My first class and workshop experience was great! I highly recommend doing the Zoo Lights Workshop, Joe and Scott are knowledgeable and very helpful. I felt I learned a lot from the didactic portion of the class, I was able to use new tools at the zoo and the instructors were available for help as needed. I found the critique portion to be just as helpful, learning from my personal feedback and from others as well. ***I do recommend having a basic knowledge of shutter speed/ISO/aperture before taking this course and a tripod is a must. I dropped off two rolls of film and asked for high res scans. They said it would be about five days. I went to the ups store and then drove 35 min home. I really enjoyed Joe's class. This is my second class with him and he does a great job explaining the technical aspects of photography. He is very patient and answers everyones questions. This is the 6th class I have taken from Mike's camera and they have all been wonderful. I am from Colorado and my family still lives there, but I live in Florida currently . My DSLR started getting black lines in the images it captured, so I took it into Mike's Camera a few years ago for a sensor cleaning. I paid over $100 and had to wait about 2 weeks for my camera to be sent away and cleaned. You can imagine my disappointment when my camera was returned and still had the mysterious black lines. I was so discouraged with the fruitless expense I could ill afford, I stopped using my camera for awhile. Well, I just picked my camera back up and decided it was time to solve this issue once and for all. Imagine my anger when, after some very quick internet research, I (1) learned how to easily clean the sensor myself in 10 minutes - NO reason anyone should pay $100 and wait weeks for this service - and (2) found a VERY obvious hair on the sensor that I was able to easily remove - indicating that even after the ransom payment I made to have my camera cleaned, no one actually cleaned it. TL;DR - don't pay for a sensor cleaning, do it yourself. And think twice before taking your camera here for repairs - seems they'd rather make you think your camera is unfixable so you buy a new one. read more

So happy I signed up for this class! I've looked at this class for a long time but was worried it would be above my skill level and I would be lost. I recently took the online e-commerce photography class with Joe. He packed more info into a 2-hour webinar than I've gotten in a half-day class elsewhere. He covered more than I had anticipated. Indoor product photography from tabletop to studio and how to best light your subject and why you light it a certain way; and how to photograph a product outdoors, like outdoor gear in its element. Tips, tricks, things to keep in mind, working with the quirks of brands (only the left hands of models should be in the shot for Left Hand Beer). Joe makes it very easy to understand, answers questions along the way and even does diagrams! I felt like I could go right out and do it. It was the best! read more

I have been interested in photography for around 8 years. I've had basic instruction and shoot in manual mode. Mike's offers a ton of classes and workshop that are fantastic. I did my first workshop with them a few weeks ago, the birds of prey. I came out with a lot of good photos, and had a great time. The staff is very knowledgable and helpful. Mike's Camera has been really great, overall. I understand some of the other reviewers who mentioned sometimes you can get ignored and that is unfortunate and has happened to me. They do get busy and tend to help those who are buying, not just have questions. However, for the most part I tend to walk out of there happy. I am considering my first DSLR purchase after using manual for a few years now. While I started the conversation mentioning I might just buy one from a friend or online (because it is cheaper), Mark still spent 10-15 minutes with me explaining the pros and cons of different lenses, Canon versus Nikon, etc. and at the end I felt more knowledgeable and more empowered in my DSLR choice. Then Mark even thanked me for letting him help me. Like I said, overall I leave happy. After going there a few years for products and services, I am now considering shelling out the extra $100 to buy an actual camera at their store because of all the extras they give (which works for me since I was going to have all of that done anyway). Definitely give them a try though. I agree Wolf's has better prices sometimes and I go there too. I have just found that Mike's Camera is more knowledgeable and will go the extra mile for me. read more

I want to like Mike's I really do. I really want to support local businesses. But, Mike's camera makes it really, really difficult. My typical interactions with Mike's camera goes like this. I need something for photography, a lens, a filter, a battery or a camera itself. I drive there walk in and inquire about it. 1) They don't have it or it's in another store (Never in the one I'm in) 2) They can get it here in a few days or a few weeks. 3) It's going to cost more than if I had bought it online, have less stuff with plus a sales tax premium. I get that they can't get away from sales tax and some folks don't want junk filters etc. It just adds to the frustration of dealing with them. The sales staff has been hit or miss. But, mostly miss. They are friendly and they have a good return policy. As I said I would really like to support local business but, why bother if I get incorrect parts, less "stuff" and I have to wait as long as if I had ordered it online at a reputable competitor. read more

I'm always pleased with what I buy from Mike's. This time it was my SECOND Sony Mirrorless camera. (my first was stolen out of my hotel room in Cancun). I recommend 2 things. Go to Mike's and go to Tom Davis - you'll be happy with both. I also recommend the Sony mirrorless. It's small, clear and responsive (enough) for what I use it for. 2 Reminders: Always lock your valuables in your hotel safe, and always zip your camera packs when traveling (especially in Italy and where gypsies are known to venture). read more

The Denver Zoo workshop was terrific. Instructors Scott and Joe are excellent in presenting the class both online and in the field. Whether you are relatively new to this type of photography or you are advanced in your practice, this is well worth the time. The workshop was in three parts with the first an online webinar going over basic shooting knowledge, camera gear, and techniques for getting good pics at a zoo. On location, Scott and Joe gave instructions and tips regarding positioning, lighting, composition, and camera settings. The third session was an online webinar offering a critique of photos taken by each participant. We were asked to submit two pics each and it was interesting to see the results of each participants efforts and the suggestions from Scott and Joe. This is my second Mike's workshop and I highly recommend taking one that interests you. When you can, please support them and other local businesses. I'm a customer at their Denver store and couldn't be more pleased with the service I receive. They are always available for advice and are a big help in getting me the right gear. read more

I took their Denver Zoo Lights 3 part class. It was a wonderful experience. I learned how to shoot some wonderful photos. I also learned some fantastic skills. The hands on part off the night was my favorite and most necessary piece. I loved having someone near by that was able to help me when my shots were not what I wanted them to be. Friendly, knowledgeable staff! There are all kind of ways of printing photos available here. Everything from metal to glass to canvas. If you want high quality camera gear or binoculars etc, it's the best in town. You can also get a passport photo here and they will redo it at no extra charge if you don't like the way the photo looks! read more
