Riding horses has been a dream for both our daughters. We came to Miller Equestrian as a Christmas gift to our daughters and have always been very pleased. The owners Ann and Frank are the nicest hardworking people you will ever meet. They are both 100% hands on people, and for that reason you get a family environment when you walk in the barn. The trainers have all gone above and beyond for our girls, they have a genuine care and respect for the horses and the riders. Our youngest is trying her hardest to one day be apart of the show team. She is being trained very well by all the trainers, especially Katie & Ann. They both take the time to teach fundamentals to make her a better rider. Our older daughter has a developmental delay, her trainer, Aurora is very patient but disciplined while keeping a calm presence. We rode Ginger and had a basic lesson for an hour. Can't beat the price. Staff was pleasant. There were fawn and other animals.

The ranch is a gift, tucked away in the back of Escondido in what once the "country." The trainer Alina was lovely, she understood my personal intentions for taking a lesson and she tailored her instruction to my needs. I was delighted, had a great time felt welcome and love the beautiful horses. However, when I returned the next week I learned that the ranch had upsetting personal family news for the staff I was understanding. Even though Alina was not here I was still going to have a lesson. I'm okay with the cost for the time and expertise of the trainers; nevertheless, I'm not okay with being insulted and treated like a bratty child for no reason. My young trainer was trying to be accommodating and kind, but her bossy, overbearing supervisor decided she needed to give me her input which was not needed. We all have bad days and difficult times but we can choose to go on or we can take a day off. This lady needed a day off. Beautiful place otherwise if you can handle grumpy people. read more

We were taking lessons at another place for while and she was getting nowhere. It was like the same thing every week and no progress. We heard about Miller and tried them and they interact more, pay attention to the student more in general and give feedback when needed so the student can learn. We wanted to go horseback riding, but most of the places were closed early or wanted advance notice for a Sunday, and every one we phoned the call went straight to voicemail or no answer, so we decided to just stop in at the Morgan Horse Club. Good choice! Met Ann, who owns the place along with her husband Frank, and Ann arranged an immediate lesson. Just one of us decided to do it, so I watched and took pictures. Was her first time (I've ridden horses a number of times since I was a child, but no formal lessons). Was great! Govinda was her instructor, and taught her to walk and trot (UP and down, UP and down with each step, shoulders up) on a very obedient and gentle 26 year old horse named Kappy. Lesson lasted about an hour, was a good workout, and a lot of fun, on a brilliant but not too hot afternoon. The place has 50 horses, including a few new ones kept in a side corral. We found out that on weekends, especially Sundays, the last lesson is at about 2pm, but on weekdays lessons go until about 5 or 6pm, to accommodate the kids coming in after school. I love this place! Ann and Frank have so much knowledge. They teach anyone who has the desire. You can hang around the barn, as long as you want if you're willing to learn or help. The other assistant trainers and teachers are excellent! I have been riding here around 11 years, and would never go anywhere else. They also have Birthday parties that all the kids enjoy. One of the rider assistants yanked down on my daughters helmet pulling her head forward. Hurt her neck a little. And said "do you like that?" Confused. My daughter says no. The trainer said. Make sure you don't do it to horses. Using violence against my kid is no way to train her how to ride a horse. Place is dirty. Meaning for people. No where to sit without filth on it. I expect the horse areas to have their level of dirt. But the seating is so nasty you just stand. NO WATER. . It's hot. There not water No snacks. Bring your own or your screwed. No where to put your belongings. Leave everything in the car. Some pretend to be nice. But you can tell it's a family that likes to yell. I had to tell the "boss lady" You can't yell at me to give me instructions. Just feels toxic and unfun. Horses seem like their treated well. They just don't treat people well. read more

My daughter started riding with Millers when she was four years old. she is now 22 years old and working in the horse industry. She not only learned how to Ride a horse she also learned valuable life skills that she would not have learned any where else. WARNING: DO NOT GO HERE! That is the short 'review'. Now let me explain why I am taking the time to tell people to take their business elsewhere. My ten year old daughter wanted horseback riding lessons for her birthday. My wife found this place online and saw they did birthday parties where everyone gets to ride and have a lesson. Seemed like a good idea so we did it. Birthday party was fine. The owner, 'Miss Ann' seemed a bit gruff and not the friendliest type but we thought well, maybe that's just how 'horse people' are. After the party we inquired about lessons and decided to continue with lessons every 1-2 weeks for both our ten year old as well as our thirteen year old daughter. Sometimes the lessons were fine, sometimes they were disorganized and overbooked so our daughters would not have the best lesson. We would write it off and not think too much of it. What we did notice is 'Miss Ann' and her gruff and unfriendly manner was not just limited to her but many of her trainers as well. Our kids would occasionally say that one of the trainers was 'being pretty mean' during a lesson. Now let me make something perfectly clear - we are NOT coddling helicopter parents. We are strict and usually will tell our kids to just toughen up a bit and deal with. So when they would make these occasional remarks about the trainers or 'Miss Ann' being snappy or yelling at them we would tell them that's just the way people are some times and they probably need to be a little tough on kids because horses can be dangerous. So all that being said, there are still lines or boundaries you do not cross as a paid professional trainer in any sport or discipline. Last week 'Miss Ann' crossed that line. Our thirteen year old daughter is no snowflake. She has broken bones, amassed numerous scars with barely a tear and is largely unfazed by 'hurt feelings'. So when she finished a lesson and literally burst into tears, for her, it's highly unusual. Here's what happened: First thing that day is they screwed up and overbooked so there were too many people, too many horses and not enough room. Our thirteen year old was riding inside the stable and attempting to maneuver around the overly crowded area with other people and their horses (and a bunch of dogs). Well, she got a little too close to 'Miss Ann' (about three feet) as she stood there talking to someone and said, "If you step on my foot I'm gonna make you get off your horse, you understand?" As she said this she literally jabbed the horse in the neck with a pen to make it jerk its head away from her. Then, when she got too close again (because of the overcrowding) 'Miss Ann' made her stop the horse and then proceeded to call her irresponsible, accused her of not trying hard enough and then like a scolding parent made her apologize with the whole, "What do you say?" routine. Sorry, but that is not her job as a paid horse trainer. To make things worse, she was berating her in front of 15 or so other people. One of the lovely things she said in her scold session was, "I going to slap your horse so he takes off running and throws you off!" I'm all for being firm and strict but a humiliating rant in front of a group of people AND threatening to do something that could get her seriously hurt to 'teach her a lesson' is 100% unacceptable and over the line. The reason she was having trouble navigating and controlling the horse was because it was too crowded because of 'Miss Ann's' failure in organizing and booking. But no, even that wasn't enough. A bit later, 'Miss Ann' AGAIN stopped her when she got too close and started in with, "What did I tell you? Are you a smart girl? Do you have a brain? Well it's not looking like it." Really? We are paying for this? Yeah, not anymore. Then the final nail on this hay filled coffin, was from one of the moody trainers who was barking some trot orders she was having difficulty following. The wonderful input she got from that was, "If you're not going to trot when I say trot then you need to get off the horse." Oh yeah, good times! Don't take just our word for it. Read through some of the reviews here on Yelp and you will see various mentions of the training being fine if 'the trainers are in a good mood' that day. Or the one review where a trainer aggressively yanks on a student's helmet and says, "You like that? That feel good? That's how your horse feels!" Normally I would write that stuff off as one lame or cranky trainer here and there but now we know that unprofessional demeaning morale comes top down from the owner herself - 'Miss Ann'. So do yourself and your kids a favor, pay a little extra and go somewhere that doesn't have an owner that is clearly burnt out and been doing it too long. 'Miss Ann' needs to pack it up and do something different in life because, berating, insulting and even threatening children who are trying to learn how to ride is a clear sign it's time to move on. Take your business elsewhere folks. read more

My daughter went here for summer camp, and although she had fun I wasn't very impressed. There's no organization whatsoever. They never contacted us after we put a deposit down, so I had to contact them the day before. There's no sign-in or sign-out, so you just take your kids home and nobody really notices. Nobody wore masks, and there was no attempt at distancing or even suggesting kids wash their hands. Kind of gross any time, and dangerous during Covid. Kids had a choice of swimming in a crowded pool at the end of camp or cleaning a horse trailer. Not a great choice. The trainers are pretty tough and a couple of times my daughter was in tears telling me about her day -- maybe tough is good for classes, but this was camp and should have been a little lighter and more fun. She enjoyed brushing the horse, but has no interest in riding after it. read more

We brought our daughter and 3 friends here as a 6th birthday gift - what a treat! They spent 2.5 hours learning about horses, grooming them, feeding them, saddling up and getting riding lessons in the ring. The instructors were sweet, patient and in-tune with the needs of each child. They were also very attentive the the safety of our kids. The property and stables are easy to get to and well maintained. We even had the extra unexpected bonus on visiting with a litter of new born kitties in the haystacks! We had an angering experience here, which is a pity because we only came for a birthday party. The proprietor was scathing and unkind to my 11 year old daughter, who has just enough riding experience and confidence to tick off this trainer of a different sort of discipline, but would never be contrary with an adult. When I came to pick my child up, she was crestfallen, which I later learned was because she had been cajoled by Anne. Upon my arrival, Anne launched into a diatribe-- some agenda she has apparently long held against the barn in Del Mar where my child has been taking lessons happily for months. My daughter and Niece absolutely love coming here!! We have been going for a couple months now for weekly lessons and they love it. All the teachers are amazing with kids and have experience dealing with children. Sometimes they have to be firm with my girls to watch out for their safety but that's what I expect, because they know what's best around these animals. My 7 y/o Daughter has been training with Miller equestrian for several years now and has learned TONS of things from riding, and handling horses... like commanding the 1000lbs horse to do various things walk a certain way, and to know how to touch the leg and say a command having the horse to lift its leg to clean the hoof , to being a good sport in a competitive show. The trainers are professional, champions themselves in the sport. Plus my daughter is hanging out with other peers that enjoy the same hobby as herself. The horses are absolutely top quality and are well cared for. We did the Horse Birthday Party on April 13, 2014 for my 9 year old daughter at Miller Equestrian Services -- all 6 girls were all smiles, they had a great time, one of the best birthday parties so far. There were 4 instructors, Ann the owner plus one instructor per horse. There was an area to have a party and keep snacks & drinks was ok to bring pizza & cake but we did that part at home. After the lesson the girls fed the horses carrots and apples - even the dogs we were allowed to feed apples after the horse bit the apple in half - it was fun. The fee was $35/child for around 2+ hours, two girls shared a horse, helmets were provided. A lot of time was spent on training, safety, grooming, & learning about horses before getting to ride. There were lots of horses and dogs, and the girls saw the newborn horse Ginger and we walked though the stables and barn learning about several other horses. I see another review for this same day with a low rating, some parents would rather have their kids get their way and be unsafe, instead of taking advice to prevent injury. So they switched stables from Del Mar and are complaining about being trained to ride safely. There are around 30 horses and 6 dogs at the ranch probably more, the three horses picked for the party were friendly and well trained - very tame. Today my 7 year old daughter had her first experience horseback riding here and I rode for the first time in many years (I've only done it a few times in my life. And I'm old.) My daughter has some motor skill challenges and I do not hear very well so we had some issues going into this that scared me a bit but once I told our trainer about them, she was super understanding. She spent 2.5 hours with us and we learned how to do everything from brushing the horses, to putting on the saddle, to riding and even trotting! It was a WONDERFUL experience. Our trainer was firm with my daughter when she started goofing off and with me when I had my feet in the wrong position, but I appreciated that because it kept us safe and that was my #1 priority. The horses are all stunning and our trainer selected the perfect horses for my daughter and I (she has 11!). My daughter got a little horse that had the sweetest personality. I got a huge horse that liked to go slow...which was plenty fine with me. All in all a super experience that I'd recommend to anyone. read more

Devoted to educating people on the wonderful world of horses! Ann and her whole team of eager helpers really put out careful effort to educate our girl scout troop on the merits of horsemanship. They were able to see and learn about different breeds of horses, coloration, personalities and disciplines. They learned to improve their riding on some trusting good-souled horses and they even got to see first hand real horse dentistry at work - a rare sight. It is clear this equestrian outfit is striving to instill confidence and knowledge in their riders and all the enthusiastic, happy faces around -- horse and human -- were testimony that it is working! read more
