My husband and I were pregnant with our first child and weren't sure we wanted to do a home birth. We agreed we'd meet with Cheryl and ask questions, and we wouldn't go for it unless we both felt certain is was right. After meeting initially with Cheryl, we both were certain that we wanted not only a home birth, but her to be the midwife who helped prepare us and ultimately help us bring our son into the world. Thought there are a million reasons we'd recommend her, ill name a few big ones here: 1. Resourceful: Cheryl knows what she's talking about. She is a constant learner and goes above and beyond what is required for her CPM. Our questions were met with well thought out answers and we felt much more confident as we made our decisions on things like cord clamping, vaccinations, etc. 2. Compassionate: Cheryl cares deeply for her clients. She was a great support, and helped us process emotionally as we prepared for our birth...I hadn't anticipated that on top of our typical prenatal care. 3. Assertive: She is direct in the best way. Enough said. 4. She helps you through the waiting: i was 18 past my baby's "due date" and it was very hard. I was met with a lot of discouragement and opposition from others and Cheryl was a contact source of encouragement as we stuck to our plan to wait. 5. I have had 3 babies at hospitals, one at a birth center and my 5th one I had a home birth with Cheryl. My home birth was my favorite experience, I enjoyed being able to labor in the comfort of my own home and have a large tub to deliver my baby and have a great midwife by my side. Ok, I'm writing this on behalf of my wife, and, of course, from my own experience from working with Cheryl. Our 2-week-old baby girl is currently asleep at the house, and I'm at my office, so I have the time to write this :) Firstly, I'm completely gobsmacked that someone would give her a 1-star rating, especially since the stated reason seems to be demeanor mismatch (which, by the way, is completely opposite of what we experienced). I urge you to disregard that rating completely. We were recommended to Cheryl via our doula (who was with us from a previous birth), and we were COMPLETELY THRILLED that we used her. She is a delight as a person, and I know for a fact that my wife felt extremely cared for, supported, and expertly assisted. Cheryl is both highly-knowledgeable about natural approaches to various infant issues and pregnancy concerns (which is a *very* big deal to us), but takes a scientific approach which doesn't completely rule out allopathic options (even though we often tend to rule those out by principle, ourselves). In short, she is extremely competent, experienced and GREAT at what she does. But even more so (and I feel the need to say this because of the previous reviewer), she has become a friend. We now have six children, and our experience with her is such that we are wishing that we had used her services previously, before this birth. She is compassionate, spiritually mature and attuned, as well as cheerful and calm during a crisis. Lastly, our girl had a small respiratory issue right at the moment of birth, but Cheryl and her birthing assistant handled it in such a way that my wife and I had no idea that they, in fact, were actually a bit concerned for a moment. All was celebratory, and we knew not that she had to perform interventions that she (much later) told us occur in only about 10% of births. But all was quickly well, and our baby is doing beautifully. Our home birth was simply amazing with her, and she is truly a wonderful person. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. read more

Cheryl has been my midwife through both of my home births for my daughters, who are now 3.5 and 2 y/o. I remember the first time I met Cheryl. I was drawn to her calm, confident demeanor. I felt comfortable around her; her genuineness, her expertise in all things pregnancy and birth, her ability to act professionally, discuss business while also showing compassion and just being real. Throughout both pregnancies, I knew I could call or text her and ask anything and she would be 100% upfront with me. She is not someone to mince words or exaggerate or hesitate when it really matters. She will say exactly what she means and mean exactly what she says. But that doesn't mean she doesn't care or have compassion for her clients. She has given birth naturally to all her children as well as attended hundreds of births, so she knows what a birthing woman needs. She is empathetic and because of this, she made me feel more comfortable during both my labors. When there was a slight emergency during my first birth, baby's heart rate slowed drastically, she knew exactly what to do, took charge, told me how to change position, and encouraged me all at the same time. I trusted Cheryl; during both labors, I had confidence in her ability to take charge when it was needed and to make the call when/if something were to go awry. I appreciated her reinforcement of a healthy diet throughout my pregnancy and her sternness during my prenatal appointments to make diet, exercise, and rest top priority. She paid close attention to detail regarding any bloodwork I had done and tests that were needed. Based on my experience and my knowledge of midwifery, the general idea is that the laboring mother is allowed the freedom to do, say, and control what is going on within reason as long as baby and mother are safe and the labor is progressing - a far cry from the medical and hospital approach. If you want more freedom during labor and a natural approach to pregnancy and birth as well as a home (and/or water) birth, then Cheryl is your gal. I have no regrets!!! read more

I found Cheryl via website when googling "midwives in the Kansas city area". All I have to say that she is worth every penny and more. Cheryl is VERY resourceful, always professional, yet personable. She always made me feel as if I'm the only patient she is working with. I can call her or text her at anytime, and her responses were so prompt. Being a new mom I had no clue what to expect. She held my hand along the way to the very moment my water broke. I had my baby 2.5 weeks early, and Cheryl stepped in and went to WORK. I have never seen a person unpack a birth kit, inflate a pool, put on gloves, and cowl in a small space to deliver a baby as fast and as efficient as her. In addition, she also coached me in my breathing and she was so calm. She made my dream of having a home birth come true. We chose Cheryl as the midwife to assist in our second child's water, home-birth. We found her to be knowledgeable on birth as well as pregnancy health. She was very professional as well as friendly and communicated very well when she had to move my appointments because of other births. She prepared me very well for the birthing process. We have used Cheryl for two births (babies #4 & #5 for our family). These two have been the best birth experiences! With baby #4, our labor stalled at one point because the baby was not in a good position. Cheryl had so many ideas for labor positions to get the baby to turn and it worked! Once the baby turned his head, we pushed and he was out. I truly think her knowledge saved us from having a c-section. With baby #5, our birth progressed very rapidly. I was so pleased that she let my husband be my primary support person and did not hinder us with interventions. We had an amazing water birth that was unforgettable. I think Cheryl really understands birth and her role in assisting moms. She knew when I needed help and when I was progressing great on my own. I have to say that I was extremely disappointed with Cheryl Gilman from Midwife KC. At the birth we found her very unattached and distant. She never really communicated with me about how things were and was a silent statue with little to no support for the birth. I felt very alone through the whole process. I am sad that I cannot recommend Cheryl as I was very hopeful for a happy and supported birth with her, even just a little encouragement would have gone a long way. read more
