Best Bakmi I've ever tasted!
This is your typical Indonesian restaurant, so I have to warn you before hand this is more or less a self-service restaurant which is typical of Indonesian restaurants. You sit down, are handed a menu and a docket and you fill in what you'd like to order and provide the "waiter" with the completed order docket. They bring out the food once it's ready. Don't forget to get your own water, drinks, cutlery and any other snacks you may want. There is a self-service area that sometimes has delicious kroket (Indonesian style croquettes) and risoles (Indonesian style risolles), these are at room-temperature but can be heated up for you upon request. They are served with delicious peanut spicy sauce.
The reason I come here is purely alone for the bakmi. To the uninitiated bakmi is a Chinese influenced Indonesian noodle dish. The noodles are of a chewy-springy consistency and unlike any other type of noodle you have eaten before. The winning dish is the "Yamien" dish, I order this and it's topped with vegetables and chicken and served dry. A bowl of chicken soup is provided and you can add as much or as little soup as you like to get the consistency right. Add some delicious chilli sauce and you're good to go.
I like to order my bakmi with a side of pangsit goreng (fried wontons) which add the necessary crunch to this dish.
Like I said don't expect service with a smile, but expect some delicious bakmi noodles. I've been all over Indonesia (Jakarta and Bandung) and have yet to taste any noodles that are as delicious as this. Mie Kocok Bandung in Maroubra is still my reference point for the best bakmi noodles. I'd give this place a 5 if the owner just smiled a bit more :) read more
