The ranking was based on a total of $10,481,924 million in awards (direct plus indirect costs were included, R & D contracts were not). Dr. Larsen, Dr. Andrew Adams, Dr. Mandy Ford, Dr. Yang, Dr. Rachel Patzer, and Dr. Craig Coopersmith placed in the top 100 NIH-funded, department of surgery-based principal investigators. Dr. Luke Brewster was also highly ranked.

Dr. Staley's clinical practice focuses on surgical treatment of stomach, esophageal, appendiceal, colorectal, pancreas, liver cancer, and peritoneal surface malignancies. His research focuses on translational studies and novel clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancers. He has investigated gene therapy for metastatic colon cancer, radiofrequency ablation with intra-arterial chemotherapy for patients with colorectal liver metastases, and neoadjuvant chemoradiation with the goal of maximizing sphincter preservation in the treatment of rectal cancer. His current investigations include exploring methods of using nanotechnology to diagnose and treat pancreatic and breast cancer with such colleagues as Dr. Lily Yang.
