    Hamburger and fries

The Levee had amazing food and great service. The burgers and fries are delicious, and the decor and environment is very cool. Definitely a hidden gem.

Eat inside or out on their spacious front screened in porch.

This is what it says "Commissary". Groceries/bar/restaurant full of Southern Hospitality and delicious food and a big variety of favorites.

    Fried green beans

First time here, and I plan to be back. Portions were good, pricing was fair, and Marty, my waitress, was excellent. Super friendly and attentive. I was splurging a bit, so I tried a couple of different things. Shrimp & Crab dip - I enjoyed this, but found the flavor just a little bland. The chips that came with it were fresh fried and excellent--super thin the way I like them. I just wish the dip could kick it up a notch. Breaded & Fried Green Beans - Just like the dip, the batter used on the green beans simply didn't have much flavor. That said, they were fried to perfection, with just the right amount of crunch for me. I like stuff that stands on its own without condiments, but in this case dipping them in ranch was the right thing to do, just to give it a little extra "umph". Bacon Cheeseburger & Tots - Oh my oh my. Marty said this was one of the best things on the menu, and I really like a good burger. I went minimal, because I wanted to taste the meat, and man was it good. Juicy but not undercooked, full of flavor, and a good 1/2 pound at least. Excellent burger! I took one star off because of the blandness of the first couple of items, but they just needed a little more punch in my opinion. Layout of the place is interesting. You walk in and there is a deli counter and drinks coolers, with several tables in the bright front section. Then you go down a hall that connects you to the darker, back section of the place, where you find a bunch of booths, jukebox, pool table, and bar, as well as the stage where they occasionally have live music. Two totally different atmospheres between the front and back seating sections, and like I said, a hallway in between. The kitchen is laid out along the side of the building and can be accessed from the front or back of the restaurant, so like the hallway it is connected front and back as well. I don't think I've ever seen a layout quite like this before. Smoking is allowed, but it seems to be confined more to the back section. They have specials on various nights of the week, such as Friday being steak night, but Marty warned me that is a busy night and they sold out of every steak they had last Friday. They also serve breakfast on Saturdays, which I'll have to check out during a future visit. The place was worth the trip, and I'll be back!

Undeterred, I pivoted to a **Manhattan**, and *oh my glory*--turns out the first mixologist was just warming up (or maybe daydreaming?). Then, salvation arrived in the form of a **gothic cocktail queen** who waved her magic shaker, swapped out the **1738** for a *proper* Old Fashioned, and all was right with the world. (*Saturday at 8 PM vibes: chill, smooth, just how I like it.*) By **9 PM**, the place was *alive*--good energy, great staff, just a solid crew making sure the night stayed on track. Now, the plot twist? I was *this close* to dropping a **2-star rating**... until the **blackened catfish** hit my table. **HOLY FLAVOR.** Perfectly seasoned, generous portion--I'm talking *"cancel your dinner plans and just come here"* levels of delicious. **4 STARS, EASY.** Final verdict? **Rough start, glorious finish.** Will be back for that catfish... and maybe another round of cocktail roulette. this was perfect for a gambling town. Yes, it does feel a bit dated, but that is not a bad thing. The staff is overall friendly and the drinks are cold. Bars have a long history of being a spot to gather in both good times and bad. The thing I notice is that they are very inclusive. They have several nights including karaoke, comedy, drag shows, and various event nights throughout the week. The owner is super sweet and inviting. She made sure to go around and speak to everyone that was there. During my visit, I did order food. I had the chess club sandwich. It is served on white bread and is filled with salami, bacon, gouda, lettuce pickle and onions. It was ok. It took forever for it to come out. People who had arrived way after us received their food quicker than we did. I had to go to the bar several times to ask about our food. I found out that the bartender was also the cook, so that semi explains the delay. I had a salad along with my sandwich. It was ok. I couldn't eat it all because the dressing was not good. I do want to state that it is a cool place to dive into if you are looking for something to do throughout the week. I not sure if the food is meant to be the central focus, but they so have vegan options in addition to a full craft and alcoholic beverage menu.

It was economical, too, so we had quality food while spending a reasonable amount of money. I had the catfish BLT, which was a simple catfish burger with the most basic ingredients. Yet the catfish itself was so tasty that I didn't even need ketchup or mayo for the burger. It was so seasoned that it definitely made the burger an enjoyable experience. My partner had the kingfish platter which was essentially catfish as well. But then there was a small cup of coleslaw that we both thought was the best we've had, mainly because they didn't use mayo but some kind of vinegar to supplement the taste. And then my partner had the deep fried pecan pie and I had a taste of it. Even though I am not even the biggest fan of pecan pie, I really enjoyed that one and I think it was because the deep fried aspect along with whipped cream complemented the gelatinous material in pecan pies (don't know how to call it). There was music 365 days a week in the club, and particularly we were there during the annual Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Festival, so it was extra special. There were visitors all over the world attending the festival and many great bands played in the club. The amount of mess on the walls in the club speaks to the historically and culturally rich aspect of this club and of this town. Definitely a 5 star experience.
