Took my car there for a loud clunk in the front end. It was a consistent noise that occurred over…read moreevery single bump in the road. They said it was ball joints which was about a $1200 fix. I said that if they were sure this was the issue, go ahead with the fix. Also needed an alignment afterwards. Once the ball joints were replaced I asked if the loud clunk was resolved. They said it was all fixed, no noise. My wife picked up the vehicle and brought it home. I drove it the next morning. The clunk was still there, clear and present just as it was before. It'a one thing to misdiagnose, but another altogether to tell a customer that it's all fixed when it obviously isn't. Poor diagnostics and poor integrity on this one.

The salesman after listening to my analysis looked me in the eye and said, "What you need, we ain't got!" to which I responded with, "What do I need?" He responded with, "What you need is Carroll Buffum." After learning how to find Carroll and getting my vehicle to him I was astounded by his wisdom, fairness and price. I drove away happily and have not been to a different mechanic since. Carroll is calling it quits in a few months and has sold his business after 44 years of dedicated help to his community. I dropped my 2000 Ranger off today with a blown engine. Likely installing a new rebuilt for me will be one of Carrolls last jobs. I did ALL my vehicle service that wasn't warranty repair until I was no longer physically able. I continue to trust Brent, Rich, Dexter and all the folks at Rutland's Midas with doing those things I used to be able to do, confident that it's done to my standards. I've read some of the negative reviews here and find that a) there are some people who seem to only post "one star" reviews of any/all businesses they feel are doing no more than just trying to make a living, b) feel that they're being "overcharged" because they can pick up a part at a "big box" cheaper than what they are being charged and neither understanding nor willing to accept that businesses are in business to make money and not give stuff away. You don't expect a restaurant to serve you a 3 egg breakfast for what you can buy 3 eggs for at the supermarket and still provide a warranty on the parts AND LABOR as well as the liability insurance that must be carried and the overhead of maintaining a facility, etc., etc. As one formerly in the industry, I can tell you that the "standard margin" on parts in the auto repair business is 50% meaning the selling price is, typically, twice the cost... a part that costs $50.00 will sell for $100.00. Anything less and you should consider yourself having received a discount. So, my hearty recommendation, if you want HONEST, DEPENDABLE and KNOWLEDGEABLE service is that this is one of the few places in Rutland that I can recommend, based on first-hand experiences over the past two decades. Sure, read the reviews then consider the above. Look at the reviewers profile and see how they've rated other places. There's some people who just can't ever be satisfied that the world isn't out to get them. lol.
