It has been 8 weeks since they received the shipment and no check no transfer of money. Called and they say they are waiting for a buyer. I will call again tomorrow. Something changed with this company for sure. Hmmm let me see there are over a million buyers of sterling for computer needs in the world right now. I used these guys for over 10 years here and there and service was good. The owner retired and his Son in law takes over and moves to FLORIDA. I sent them some gold on 2/23/26 it arrived on 2/26/26. NO CHECK, NO EMAIL, I've sent them an email 3 days ago and no answer. Will not do business with them again, do not recommend. I will be sending them a summons and complaint. I've dealt with Midwest refineries for years when they were in Waterford, After the owner retired and gave it to his corrupt son-in-law, they started lying and stealing profit. They rip you off but not as badly as your local coin dealer IMHO. I sold them some scrap jewelry, and in the receipt, if you actually look at their numbers, in my case it was about 20% less. The biggest disparity was in their conversion from "gross" weight to "pure gold" weight based on the karat purity. They were off by 20%. (This was an outright purchase of a few jewelry items that didn't require assaying so there were no assay losses). Don't do it. These folks are not honest and cheat you on every point they can. I've used them twice, and both times the details on the return invoice were scant, and what was there was outright wrong. I don't know what other reviewers are claiming they received detailed invoices, as mine was neither detailed nor accurate. I had three categories of gold sent in: 10K, 14K, and a gold dental crown. Their invoice lumped them all together, claiming all was about 10K. I sent in a total of 48.53 grams of 10k & 14k gold (mostly 14k), they claimed they received 45.072grams. What I sent in was as follows: 21.56g @ 10k 23.4g @ 14k 3.57g @ gold dental crown They claim all of it was 10k, or just slightly higher, and they claimed the total amount of pure gold contained was 20.658 grams when it was at least 24 grams. At 95% payout at a spot price of $1995, they should have paid $1469.97, but only paid $1250(coincidentally a round number, eh!?) A difference of right at $220. That yields a payout of 80.78%, and not 95%. So their claimed payout of 95% is a lie. I'd hope to see a class action lawsuit against these crooks, but I'm not holding my breath. Look elsewhere for your refining needs. read more

I sent them 4 ounces platinum wire. Before I did that I had it tested elsewhere but turned them down because of a low return. He told me it was copper wiring. He flat out lied and told me to send him 25 dollars to get it back. I sent the money but still haven't received my wiring back yet. Don't use them. They will cheat you! read more

Have used them a couple of times. Both times the amounts were over 1k dollars. Their numbers seem to be spot on. They seem to be fair with their calculations. They know what they are doing. I believe they actually pay more then most places. Its nice to know your getting treated fair when you send someone your gold. Turnaround was pretty fast to I had a check within the week. I too was a victim of Midwest Refineries. I sent them (16.9 total grams of gold jewelry) on May 29, 2024, the following as a test to determine if I could trust them with future precious metals shipments: 7.5 grams marked solid 18k; 1.4 grams marked solid 14K gold; and 8.0 grams 10K. Spot gold was 2317 troy ounce. I was expecting to receive a check from Midwest Refineries for $675 approximately but the amount I received was only $550.00. Midwest's invoice indicated they had not melted my gold down nor assayed it properly using standard XRF. Their invoice indicated they had estimated the entire weight at just 12 karat but gave no reason for the karat downgrade which from my own calculation averaged the karat at 13.7K for my 16.9 grams. It is possible someone at Midwest did not factor in that I sent in 7.5 grams of 18K gold and calculated my low payout as if the 18K gold I sent in was only 14K. I observed many parties on the internet complaining they too were victims of similar short changing by Midwest Refineries. This cheating appears to be a pattern occurring over and over again. I tested all the gold I sent them using acid. I am very good at gold acid testing and I always make sure I test accurately every time. I understand that their claim to charge only a 5% refining fee for gold scrap is very low so I was even okay with receiving a check as low as $635 - $650 given the inflationary stresses on businesses today but the additional $125.00 they stole is simply exorbitant! I probably could have gotten what they paid me from a crooked mall kiosk "cash for gold" buyer or local sleazy jewelry shop. I notified the BBB of Michigan about my negative experience with Midwest Refineries, LLC. If my shortfall is explained or corrected I will update this Yelp review. read more

They called to let me know a few of the things I sent were not silver, understanding that the ordinary citizen can't always tell, and asked what I wanted them to do; I had them toss them, I suppose they would have -- and should have -- deducted the price of return shipping from what they paid for the good stuff had I wanted them back, but in any case I appreciated being offered the choice. I spent a long time looking for a business that would refine and sell precious metals. I called places all over the USA (NY, CA, OR, OH, WI, MI, FL, TX, etc.) over the course of a few months, and all either only dealt with businesses who did reclaim (jewelers, pawn shops, etc.), or their rates were not at all competitive/they refused to publish their rates. Midwest Refineries LLC is very transparent on their website about what you get. There's no "send it to us and we will let you know", you can assess well ahead of time what you will get based on what you send, assuming you have a rough idea what it is you're sending. No games no hidden agenda, transparent policies and fast service. This will be my fourth shipment to Midwest Refineries, and there will be more. One needs to educate themselves before committing to a precious metal reclaim. There is a lot of bad information out there and commercials that set up unrealistic expectations. One needs to be practical when doing their due diligence. read more

I've used this refinery for a few years now, and my experiences have varied. The last experience has left me wanting to switch to using another refinery, and happily have found one that I believe is more scrupulous. One poor experience included sending two types of precious metals in, along with my itemized statement and weights of what was included in my package. When I received my check (quite promptly) they had not given me anything for the sterling silver they kept and melted down. Nothing. I immediately inquired and was told it was "so little" they didn't feel it was worth adding to the check. Really? Keeping my items and not paying for it is called theft. I demanded they pay me and they eventually agreed to add it to my next check. It may have only been another $10.00 - but why should they keep $10.00 that is mine? How is that honest? There have been several other times where the calculations I have done do not square with the very sparse info they provide with their checks. My latest check was significantly lower than it should have been, so I asked for the calculations that gave them the totals I was given. If what I was told is true, they are so incredibly "conservative" (to use their own term) that they are benefitting their own pockets at the customer's expense. They make assumptions that you are not sending what you know you are sending (I test everything I send) and then make "guesses" at what they will lose when melted....not a remotely accurate process and one that means they are keeping a higher percentage than they represent on their website.. I believe you can do better elsewhere. If you are just looking for a prompt payout, they are good about sending checks quickly. I'd rather wait a few more days and get my full payment. read more

Well I had done business with this company for a long time, and never had a problem. However, I sent in my gold filled scrap, my mistake, to this company and they sent me $25 for a huge bag. I called very upset that I felt robbed and was yelled at by a woman who said they pay 7% of one pound on gold filled wire, and that it is right there on her website. Really? I looked at the home page, where it lists that gold content of an item will be paid at 95%. It doesn't say except gold filled wire. She led me down that long page, to a small link, that then led me to another page, and at the bottom of THAT page, it did say what she said, but it also says on the main page in RED, with NO link to her little clause that there are any different rules for gold fill. I told her this is a discrepancy, and she is contradicting herself, and I didn't see on page 3 at the bottom that she was going to rob me. Ugh I will never do business with them again. she proceeded to tell me my business was so nominal that it didn't matter anyway. Okay I am sure you aren't making anything on the scrap I send you, that is why you are in business, right? Cause you are losing money by people with small amts of scrap....Anyway, I got $25 for 8oz of gold filled wire.....hm. Interesting. I wish I had known, I would have made more sending it to Rio for 65% payout.....Oy. We recently heard about Midwest Refineries on the Bogleheads forum and decided to try selling some of our gold jewelry through them. We didn't have very much, but figured it was better than letting jewelry we will never wear sit around and collect dust. They received our package on Saturday, and by Thursday we had our check. I sent them my Sterling silver flatware set with a statement noting the weight as measured by me. This was my first time doing business with them and honestly I felt like it was a leap of faith. I had calculated fairly precisely, based on what the lady told me over the phone, what I could expect in terms of percentage of mass lost during the pour and the final purity. I have sent in 3 different groups of silver and/or gold - mostly jewelry and silverware (not the filled stuff). Their website is a little convoluted at times but they are very clear about what they take in and what they pay and I was pleasantly surprised with the returns - far, far better than going to those "Cash for Gold" places. I believe that some people think that the actual weight of a piece of silver and/or jewelry is exactly the weight in gold - if you research on the internet you will see that most jewelry is filled with something and it's rarely 100% pure. I have complete faith in this company and would definitely use them again if I ever get a large set of silverware. I also commend them for taking the time to call me when I sent things in that didn't meet their criteria. I attempted to learn how to test the metals but it's a difficult thing to do and I was not always right! :) read more

This company's website is plastered with language that suggests they actually test your materials, such as claims that they have "gold analytical services" and they are a top google result for dental gold assay (a type of testing). Nevertheless, when you call to ask them if they do that, apparently they "do not do that." Not sure if I'd trust a place that goes out of its way to exaggerate what they can do. read more

You need to really know what you're doing with this company. It cost me $45 ($20 for shipping and $25 for "processing") for them to RETURN to me the items they didn't like-okay, I looked the silver flatware over before I sent it, but apparently I didn't know how to test thoroughly if some of it was silver plate versus sterling, and so some of what I sent was apparently silver plate. And Gary at Midwest was very rude to me, both in his phone messages and during our call-said it cost them money to process my "Junk," and "Garbage." Unless you already know what you're doing, you risk losing money with them-it's not as if you could go to their place and ask them about items, whether they're silver or not. It's clear they don't care about the small customer. Avoid them unless you're a professional. read more

First they reported less weight than I sent,(not by much, but less) then claimed 4% loss after melt down, then claimed 2% less in assay of the silver,(92.5 to 90.015), then claim that my troy ounces at this point are 14.301 less than the original weight, then claim that of this weight 90% is payable, so we have lost another 9.86 troy ounces, the market price was not the closing price for silver on the day ,but the lowest amount that silver hit during the day. Resulting in a .30 difference in market price. DO NOT EXPECT TO GET WHAT YOU FIGURE AT HOME! The company rec'd. my package of just over 8 lbs. of silver, and I had to call them after 4 days to check on status, only to be told that my silver was received and a check issued the same day. I think they should discuss settlement with you before they just assume you are good with whatever amount they send you. I feel as though I am out about 200.00 in this transaction, after figuring with exactly what they post on their website. BAD EXPERIENCE!!!! read more

I've had over 40 shipments that I have sent to Midwest Refineries. The person complaining about getting so little for gold-filled wire has a screw loose. I'm surprised they gave him anything. I didn't think they would take it at all. It's a holy pain in the neck to separate the gold out from base metal. The first thing one needs to do is educate one's self. And this person certainly did not. In my first shipment to Midwest, I sent them some nickel silver thinking, well nickel is a coin so it must be coin silver. WRONG. Not one little bit of real silver in nickel silver. But they were very nice about it, offered to send it back, etc. Over the years, I have had nothing but fast service (ten days or less from mailing to check in hand) and approximately the amount I was expecting from the shipment--I know how to figure that now. Yeah, there is a gal there who has a gravelly voice and sounds acerbic at times, but she and her colleagues at Midwest are the best professionals you are ever going to find in this business. I tried another refinery early on just to compare -- it took 3 weeks to get a check and then they sent it to the wrong address (transposed some numbers). By the way, I'm just an individual with occasional business for them, not a large-scale customer. read more
