Praxis-High Lakes Sisters is a mess. Even if one nurse or doctor does a good job, they may be gone…read morenext time you come in. Reception and call operator staff seem poorly trained. Calls go unanswered, prescriptions and lab requests don't show up at the pharmacy or lab. It used to be a good small-town clinic -- a little shabby and disorganized but it had good doctors who were there a long time. At some point Praxis bought them out. The original doctors, the Millers who were getting high ratings here on Yelp, left Praxis High Lakes to form some other clinic out-of-town. My family has had occasional good care from several providers at the new Praxis High Lakes over the years, especially Kirkpatrick who is gone now. Providers come and go. High turnover. Not reassuring. Latest provider ended up writing a prescription for a risky alternative medication that could have hurt my wife badly. She didn't take it, as advised by other doctors, including one at another Praxis facility down in Bend. Again, not reassuring. Office and reception staff act like they haven't ever dealt with medical concerns before: patients in pain, returning phone calls, sending out lab requests, using a simple fax machine if your computer system isn't working. It's not rocket science but it does take compassion and experience, and you do have to listen. Yes I worked in a clinic myself. If we bring up problems with their communications flow, like not getting our calls returned or having to show up in person to get a prescription or lab request because their fax machine/computer system doesn't work, the people at High Lakes are defensive and unresponsive. Like they were trained by lawyers instead of caregivers or experienced reception staff. This place is bizarre and uncomfortable to deal with. We finally left. My family is doing great now, at St. Charles Sisters clinic and at Summit BMC Sisters.

This is because the staff is simply uninformed on how Tricare Select insurance works which provides coverage for retired military members. Instead of taking my insurance as they've always done, the staff now insisted I needed a VA referral (Tricare and the Veterans Administration are not connected). This is despite the clinic's Doctor being a network provided to Tricare. It's simply inexcusable for medical staff to deny a military retiree service due to lack of knowledge on a rather common insurance plan.

In all honesty, I can not advise anyone to go here. Especially if you're under the age of 50, and/or have State Insurance (which is what I've been told). I've had multiple visits at this facility over the past few years. I've been seen by the previous medical staff (who ultimately left the practice to work elsewhere... if that tells you anything), as well as the new practitioners (I'll leave names out, for embarrassment's sake). However, after several years of visits, and being seen by a multitude of "professionals", I have never received any proper treatment(s) and/or care. They did once set me up with their "in-house" therapist. That was great... for exactly 3-visits. Then the therapist left to start her own private practice, and St. Charles did not have a replacement therapist to offer. My SO actually attended a recent visit with me (with one of the new doctors); she eventually broke down into tears, and asked the doctor "why won't you people help him?! He's suffering everyday", only to get a cold stare in return. My SO said the doctor showed zero empathy, and little-to-no concern, even when I discussed suicide. Additionally, whenever I would present a published NIH study that either countered what the doctor said, or shed light on a possible alternative treatment, I would just be told "well, that's just where we'll have to disagree". I struggle with chronic back and nerve pain (stemming from degenerative disk disease, and an impinged sciatic nerve), along with GAD, MDD, and Panic Disorder. The only "help" this facility has offered (and wow, are they quick to offer it) are SSRI's, SNRI's, and/or Tricyclic Antidepressants. They do not appear to keep up with modern studies. Had they done so, they would know the latest research shows that people with depression don't have different levels of serotonin in their brains compared to people without depression. In other words, this sounds like we should explore other treatment options. Yet, all they offer is a plethora of SSRI's, and say "if this one doesn't work, or if it actually worsens your symptoms, we can try a different one". And remember, each of these meds has a trial-period (up to a month) before you know if it will help you. They're terrible drugs to be on. When it comes to quality of life, and/or pain management, since they're unable and unwilling to help, all you'll get is a referral to see someone else, who 'Lo and behold, won't help you either (however, this "back-and-forth" system of referrals and follow-ups sure does generate a lot of bills...). Additionally, if you are seen here, please make sure you review ALL the after-care notes through My Chart. As a personal example, one of the new doctors obviously judged me, and denied me treatment based off her judgement. They actually LIED (no pun intended) on an after-visit summary. They noted that I was "seeking MDMA". I contacted her through My Chart (so there would be a record), and asked where she came up with that information. Ultimately, she stated she must have "misunderstood" what I said, and then she edited the notes to no longer reflect such a lie. I filed a grievance over the lack of care I received, as well as for being judged and neglected, however, as I've since learned from an attorney, such a document will only fall on deaf ears. I'm sure the very same applies to this review as well.
