Rutland's Midas continues to give me EXCELLENT service. I'm a retired ASE Master Technician, repair shop owner, Dealership Parts Manager and a few more "careers" in my 68+ years. I did ALL my vehicle service that wasn't warranty repair until I was no longer physically able. I continue to trust Brent, Rich, Dexter and all the folks at Rutland's Midas with doing those things I used to be able to do, confident that it's done to my standards. I've read some of the negative reviews here and find that a) there are some people who seem to only post "one star" reviews of any/all businesses they feel are doing no more than just trying to make a living, b) feel that they're being "overcharged" because they can pick up a part at a "big box" cheaper than what they are being charged and neither understanding nor willing to accept that businesses are in business to make money and not give stuff away. You don't expect a restaurant to serve you a 3 egg breakfast for what you can buy 3 eggs for at the supermarket and still provide a warranty on the parts AND LABOR as well as the liability insurance that must be carried and the overhead of maintaining a facility, etc., etc. As one formerly in the industry, I can tell you that the "standard margin" on parts in the auto repair business is 50% meaning the selling price is, typically, twice the cost... a part that costs $50.00 will sell for $100.00. Anything less and you should consider yourself having received a discount. So, my hearty recommendation, if you want HONEST, DEPENDABLE and KNOWLEDGEABLE service is that this is one of the few places in Rutland that I can recommend, based on first-hand experiences over the past two decades. Sure, read the reviews then consider the above. Look at the reviewers profile and see how they've rated other places. I cannot say enough good things about Midas in Rutland, VT. I have finally found the most trustworthy mechanic shop EVER!!! I had an ABS repair, oxygen sensor repair, synthetic oil change and an inspection and it was $300.00 LESS than the place I have been taking my car to for just the ABS repair!! 1) They performed services I haven't authorized. I brought the car in for exhaust repair. I specifically instructed them in writing not to perform the state inspection until that repair is done. That repair was not done that day because the parts needed to be ordered. Yet, I was billed for inspection. I do not know why I was billed for an inspection, that I asked NOT to be done, unless repairs, I acknowledged that needed to be done, were completed. I was also, actually, billed for the "state sticker" as a part received, but I did not find the sticker affixed to my windshield. I should not be asked to pay for parts not received. I did not even realize I was billed for inspection until I reviewed the bill at home. 2) Furthermore, I was overcharged for parts. For one allegedly bad rubber bushing, they changed an entire control arm. I paid $182.24 for part #522-832. Another top rating. A month ago I had deferred some maintenance that Rich's crew found and estimated at the time - a rear U joint, it was obvious on account of the vibration when accelerating. The OEM design called for new drive shaft upon replacement which would have been costly. The Midas team found another solution to send the original parts to a local 3rd party machine shop to be fixed and reinstalled costing a mere fraction of the original estimate. I needed snow tires on short notice and they were able to get me right in! The service was great and the people were very pleasant!

Do not go for inspection! I wasn't able to schedule an appointment for inspection at the dealership and they said they would allow me a walk in appointment. They told me I needed extensive work with an estimate of 900$ to get it to pass. They said I had surface rust on break lines that needed replacment, the wrong caliper on one the front breaks needed replacement, all the break pads were almost worn down, slight yellowing on headlights and rear license plate light. I went to the dealership where it is usually serviced and they inspected it after replacing just the license plate light. They explained that while there was surface rust on the break lines it was only cosmetic, the caliper was original equipment, my break pads likely had more than 10-15k left on them and the headlights were fine. Apparently from what the dealership guy has heard, many places like Midas are using the new state inspection regulations as a way to gain more business. Awful experience will not ever recommend. Paid for my inspection in April was pushed to get wipers fixed and lights buffed... wasn't told how much it would be until it was done. I was then charged 60 to clean my head lights!? Outrageous. Was told couldn't inspect until I went to my dealer to get something fixed that was under warranty then I could come back and get my sticker. When I came back 3 weeks later after having to drive 1.5hrs to get that fixed I was told now I needed something else fixed even though the other person I had spoke too said my ball joint still had play and I could wait. This guy said well sorry, I already marked it in the computer so now you have to fix it or you don't get your sticker. They wanted to charge me almost 300$ for something they told me last time was fine for now. I was told if I get THAT fixed I can come back and get my sticker. I saved up the money, got it fixed and went back.... this time he tells me, I'll give you a sticker but you have to pay for it again because you took too long to get it fixed. I'm thoroughly pissed off because that's something they should have told me before. Not just get it fixed and come back. He should have said get it fixed and be back by this many days. I suddenly had a big oil leak, so I went to Midas and told them. They got me in literally a minute later for an oil change and to investigate. Thankfully it was just a loose filter, but the way they jumped on it was so nice. They were friendly and helpful and price was reasonable. read more

We brought our Nissan Rogue in for a state inspection and it passed with no problem. I specifically asked if the brakes were good because I thought it was starting to make a noise. I do not know much about cars so I depend on the knowledge of an honest mechanic. He assured me that the breaks were fine at 82% so I went home. Three weeks later it started making a harsh metal on metal sound so we made an appointment and brought it back. We were told we need all new brakes and new rear rotors. There is no way we wore down 82% of our brakes down to the rotors in just three weeks. This brings me to the conclusion that nobody ever looked at our brakes. This is the most unsafe inspection you can get. When we showed them the paperwork from the inspection they refused to take responsibility. We will never go back. I was traveling from out of state and realized I had a tire that was not road worthy. On the recommendation of a local friend I called Midas. They got the tires I needed and had me scheduled within a day of the call. Throughout the wait while they were installing new tires and doing an alignment the kept me informed of progress. Went to get a state inspection. I left the vehicle with them for the day. I received a call from the manager stating they could not do the inspection due to needing a complete brake job. They said they would turn the rotors and put new pads on for $680. ((WOW THAT"S EXPENSIVE) Pads are only $48 and the rotors are $26 each NEW. You do the math.) I told them to button up the vehicle and I would be down to pick it up. The next day I brought the vehicle to the dealer where they did the inspection with no mention of brakes being needed. When you walk into Midas in Rutland and are greeted by your first name, you know you are a good customer. I usually try to patronize privately opened businesses, but when my heater stopped working several cold winters ago , I stopped at Midas. Allie checked my car, said it was only a blown fuse, replaced it and didn't even charge me. Because of that , Even though I live in NYC, I wait to have all my repairs and maintenance performed by the very capable, professional and HONEST team there. Several times when I had no ride back to home , Midas gave me a ride. Amazing. When parts of my brakes failed they had installed due to bad weather, Midas replaced them free under warranty. No fighting or arguing. Just fantastic customer service. Today I brought my car in because I thought the brakes were failing again. Nope. Just some ice and a guard scraping the tires. Again. No charge. They could have said you need new brakes. I wouldn't have known better. I can't say enough about how Brent, Richard and Allie take wonderful care of my car, and every mechanic there knows their job. Even under these stressful Covid times. Great place. ! DON'T TRUST THE MIDAS TOUCH! I was given an estimate of $320 (worst case scenario) for a brake job. Bill came in at $520! I dropped my car off at 10:45 am for an inspection because they told me they had time to do it. I got caught up with work and realized that it was 4:00 pm and I hadn't heard from anyone about my car. I called and they said that they couldn't find a part. why did it take me calling, FIVE hours later, for them to ask?!? furthermore, I called back TWO hours later after telling them where this part was, and they said they couldn't find it. AGAIN, why do I have to call?!? isn't that supposed to be part of customer service?? finally I said that I will just come get my car and I will be there in 5 minutes. I got to the shop and the service person said, "oops, my fault, they're not done with your car yet." seriously?!?! what a horrible place! what kind of 'business' are you running here?!?!? I have now been sitting here waiting for over 1/2 hour.. who knows how much longer I'll be here. this place is bull****!!!
