Pottery,  trout fishing, gem mining, tubing, wineries, and lots of great restaurants! This place has three sleeping areas up to 4 adults and 4 kids. The top floor is a queen bedroom loft, with a half bath. The main floor is a nice size living room with a kitchen open floor plan and a full bath. Down below halfway down the stairs is a washer and dryer (laundry area) and at the bottom of the stairs are 2 bedrooms. one with a king-size bed and one with 2 sets of bunk beds for 4 kids and a full bathroom. Full house Central Air and heating. Parking for at least 2 cars out front and additional spots at the club house. Access to the tennis courts, pool, and hiking trails with lots of open space in the area. You can also bring fishing equipment and fish on the Watauga River that runs through the community. Since I couldn't reach anyone at High Country Vacation Homes for 10 minutes or so, we started cleaning since we didn't have any sheets for the beds and everything was dirty from the previous tenants. When I finally got a hold of the office, we were deep into cleaning, so there was no point for them to send a housekeeper. I was told, "This doesn't happen a lot," and then when I asked how much we will be refunded for this, I was told, "We usually only refund the cleaning fee." So it "doesn't happen a lot", but they "usually" only refund the cleaning fee. Sounds like it happens a lot to me. After more than a month, and me making it perfectly clear that I wanted a refund of one cleaning fee since the house wasn't clean when we arrived, and then another cleaning fee since we had to spend the first evening of our vacation cleaning the house, we finally got some money back. But only the equivalent of one cleaning fee. And I was told we got our security deposit back, like it was some sort of a favor, when in fact, we left the house in way better condition than we found it. Losing the first evening of our vacation, especially to cleaning, should be more of a refund than $125. That is the absolute LEAST we should have got refunded. So, if you want the absolute least out of a property management company, then go with High Country Vacation Homes. But next vacation, our money will be going to a property company who deserves it. We are talking weeks to get calls back from the lady who was supposed to be getting our listing ready, and when it was finally Posted ... crickets. Priced too high, which we let them know about asap, and literally no response to adjust. The response was " oh we've had lots of Calls with interested parties, NONE of which became a booked reservation. The excuse from their phone answerer was that out contact was out as her husband was having health problems. Unfortunate for sure , but there is still a business to be run. The owner, also a woman, never responded to multiple calls or emails. After SIX WEEKS of this , also know as six weeks of lost income ( including May and Memorial Day) we were able to catch someone actually in the office and get our keys and things back. It took another couple of months for them to remove the listing. I believe ( hope ) they are now formally out of business , though they were halfway there when we were dealing with the clowns. Just beware !

The cabin had every amenity we could of asked for (OK...a hot tub on the deck would have been nice) and we felt so comfortable from the minute we got there. The living room fireplace was amazing and we had it on constantly. The living room was comfortable and large. The kitchen was a bit small for both of us to work in but it was more than adequate. Both bedrooms were lovely (the king sized bed was super comfortable) and there were plenty of bathrooms to pick from. The sheets and towels were plentiful and plush and it was nice to be able to do laundry. The driveway up to the house was something. Super steep and it made the returns from our walks a bit challenging. And we were glad that it didn't snow to have to tackle it in the ice. The internet was great for keeping up with work but it wasn't sufficient to be able to stream movies or television. But the choices on the satellite TV made up for it. We loved The Getaway and will definiteley be back!

Renter Beware…read more Valle Crucis Log Cabin Rentals (logcabinrentals.com) unfortunately seems to be unreasonably holding security deposits. My family and I stayed 2 nights, October 28 and 29, at one of their cabins - Soothing Waters. One week after we checked out, I received an email stating there were stains found on 2 sets of sheets. They attached 2 photos of sheets (see below). I immediately responded that I had personally removed the sheets before we left the cabin the morning of our checkout and there were absolutely no stains on the sheets. Therefore, I don't feel we should lose our deposit for something that we didn't cause. By the way, what are the chances that 2 sets of sheets would have stains? Furthermore, sheets being replaced should be considered normal wear and tear. I didn't get a response from the email I sent, so I called Valle Crucis Log Cabin Rentals. I spoke with Emily who told me the reason it took so long to get the damage information to me is that she's working 60 hours a week and that the weekend of our stay, 20 out of 29 checkouts had damages. Seems excessive to me. I'm betting I'm not the only person with issues regarding security deposits from this Valle Crucis Log Cabin Rentals. Emily also told me this is why they push their renters into getting the $40 insurance and if I had purchased that, this would be covered. This also makes me skeptical of their practices. I have no idea if I'm going to get any of my deposit back or if they're keeping the entire $300, but I absolutely feel we should get back 100% of our deposit. Out of all the many, many times I've rented vacation homes in North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia and Colorado, I've NEVER had an issue like this!
