The place is under new ownership and management and it shows. I went in because my JEEP was having problems turning over and starting. I was farily sure there was a problem with the battery, the starter or the alternator. I went in thinking I'd be on the hook for $100-$300 that day. They ran every diagnostic test available for free and told me there was no problem, that I should be careful about key's position as I was starting my JEEP. I've never gone to a car repair shop where they don't try to charge me for invented problems. This place didn't. I was so impressed with their honesty that i went back for my yearly tune-up. I dropped my car at midas for inspection . They called me the next day said they need to change my inner tire rod which will cost $400+ Or they won't pass the inspection for me.I don't believed that. So I got my car and drove to pepboys to do the inspection again! They quickly checked everything and told me I don't need to change anything and just pass the inspection! ! I brought my car in for an oil change and state inspection. They called an told me the rear brakes needed to be adjusted so I gave them to OK to adjust them. The first time I drove my car after this check-up the rear cylinders blew, resulting in total loss of brake function. The mechanic that my car was towed to said that Midas had over tightened my brakes, which likely lead to the loss in brake function. Not only were the employees negligent but they put my life and the lives of everyone else on the road in danger. Do not bring your car here. read more

Bad service! Had my truck in for service early Saturday morning at 8am. Was told that my car would be in the garage within 30min. Gave the keys and went to take care of some business just knowing that when I came back, the truck would be done unless I got a call stating that there were other issues which may take longer. After returning almost 2 hours later, I noticed the truck still in the same spot in the parking lot. Of'corse, just time I arrive and inquire why my truck hasn't yet got into the bay...all of the sudden, "Sir, we're about to pull your truck in". What BS! Shop full of workers standing around sipping coffee...smh! When I said I was just going to leave, female service rep just handed me my keys and walked away with no reason or explanation for the 2 hour delay. Management and scheduling need a big-time upgrade! I hope these people get it together and stop wasting people's time. This shop, on Cheltenham Av. usually do ok work,and being that I have used them before in the past with satisfaction, I returned...but figure I'll have to take my business elsewhere, to someone who truly values a customer's time and get them in and out in a timely manner unless they are told ahead of time that there may be a longer wait before we get you in so I can then decide if I'd wait or not. read more

Within 30 minutes of closing, the shop still allowed me to come in to check my tires which I thought had a hole or similar issue. The people in the shop were extremely patient, friendly and so helpful. They resolved the issue quickly. Only reason it gets a star is because its mandatory, but this is the worse place ever. I go here to get my car looked at because it wouldn't start, and the manager tells me I need a $700 computer for my 98 Saturn. When I get another opinion from a different mechanic, I'm told something totally different, saving me hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I was going to give 4 stars because I wasn't sure if the brief work they did on my car qualified for 5 stars. However, because they didn't charge me for their work, I had to give five. Okay, so here's the scoop: My tire pressure light came on. I drove to them (I live practically around the corner) and I asked them to take a look. They were always great with me, explained what was needed, sometimes if its minor work they wouldnt even charge me. Should have read these other 1-star reviews before taking my car here for an oil change. First of all, if you have an online coupon, they will say at first that they'll honor the price but change the story once your car is in the bay, adding extra fees and taxes depending on the model and features of your car. They pulled the usual oil change schtick of finding other problems--even calling someone to the location with a replacement part before asking me if I wanted to replace it--and attempting to give me synthetic instead of regular oil. The price bounced from the online coupon offer of $21.99 to $28 to $32 to potentially $89, then, after declining the synthetic oil and unneeded part changes, back to $32, which, after tax was actually $35. read more

I've used these guys a few times, and each time was worse than before. Used to be a regular they are have gotten really shady. Last time I took them in when it was leaking fluids, they said water pump needed to be replaced, 4+ hours labor plus parts, over $1300! Then after I come back, they say the engine's going to develop cracks and won't last more than a few months, try to sell me on a complete new engine (few thousand $$$). Why didn't they tell me before the $1300+ repair? Then the car drives really really rough and keeps stalling, neither was a problem before they "repaired" it. They say that it's just the fluids need to get pumped around and it'll be better after an hour of driving. You know what happens next, the problems didn't get any better, ended up having to get a new car. They wouldn't take responsibility for making it worse. Total rip-off. Oh and now they've been calling my cell trying to see me tires, so look forward to their spam calls after you go in. Never again. I'm going to report them to the BBB read more

My son is at school in University City and this team has made tire and engine start repairs for him timely and at a fair price. I was a regular customer here from 2014 through today. I feel that the previous mechanic, Dave, was honest and never overcharged or suggested unnecessary repairs. For example, when I deflated a tire and bent my rim on a nasty pothole last year, he only charged me $40 to repair the rim. He similarly did some work on the headlights that was 1/3 of what the dealership had estimated. Today, however, I took my car in because it was making a weird rattle while idling. The new mechanic, Milton, initially called and said that I needed 2 new rear shocks, plus alignment after installing the shocks, totaling $784. I called and got an estimate from another shop. When I called to tell Midas this, they dropped their estimate to $480, then to $450 after I told them the other shop had estimated $360. I said I would take my care elsewhere and would pick it up at the end of the day. A few hours later, I got another call from Milton. He said he had taken a closer look at my shocks, they were fine after all, a baring had been loose, but he had tightened it, changed a washer, and the rattling sound was gone. He said there would be no charge for this repair. My car is no longer rattling, and I really appreciate the free repair. However, the entire experience has made me lose any trust that they'll give me an honest, fair estimate, and I'll be taking my car elsewhere. read more

Wish I could give zero stars. Not only are they shady, but they are rude. I went in for an inspection, paid the hundreds of dollars to fix whatever they said. Realized after I had left they wrote the wrong number on my sticker - off by thousands of miles. Then I drove a total of 20 miles and my check engine light went off. Went back and the front desk guy Corey told me they couldn't change the stickers, even though it was their mistake. He argued with me about it for a while. Then his manager came out and realized his employee is a liar and said they could. Fixed the stickers but when I called mid-day to ask about the check engine light, Corey rudely told me I needed a tune-up and it was done. No price. When I picked it up, there was no charge and they would not say what was wrong with the car. Turned the car on - check engine light on. Went back in, Corey hid in the back and had the woman at the front desk say it was something that needed to be fixed at the dealer. Then when I asked WHAT needed to be fixed she fished a piece of paper out of the trash and gave it to me. Apparently I just needed new spark plugs but I offended their little egos too much with making them fix their mistake that they sent me on my way with a car about to break down. Also, definitely not a dealership issue. So unbelievably rude and nasty. read more

SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE AND TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE. DO NOT GO TO THE MIDAS on 42nd and Market. My fiancee and I went this weekend for an out-of-state emissions inspection and VIN tracing. The service was rude and unprofessional. We were told over the phone that the emissions test would be $50, and the VIN tracing would be FREE. When we picked up the car later that day, they charged an additional $20 for the VIN tracing. Not only did they NOT alert us beforehand about the additional charge, the manager/owner had actually asked us to go out to the parking lot and confirm the VIN number on the vehicle ourselves, because he was "lazy" (his actual words). His explanation for the extra $20 was because he spent "half an hour doing the paperwork" and because he had "put his personal information on the forms". Neither explanation makes sense - the DMV does not ask auto repair personnel to disclose personal information, and as a car repair service Midas should be well aware of the paperwork involved in an out-of-state VIN tracing when they originally quoted us the FREE service. Lesson from this experience: STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE and take your hard earned money to a place that understands customer service and appreciates your business. read more

(This happened a year ago, but I can't imagine the service being too different.) My Honda had been maintained by my parents until I requested they ship it from Texas for my new job here in Philly. I took it to Midas to get an oil change. During my visit, the owner/manager (?) gave me some car talk that basically translated into my car needing new brakes - if not now, within a year - which would cost about $300-400. Because he had a daughter around my age, he stated he understood about the possible financial difficulties I may have as a new young working adult and he graciously offered me a payment plan. Admittedly, I'm a little green about cars (but not enough to give in) so I called my dad and relayed the information to him. Good thing I called because apparently my uncle (who is a Honda mechanic) had checked out the car before they shipped it to me and said 1) everything about the car was fine, including the brakes and 2) they had JUST changed the oil before shipping. So thanks, Midas, for the oil change I didn't need (...I know, that's my own fault) but really, super thanks for trying to take advantage of me because I'm not knowledgable about cars. STAY AWAY FROM THIS LOCATION! My son took his car in for inspection. After being looked at, I received a call from the manager, Charles. He told me that one of the tires had some damage and needed to be replaced, that the mufflers were "CRACKED" and needed to be replaced immediately, and that the struts in the front were worn and needed to be replaced right away. He told me the mufflers would be about $500 and the struts would be $699 after a $200 coupon was applied. After some discussion about it, I told him I needed to call around for some quotes before committing to spending over $1,000 on repairs. I called back 2 more times during the day to ask questions (about the work that needed to be done and why I wasn't given an actual estimate - which now I see that 's because he was covering himself by listing the parts as recommendations because he was lying), and each time Charles tried to push me into getting the "cracked" mufflers fixed immediately. I told him to stop doing that. On Monday, the car was taken to Monro Auto Service and Tire Center in Blue Bell. Upon inspection they discovered and even showed my son that there were NO CRACKS in the mufflers, and they put that in writing. I did think it was odd that Charles said they were both cracked. Moreover, while they said they recommended new struts because of the car's age, they were also not worn. They found no broken or leaking parts. Mind you, I bought the car with used with over 75,000 miles on it. Charles didn't recommend the struts then, and he/that shop inspected the car when I first bought it. This is not the first time Charles has tried to push me to spend money unnecessarily, but I do find his LIES this time to be disgusting. Repair recommendations are one thing, but blatant lies and creating a false sense of urgency to get money out of people really crosses the line. He also talked badly about other local mechanics stating they are terrible. I understand competition, but bad mouthing people is unbecoming and unnecessary. And how does he even know. Frankly, his words are libelous since I am certain he lacks first hand knowledge. The practices of this location are questionable and the manager lacks integrity. STAY AWAY!!! read more

I highly recommend them! I stopped by an hour before closing because I was worried about my car battery (there was a slightly struggling noise when starting the car and I have a road trip this weekend I can't miss). They were able to run diagnostics on my car right then - thankfully the battery is fine, and I just need to drive my car more often. I was in and out in 20 minutes! They didn't even charge for diagnostics since they were the ones to install the battery a year and a half ago and wanted to make sure everything was okay.
