I never thought I would write a Yelp review of my former high school. In my opinion, my high school years were not very eventful but I still have very fond memories of this place and people I was hanging out with (I still hang out with the same group of people today). I don't know how well academically they are doing these days but back then, Midwood was one of the top non-specialized high schools, which means it wasn't one of the elite public high schools that you had to take entrance exams (i.e., Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech). It became extremely popular ever since they had a handful of students who made it into the Intel Westinghouse Finals, which even surpassed the number of finalists from Stuy. I even remember the New York Times Magazine made a publication dedicated to the group of winners. It was a BIG bragging rights thing for us. Of course, as the school became more popular, it became overcrowded. The hallways were always difficult to navigate through during recess and at times, there were not enough space to hold all the students in the same class.
The school was diverse as much as I could recall. You have a mix crowd of students coming from all the city but as expected, students form their own cliques. I have to say my favorite classes were Chemistry, Beginner's Band, and Latin. I had an amazing teacher from Chemistry (can't recall his name) but of all science-related classes I've taken at Midwood, I aced at Chemistry and enjoyed every experiment I had to work on. Beginners Band and Latin were kind of a joke but were fun because of my classmates and quirky teachers I had (Ecce Romani!).
Oh yes, hornets! I wasn't part of any sports activity but we also had a pretty good handball and wrestling teams. Ahh memories! read more
