Since I don't eat meat, my options were basically potato salad and slaw, so I would love to see a few more meatless options at future events. My only real complaint was the HEAT! Whew! August in Memphis from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. is HOT. I would definitely suggest moving the hours earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon/evening next year. Other than the heat, I loved every bit of it. Great music, great people, great atmosphere, plenty of food, and an awesome Memphis vibe. This was an amazing community event, and I would definitely attend again--just hopefully at a cooler time of day!

Bring your chairs, blankets, it gets crowded early! There were some local food trucks, but some people bring their own food, Ravinia style. We loved the music program of pop hits going back a few decades, some symphony standards, and some singers gave us chills. Walkin' in Memphis with full singers? "What's Goin' On" with Symphony backing the score? Shell, Yeah!

Home to the Memphis Songwriters Association monthly meetings, Mark Parsell has been and is acting president of the longest consistently run grass roots songwriters association in Memphis that was founded by Estelle Acton (the AX in STAX) along with several others in 1973. The all ages events (with some occasional exceptions) is run just like a house concert where listeners are allowed to tip whatever they can afford ($5 to $10 per person suggested by me) and bring their own drinks or donate to the house beer/wine fund. You either walk the bridge or ride the monorail, and suddenly you're on this little river island with downtown Memphis glimmering behind you and the water drifting slow and wide in front. Then the amphitheater opens up--a humble, open-air stage with rows of concrete seats that somehow feel more personal than plush. It's not fancy. It's real. It's the kind of place where you don't just watch a show--you feel it. The music bounces off the river and wraps around the crowd, and whether you're there for blues, rock, or something in between, the view and the vibe do something to you. It's not about perfection. Access the Amphitheatre on foot from Island Drive or by walking across the skybridge from downtown which is open and can be accessed at 125 N. Front St. with tickets are sold by event on Ticketmaster. Paid parking available on the island or in the River Parks Garage. Entrance to the garage is at the corner of Front St. and Poplar. Fees range from $3-$10, depending on the event. We've watched the fireworks here but concerts are the reason we come here year after year. Our last show was James Taylor and it was terrific. The acoustics are quite nice and the view is outstanding but it gets pretty hot on the Mississippi in the summer so beware. The bathroom and booze lines are worse than most sports venues I've been to so that can be a bit of a problem but other than that, and the shclep across the bridge, it's a pretty cool place to see a show. Several of them were very shaky, and there were some that felt like they were about to come up out of the floor. I did feel like he cut the show just a little short. There's always that one drunk person that wants to yell out from the crowd. I think it was starting to irritating. What can you say about the orpheum? That hasn't already been said. It's a very nice historical place. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars. Is because like everyone else, they take advantage of people on concessions. I realized back in the day. This is the way places made their money. It's a little different these days. They make plenty of money on the shows. My other small complaint is the seating. Although its way better than Minglewood Hall, the seats are just too close together. I'm a big fella, and it's just very uncomfortable. Overall, they put on great shows and the place is very nice. I definitely wouldn't let the small things stop you from going.

It is located in the Graceland Exhibition area. It's a cool place to wind down after all the touring and have a few drinks before heading home. Carlos was our bartender and was attentive and super friendly. He supplied us with complimentary chips and Hawaiian lei's. They have food but we did not try any so can't comment on that. Worth checking out if ever at Graceland.
