I had concerns over a basement wall and the work done by previous owners of my home. I called MCE and they agreed to send over an engineer. They were upfront about the cost of an assessment. Unfortunately, when the engineer arrived he concluded that the walls needed to be opened up completely for him to provide the assessment and that I should call them to come back again once I opened up all the walls. So I have basically paid hundreds of dollars for 20 minutes of their time and them to say "We don't know." It would have been nice to have known that completely open walls were necessary to do the eval. The only other feedback is that the engineer was polite, professional, and on time. My two stars are for the waste of time and money which i don't have a lot of. I have since worked with a couple other companies that were much better with communications and gave me great evaluations. read more

They were exceptional at responding to my questions and walked me through. They also seemed to care about my concerns, which was welcome. Structural engineering is a very, very specialized item. It's math you want correct and traceable to make sure things you build will stand up. It's required whenever you are building a retaining wall greater than four feet tall. That four feet includes the required 18 inches underground to provide a stable base and prevent frost heaving. Also required sometimes when the land above has a slope. I worked with engineer Kevin McCormick there. He is sharp, fast. He can adapt to your project, discuss design tradeoffs, do drawings for permits, do on-site inspections/ provide advice to contractors in a contractor-friendly manner, and even negotiate and politely prevail with City of Portland structural engineers on what the proper formula is right for the job. I have developed two reinforced concrete structural walls with engineer Mr McCormick, including permit drawings, calculations, on-site issues and details for contractors. He was very polite and customer-oriented explaining to the rebar guys on the job site how to fix what they were doing so the wall would stand up. Contractors are sensitive - weird. They learned something from this engineer without losing face. Miller has a whole staff of experienced and qualified structural engineers. This is the spot in Portland metro, based on experience, for structural engineering for walls and structural remodels! Later, in 2018, I was helping a friend prepare her house for sale. Mr McCormick had analyzed a concern of a sagging beam faulting a sliding big window. I used that report to provide a simple fix. She found him independently, and his work was stellar. They have the expertise to work on complex projects, but are also willing to work on smaller commercial or residential projects, and they don't treat it like it's any less important. They also really care about their customers, as evidenced by their fantastic customer service and the fairness of the contract you sign with them. For example, many engineering firms will limit their liability to the cost of their services, but MCE will cover losses up to their insurance limits (if you pay a small administrative fee). So if anything were to go wrong, you would be adequately compensated. I have used MCE for two different projects. One project involved replacing an HVAC unit at a commercial building. Paul Albertine drew up the plans for getting a permit. One of the tenants felt like the work would be too disruptive to their business, but Paul was able to come up with an alternative that ended up saving money despite the additional cost of revising the plans. I also worked with Kevin McCormick on what started out as a small job. He was hired to make recommendations on needed repairs and to assess damage to our home caused by a contractor. I had a lot of questions (I was embarrassingly ignorant about structural repairs), but Kevin patiently answered all of them. I learned a lot from him and am grateful. The issue dragged on for quite awhile as I tried to resolve the problems with the contractor. The City of Portland also scrutinized everything because the contractor had not obtained proper permits. The City took the plans in for review and came up with a long list of questions. Kevin took care of it, and did not charge me extra for all of that additional work. Kevin did a thorough assessment of our home and wrote up an excellent report. He is willing to be an expert witness in court or arbitration, and is not afraid to draw conclusions and defend his opinions. Fortunately for me, the situation was resolved before it reached that point, but it was reassuring knowing he would advocate for me. One thing I learned from the experience is to always hire your own engineer; don't let a contractor hire one for you. This would have protected my interests, and may very well have prevented any problems in the first place. If you're looking for a structural engineering firm, I highly recommend MCE. read more

I was doing a remodel & removed drywall from a wall only to discover the spanning beam did not span the room. I contacted Lane Jobe at Miller Consulting Engineers & he engineered a solution using steel plates. He provided drawings & the template for the plate holes for the steel manufacturer.
