Everything we needed was provided, so all we had to do was show up ready to learn. Lawrence gave us clear, easy-to-follow instructions that made us feel comfortable and confident in the water. We caught a ton of waves, and Lawrence was incredibly patient and encouraging throughout the lesson. He even helped my fiancée paddle out since she's much smaller, which made a huge difference and showed how attentive he is to each student's individual needs. Rosies Surf School is unlike any other of the surf schools you'll find on the North Shore. We had…read morealready been to a few other schools and, while it had always been fun, we knew that we would stick with Rosie after the first day surfing with her. Rosie is definitely a natural teacher; while she was always very patient and understanding, she knows how to push you just enough to make you progress and improve. I'm not gonna lie - Rosie will be on your ass and make sure you have the right posture and stance and obey surf etiquette on every ride. Some days it was tough but it is oh so worth it! Her way of knowing the waves and adjusting your stance allowed us to catch our own waves and make turns after only a week! Of course you can go with another school. Of course you can just rent a board and try catching your own waves like a helpless idiot and be over surfing after a couple of hours. From my experience, though, it's worth investing in a good surfing instructor like Rosie. Apart from earning you some extra understanding from the locals who can tell you're a beginner - more importantly - she knows the waves and can tell you which ones to paddle for so you don't completely spend yourself trying to go for waves you won't be able to catch as a beginner. For those of you out there who are thinking of taking up surfing, go with Rosie. She is the most patient and competent surf instructor I have gotten to know on Hawaii. Her easy-going nature and flexibility when it comes to scheduling your lesson are a major plus and if you are willing to put up with a couple of scrapes and wipe-outs and will listen to her corrections, you will be standing on those waves in no time.

Rosie coached me through all this, had very clear and explicit advice on how to overcome and unlearn bad habits and great tips on new techniques! Most importantly, she helped me to catch waves and have fun! I plan to do this for the rest of my life and I am so grateful that I got to spend a few days surfing with Rosie, absorbing her mindset and taking in as much of her advice as I can. Plus, her local knowledge is a major plus ;) She is extremely patient, a great communicator, sensitive to what waves and conditions will be best for your level and listens to what it is that you are looking for - even as she pushes you into new challenges she knows (and soon you realize, too) you can handle!
