The Middle Country School District continues to show a disappointing lack of seriousness when it comes to addressing bullying--especially when the bully is a female student. It's time the district recognizes that girls can be bullies too.
Another issue was regarding Ms. Kristina Pitera, an assistant principal at Selden middle school. It is completely inappropriate for a teacher to insert themselves into a student's personal life by commenting on who they can or can't date. What makes this situation even more concerning is that, in doing so, the teacher tore down my son in the process. A professional educator should never belittle or make negative remarks about a student, especially when discussing something as personal as relationships. This kind of behavior not only crosses personal boundaries but also damages a student's self-esteem and trust in the adults who are supposed to support them.
Adding to the inappropriateness of the situation, the teacher also disclosed in our meeting something a student had personally shared with her guidance counselor--information that was clearly meant to remain confidential. She used this private detail in an attempt to justify or counter the inappropriate conversation she had about my son with another student. This is a serious breach of student privacy and trust, and it raises concerns about the teacher's professionalism and judgment. Sharing confidential guidance information to defend her own misconduct only highlights how deeply inappropriate and damaging her actions were, both to my son and the students involved.
This school district has been nothing but disappointing, leaving me feeling completely hopeless in my efforts to have my voice and concerns truly heard. Time and time again, I've advocated for my son's well-being--only to be met with indifference, deflection, or decisions that show a clear lack of understanding and accountability. Instead of feeling supported as a parent, I'm left frustrated and disheartened, watching my child endure mistreatment while those in positions of power minimize or ignore the very real issues he's facing. It's disheartening to see a system that's supposed to protect and uplift students doing the exact opposite. read more
