This place is a lovely and, for an independent shop, I wasn't terribly put off by the higher-than-average prices on some lines. High points: - similar items placed together, but also collections largely placed together - a handcut area of fat quarters that are different from the usual precut by the manufacturers selections. - a very big clearance room Low points: - clearance prices only apply to 1 yard or more and I didn't see this policy posted (though I might have missed it), so the savings if you're getting a smaller cut, like many do for quilts and such, is fantasy. -almost no modern-type design lines. I would've loved to see more Free Spirit or Cotton & Steel or the trendier Moda lines, etc. - some of the employees are not particularly friendly. In a small, independent shop, if you're unwilling to at least look like you're vaguely interested in the customers it's a bit off-putting. All in, I'll still be visiting again when I'm next in WIsconsin. Mill House is a nice shop with the possibility to be amazing. read more

Let's just say I have a $19,000 dollar long arm that does not work. I purchased this 12-13-22. It was delivered 2-23-23 and then set up 3-3-23. On 2-22-24 I reported to the store that the machine was starting to loud sound. All the tech did was a review over the phone and said there was nothing wrong. How can anyone diagnose anything over the phone? On 2 -23-24, I called the tech at Mill house again, this time it was making basting stitches that went through some fabric. Once again a list of questions over the phone and nothing is wrong. The very next day, there was a huge clunk and the machine isn't stitching properly. I was sent an employee a few days later to look at it, the machine was turned on and an alarm went off. The machine wouldn't work. I was told the pressure foot set off the alert. So close to a month later on 3-15-24 I received an email from Mill House quilts stating the tech was just out of the hospital and I was on a list for repair ASAP. I contacted another Bernina tech about fixing my long-arm but was told that Bernina has a territory thing going on and only the tech that sold me the machine can fix it. Contacted Bernina online, there is no phone number, all I could do is go under contact us, which I did explaining my issue with my $19,000 machine. After I sent that contact info, seconds later I received and automatic response in my email from Bernina stating I should contact my tech. My tech is having multiple health issues and hospitalizations, so basically he is unable to come to my house to do the repairs. Basically I purchased this long arm for $19,000, only to use it for 11 months. No tech to come out to fix it. Meanwhile my long-arm just sits holding projects for me to finish while the warranty wears down. Wish I could give this store a minus, so on a scale from 1 to 10, they get a 0. I ordered a panel online, said it was in stock on July 30, 2022. Credit card was charged and an email was to be sent with tracking number. I never heard from them so called the store on over two weeks later. They said they would get back. Called next day, said they would look into it and get back. Called third day, they said one of the owners was in but showing a machine to a customer and would call when he finished. Finally, on the fourth day a call came and said they were sorry. I explained the fabric panel I wanted was still showing on line. Got a story how they were having trouble with their on line provider. This place is awesome. It is in an old mill, so it has these amazing old plank floors and soaring ceilings with wooden beams. I visit Waunakee once a year to see my family and I always make time to go to Mill House Quilts. It is a huge store, so it has a great selection. Everything is really neat and well-organized. They have bolts of premium fabrics and a wide variety of fat quarter packs. Plus, they have thread, buttons, quilt patterns, and books. For any quilter, I highly recommend stopping into this store; it is only 30 minutes from Madison and is very easy to find--just off of Waunakee's Main St. near the train tracks. read more

I recently took the training class to use their long arm quilting machine so I could rent it to do some of my own quilts. About a week after the training I made an appointment to do one of my quits, The teacher of the training class was there to assist. In the process of edge to edge quilting the machine came off the belt and stitched some straight lines that needed to be removed. I grabbed my seam ripper and so did the teacher. In the process of doing this he commented "that wasn't good, I tore the quilt". There was approximately a 1/4 inch rip in my quilt. He never offered any kind of compensation for the rip and I ended up paying the total charge for the quilting. Because of this, I don't feel I can give this quilt to anyone. I will not take another quilt there. read more

Welcome to Wisconsin where "Quilt Shoppes" are fabric stores for quilters, and this is one of the best. They have a wide variety of high quality fabric and classes. I often make the extra trip if I am in the area because I live about 2 hours away. When I lived closer, I took my first quilt class here and I was hooked. While traveling in the area, we saw a huge billboard advertising QUILTS. Although we were on a tight time budget, the anticipation of finding a new quilt to freshen a bedroom was too inviting so we took the 30 minute detour. DO NOT BOTHER!!! This place has NO QUILTS for sale, but is actually a FABRIC STORE!!! When i asked for the QUILTS, an employee lethargically grunted that they don't have many, but I should look for samples being sold. It seems they sell their samples, but (1) they had quilted wallhangings and (2) if they had 15 offered for sale, I could not find them! I cannot tell you how irate and disappointed I am.... Adding to our experience was the EXTRA TRAFFIC we hit returning to the highway and wasting even more of our time!!! IMO: advertising as a quilt shop when they are really selling FABRIC is tantamount to a GROCERY store advertising itself as a RESTAURANT! Oh yes... Let me not forget to mention the BIG ASS DOG that followed me up the steps and sniffed my crotch while his (male caretaker) just watched and smiled. Over all .... GREAT PLACE! NOT!!! read more

I had a VERY negative experince at this shop. In reviewing the other comments I see that I am not the only one that has been greeted with the negative attitude. Normally quilters are very friendly and engaging people. I have never met a quilter I did not like. There was a particular quilt that I really liked and I asked if I could take a photo of the quilt. I was told, very tersely, that it was not allowed since many of the quilt patterns are copyrighted. Yet they post pictures of the quilts on their website. Go figure. Not one employee engaged me in conversation. They looked extremely unhappy (and I can understand why, especially with the attitude I met at the door). As a matter of fact, they looked at me as though they were told to watch me. The fabrics may be nice but with the atmosphere I wonder how they stay in business. read more

I do not know if they have new owners or just changed but the store has been remodeled since the last time I was there and I do not care for it so much and the staff was horribly rude - no one greeted anyone entering the store when I was there - one person totally ignored several of us that asked a question as to where to find something - just gave us a look and went back to cutting fabric like she couldn't be disturbed! Located in a turn-of-the-century mill, this quilt shop is a treasure. Tons of fabric (wide variety of colors as well as styles, from reproduction to traditional to batiks, including flannels, kid fabrics, plaids), lots of great samples to get your creative juices flowing, and a very friendly helpful staff. I will admit that I occasionally teach classes here (they have 3 classrooms upstairs), but even if I didn't teach here, it would still be one of my favorite Wisconsin quilt shops. Beautiful shop! Staff was helpful without being overbearing. LOVED the selection of Batiks! If you're a quilter, this place is a must stop! Everywhere I turned there was another alcove of fabric! BEAUTIFUL sample quilts hung everywhere, many of them had available kits put together by Mill House Quilts themselves. Prices are a little higher than a chain store, but $10 a yard for quality quilt cotton with this kind of inventory/selection is reasonable. This will be a regular destination for me! read more

I have been a quilter for three decades. In that time, my wife and I have visited countless quilt shops and shows. I have to say that this is the absolute worst quilt shop we have ever been to. We were there today, and they were not just unfriendly, but hostile. My wife had over $1,000 worth of products selected, and we left them at the counter. She left in tears. At $10-$12 per yard, they are also overpriced, but we were willing to overlook that fact at first. We will not be back, and we will definitely be warning quilt pals about this awful place. read more

I have been a quilter for over 20 years and have shopped at Mill House as long as they have been open. Since the previous owner sold her business, this shop has gone from my favorite quilt shop to the worst I have ever shopped. It has become difficult to even be able to put fabrics together for a quilt. The fabrics are old, as if the owners are afraid to put any fabrics older than 5 years old on sale. The fabric selection is also poor in the sense that everything looks the same. If there is a line of fabric, it's like they only order 3 - 4 from the line. I have gone in there a number of times to try to pick out fabrics for a quilt and ended up leaving because I couldn't put anything together nicely. It is also hard to get "inspired" there. They keep repeating the same quilt patterns only make it in different colors. One time I went in there and they had the exact same quilt pattern done in 5 different color ways. No creativity at all. What has really changed for the worst though is the staff. This quilt shop has gone from having a feeling of warmth where the staff welcomed you like family to a staff that is cold, unfriendly and just downright rude. It's as if they have no interest at all in their customers anymore, as if the staff was told not to talk to their customer unless they are getting payment for their merchandise. One staff member in particular, short with fake blond hair and fake tan, was so rude that I refuse to go unless I'm desperate. She was more concerned about answering the phone than helping me and when she cut fabric for me, instead of 18" for the half yards that I asked for, she cut the fabric 16 - 17 inches. I have given up shopping there. I would rather spend my money at a quilt shop that appreciates and takes time to know their customers. read more
