I needed some sprucing up for a life that includes working as a freelancer (read: sometimes I'm in…read morecorporate meetings, often I'm at my dining room table or Starbucks), being a mom & wife, volunteering at school, doing too many things at once, and still trying to show my creative side. Kristin first helped me discover new colors that suited me (I thought I could not wear yellow at all till Kristin pointed out I should ... and I have gotten so many compliments on my new yellow top!) and picked out so many great clothes on our shopping trip that I wound up going back to buy the ones I didn't get the first time. I was skeptical about whether a consultant would make me be too conservative, or want to put me in heels all the time (OK, in full disclosure, I think she would have liked it if I wanted to wear heels all the time ... but she was totally cool and non-pushy when I said that's not going to happen). But instead I came home with new outfits that feel -- to paraphrase the old ad tagline -- like me, only better! My husband thinks I look great, a stylish colleague compliments me every time she sees me, and even my 88-year-old grandma told me, "Those are some nice sharp jeans!" The only downside was that the new clothes looked so great, my old look seemed baggy and crappy, and so I got rid of almost everything new and sort of blew my budget ... but it's so worth it. Kristin's attitude is also so positive, professional and friendly that it was a totally unselfconscious experience to be brought up to date and into a much more attractive -- and fun -- place in my fashion life.

I went to our initial consultation and learned a ton of great information about what colors work together, what styles are in and timeless, and what ever man needs in his wardrobe. Most importantly though, how all of this applies to me. Even more important, Kristin went personal shopping for me and picked out a ton of really great stuff for me to try on. I was the Julia Roberts to her Richard Gere. I had a great time trying on things I would have never picked but looked really great. I came out of the experience with a solid base of items that work together to give me a ton of amazing combinations for anywhere from casual to dressy occasions. If I didn't move back to San Francisco, I would employ her services a few times a year. Kristin is awesome. Go with Kristin. You won't be disappointed.

I did not really have any sense of style. Rare were the days I actually felt good about getting dressed. When I was introduced to the idea of a personal stylist and actually assessed my wardrobe, I realized I seriously needed one. Confronted with the challenge of finding the right stylist, I took to Google for some in-depth research. There are plenty of stylists in Denver, but when Google connected me with The Shopping Friend I knew I had found the right place. After I filled out the style questionnaire on their website, Michelle got back to me with recommended stylists on her team based on my needs. I decided to purchase a style package that combined a closet consultation and personal shopping spree and worked directly with Michelle. The Shopping Friend uses a discovery process to get to know you, and your goals before your appointment even begins. Despite the fact that I am generally bad with new people I felt super comfortable around Michelle from the get go. She is amazingly friendly, supportive, and just an awesome person in general. It almost felt like I had known her for years. The closet consultation confirmed my fears - I did not own a single piece of clothing that actually fit me well. My clothes were communicating a bad message every time I wore them. You might think that sounds pretty dire, but Michelle is a miracle worker - I'm convinced if styling was a chess match she'd destroy Bobby Fischer ten times out of ten. After the closet consultation was finished, we spent the rest of the day on a shopping expedition at the Cherry Creek Mall. Shopping in general is something that's always been a bit of a drag on me, but with Michelle there it transformed into something truly fun. It was like shopping with your best friend, except your best friend suddenly gained complete mastery of knowledge on style. Time was flying like getting lost in a good book, except I was one of the main characters in this story. Michelle knew what looked good on me and helped me understand why certain looks were good while others just did not work for me. The clothes she found for me emphasized strong features of my body type while minimizing the weaker ones. So many things were things I normally would have even considered trying, but once I had tried them on I realized that they actually worked really well for me. In the day I spent shopping with Michelle I learned more about style than the first 26 years of my life put together. Now I notice all sorts of details I never had about other people's outfits. I feel like Neo right after he took the Red Pill in The Matrix - I have woken up to an entirely new world. By the end of the day we had built up a versatile set of basics (appropriate both personally and professionally) in a style that better communicated who I am - and we managed to get it done within the budget parameters I had set before the appointment! The results are already speaking volumes. On a personal level, for the first time in my life I'm actually excited about getting dressed in the morning. I feel so much more confident about what I'm wearing, and that confidence is starting to rub off on my mentality in other areas of life too. Reflecting on it, it's as if my old clothes were weighing down on my energy like New Jersey Mafioso had tied cinder blocks to my legs and dropped me in the Hudson River. Now I have been freed from those bonds and I'm not just out of the river, but I'm ready to climb the Empire State Building. On the first day after our excursion I wore one of my new outfits to work and pretty much every woman under the age of 40 in my office made some sort of positive comment when they saw me, completely unsolicited. I got comments ranging from 'You look super snazzy today' to 'Did you lose weight?'. And those reactions were just from an outfit that is the most basic of my new normal. I had NEVER gotten any compliments on my style prior to working with Michelle, but it is a welcome change. Investments can be scary for some people, but you'll never regret investing in yourself. Your personal style is your first wordless communication to the countless people your path crosses with every day. If you ever feel you need help finding yours, or redefining it, I would highly recommend going to The Shopping Friend to help you through that journey - regardless of if you are male or female. From my experience with them I can confidently say that they are among the best of the best at what they do. I will definitely be going back as I build out the rest of my wardrobe!
