A couple of friends and I were strolling down the streets of busy Chinatown and the soho area where we came across this spot since we were looking for a sweet treat. Not only does this place have rolled ice cream, they sell bubble tea and other sweet treats like the waffle that is depicted. They initially rolled the ice cream in front of you while simultaneously cooking the waffle- and even though the waffle took longer, they made sure to put the waffle in with the cold ice cream at the same time so you get to enjoy both at the same time. My only wish is that this place was bigger and had more seats. It was the type of place that only had a wide desk that overlooked the outside and not enough seats for all of us to sit so we kind of just crowded around the menu and the display stand.

We have been making a point lately of hitting dedicated dessert spots rather than just ordering something off the restaurant menu, and this place reminded us exactly why. I went with the Crema Antica, a vanilla cream with just a slight hint of lime. It was really good. That little citrus note against the cream was subtle but it worked perfectly. Wifey enjoyed hers just as much and we both walked out happy. The vibe in there was relaxed and the staff was cool. No pretension, just good energy. The gelato itself sits somewhere between traditional gelato and ice cream, a little of both, and it landed just right. We heard the flavors rotate pretty regularly which honestly makes it worth going back just to see what is new. If we lived any closer to this place we would be in serious trouble. The kind of trouble where you tell yourself once a week and somehow end up there three times. Highly recommend making a stop if you are in the area, especially after a good meal. Skip the restaurant dessert menu and come here instead. You will not regret it.

I got a cone of the fiordilatte and on first lick there was a fine grittiness that hit my tongue,…read morethen i felt and heard it crunching/grinding between my teeth, and finally it felt scratchy in my throat as i swallowed even a small taste. I tried a bigger bite to be sure and continually experienced the unmistakable crystallization of excess lactose. I've had other ice cream in the past with excess crystallized lactose before when doing vanilla taste tests and it's distinctive and unmistakable. Apparently this is an issue particularly with Fior di latte, which may have more added dry milk solids than other flavors, which leads to undissolved crystallized lactose, and that grit is not the same as ice crystals or sugar crystals. I took about 10 more tastes hoping I'd get used to it, but no- i couldn't get past the overall impression of grit to even focus on the flavor, finally i gave up and dumped it in the trash. Maybe this was just a bad batch of fiordilatte but i won't be returning to find out.

ICENY: The rolled ice cream place that started it all for me. My husband and I first stumbled upon…read moreheaven's gate by chance when we were in Atlanta. Since then, no matter where we are, we check to see if there are rolled ice cream places in the area in hopes that it will be as good as ICENY. Currently we have tried over 8 different places in 3 different states, and have only found one that was close in terms of quality. Even so, the other place we found is double the price and not nearly as customizable. I could care less about the aesthetic, that you get to watch it be made, or the fact that it comes in cute little rolls. It is about the flavor. It is a lot less milky. I am slightly lactose intolerant and this ice cream does not upset my stomach as much as traditional ice cream. I believe there is a lot less dairy. On top of not sending me running to the rest room, the flavor is so rich. Every flavor I've gotten has tasted exactly like its name. I have eaten 3 servings in one sitting because I genuinely never want to leave. It tastes SO good. I also love to experiment with making my own and very rarely have made one I did not like. In our week in NY I made sure no matter what subway we had to take or where in the city we were, that I got to end my day with ICENY. Both the Atlanta and NY locations were consistent in terms of quality. I just found out there is one in Orlando so I will he heading up very shortly because I crave this ice cream so much it is scary.

Don't remember what I had the previous 20+ years I went there after a group dinner. This time I was influenced & specifically took a bus over for their corn ice cream. It's STILL the summer of corn. Prices are now average - good for a scoop $7.50 & the portion is good compared to other craft ice cream shops in LES. The corn flavor was good. Medium flavor with that corn sweetness. The quality of the ice cream was excellent, medium creamy & very smooth with the teeniest bit of corn blended. Sampled the hazelnut which was great also - like a thick gelato. Would like to try the lychee next time. They have probably 20 different flavors, displayed well. The staff is patient & very nice. The space is very big for a business in the East Village with mostly a waiting area. 4-5 seats are up front & they set up a few plastic chairs on the side. On a 90°F day, the shop was filled with customers & groups. A stantion at the door with directions for 2 lines would help manage things better.

Not that this soft serve and taiyaki spot is all that edgy. In fact, their semi-barricaded location at the top of a brownstone stoop looked left over from the pandemic.
