and you can tell where the money goes...into the creation of these perfect pieces of chicken. A++! read more

Days off lately have meant ROADTRIPS! Now don't get me wrong, I didn't road trip just to Miller's (ha, Novice) I was going to Healing Springs. When at Healing Springs.. and after an hour and half drive; one gets hungry. Just minutes away is Miller's on a quaint Main Street complete with tons of locals in the know. I have visited a Mennonite bakery before near Bamburg, SC and have never forgotten the experience (more than 20 years ago) and knew I had to be in for something good. Sadly, a few of their reviews were not so great and I thought, "these folks don't understand how things work in small towns, they had to be from OFT". I was so correct! When you enter the mecca of lunch time success you are greeted with sweet people and a glimpse into the other room where they keep the "goods". Much to my pleasure meatloaf was on the cafeteria style set up, looked so perfect and it was over whelming deciding on it's friends on the plate journey. These sweet women were patient and explained everything and described what fresh breads they also offered. You get a slip at the end with your proper check marks and then journey into one of the 2 other areas of the building where you get to enjoy the spoils of your conquest. I saw a lady order "half portions" so she could try more types of vegetables. I had meatloaf with a stewed tomato topping, carrots, green beans and sweet potato souffle. (Oh My!) The food was fresh, visually appealing, and well-prepared. The stewed tomatoes had a lot of sugar in them which I was not accustomed to, but they were still pretty good. I liked the fact that you could just select the items that you wanted from the cafeteria line, which is great if you are trying to practice portion control. FYI: They didn't have any vegetarian protein options (entrees or sides) and their pies use lard for the crust. The waitress never did get to my table, but I understood because she looked really busy, was working really hard, and it appeared they were short staffed. I was able to approach the cashier and she kindly assisted me. My only negative is that the top 8 trays were dirty and I had to dig through the stack for a clean one. The other tableware looked clean. It is a really old building but also very unique for the area.
