We enrolled our student in Turning Point Christian and we were displeased with the quality of education and the demeanor of the school. My advice to parents is to give considerable thought to educational objectives prior to enrolling a child in TPA. The quality of instruction is substandard at best, while dogma and pettiness on the part of some administrators is alive and well. Our student, a six grader, with commended performance in public schools and charter schools on TAKS math and science and slightly above average grades (and never unsatisfactory marks in citizenship) received failing marks and poor citizenship in all subjects while attending TPA. Bible was the only subject she received a passing grade (80). Moreover, I doubt if teachers and administrators had a clue as to rubrics and standards required by accredited private schools. To reiterate, our student who is slightly above grade level for a sixth grader, was assigned a grade 9 science text, a grade 8 language arts text, no social studies textbook and a grade 6 math textbook where instruction began on page 289 of an approximate 350 page textbook. Consequently, we spent many of our evenings explaining math concepts to our student which never appeared to have been addressed in the class. Also, after reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" (grade 7 or above for advanced readers), our student wrote a paper on Jim Crow (a major theme of Harper Lee) only to have the head administrator throw her paper at her in from of classmates with the comment, "We don't discuss race in this school !" If this was indeed the case, why in the world were students reading a book which primarily deals with racial issues? The following assigned reading was "The Scarlett Letter," (grade 9 or 10) was just to advance for a sixth grader. The smartest thing we did while at TPA, was to remove our student once we realized our concerns were falling on death ears. The facility is family ran with many students consisting of family members and close family friends. Parents concerned primarily with academic achievement in lieu of never ceasing religious indoctrination are ostracized and made to feel very unwelcomed by some of the family members' children--especially if ones' religious views differ from those of TPA administrators. In my opinion, TPA is for families and students interested in religion as their main focus. So that it is clear, there are some fine Christian schools in Desoto. However, in reviewing our experience, Turning Point Christian Academy is certainly NOT one of them.
