I moved to area and needed a fix for my car. Engine kept shutting off while driving. Took it in and mechanic said he's book til the end of the week and then he's in vacation for several weeks. But He took the time to ask what's wrong with it and looked at the engine. After testing the battery, he asked to start the car. Messed with the air inflow and the engine shuts off. He diagnosed the problem and see if he had the item In stock. He gave me an estimate and said the car will be done by 5 the same day. It was 11am when I brought it in. I trust these guys with all my cars. They are the nicest. And the most trustworthy when it comes to cars. They specialize in Volvos but they don't mind taking a look at my old Subaru! They've brought two Outbacks back to life and well past the expiration that the dealer said my car would last. Not to mention these guys never have lied about what my car actually needed whereas the dealer would quite unnecessary extra work for a thousand more. I know because my car mechanic friend (who Is also Volvo specialist who i wouldn't want him to waste time working on my car as his hobby is to bring Volvos back to life, not doing favors for friends) would quote me the exact same as Dennis would on what actually my car needed, and that is how we knew these guys know their junk. They seemed pretty thorough, but as I had never been there before and what they quoted was akin to sticker shock I chose to instead go to the Volvo dealership. In all fairness their diagnosis was accurate - but the work at the dealership was done several hundred dollars under what was quoted here and my car was ready two days sooner than Dennis's estimate. read more

I bought a 2000 Volvo V70 XC AWD/SE (yeah, there's that many letter designations for this ridiculous car) and was glad to learn there was an indie repair shop in Fishtown that specializes in Volvos, since this particular model is a notorious piece of crap. Anyway, I took the old V70 down to Dennis for an oil change. The check engine light had been going off and on, so I asked them to scan the computer to see what codes it was throwing. There were some emissions codes. The catalytic converter needed to be replaced. This is an expensive part because it contains platinum. This is where the story gets kinda long and boring, but this was my first impression of this repair shop, so I think it's better to explain how it all went down. Skip down to the end for the bottom line on this place. I was specifically told by the repair guy that they could order the part or I could try to find one on my own. I told them to order it to the tune of $700. A couple of days later, I got curious and did one Google search for "Volvo Catalytic Converter" and located one for $400. I called Dennis Auto to tell them I had found a cheaper part and to see if it was too late to cancel the part they'd ordered. It was already in transit, so I asked if they could send it back. I even offered to pay the restocking and shipping fees. I was totally stonewalled by the guy on the phone. He just told me it wasn't possible and would not give me a reason. He just kept saying it was a "special order" and that it was impossible to send back. He told me he'd see if the owner could get them to take it back. Two days went by, and I didn't hear anything from the owner or anyone at the shop. I finally had to call them. They said they were working on the car at that moment. Ok, great. It's too late to get the cheaper part. Another day went by and someone from the shop actually called me to tell me the car was ready. At this point, the car had been in the shop for over a week and this was the first call I'd received from them after the initial diagnosis. This time, it was the owner, Spiro. He'd heard that I had an issue with the cost of the part and proceeded to give me a good explanation about why it wouldn't have saved me any money to install the cheaper part and then knocked $100 off the cost of the part because he wanted to keep me as a return customer. That went a long way with me and I told him so. I also told him it would have been nice to get that explanation before all the drama went down. He apologized for being too busy to explain everything to me beforehand and took full responsibility for what had happened. I left a happy customer, and so far so good on the quality of the job. The bottom line: A solid independent Volvo repair shop that's better at the business of working on cars rather than communicating with their customers. I'll be back because my car is ostensibly a piece of shit. Things that could have made my experience better: * Let me know when I can expect to get my car back! I had to call them if I wanted any info about the car. It's fine that it was in the shop for over a week, but they should have called me to tell me when to expect the job to be done. * Identify yourself by name on the phone. I never knew if it was someone I'd already talked to or if it was a new person. * Prior to the work getting done, an explanation of why there was no cost benefit in me bringing in my own part. * Overall, just up the give-a-shit quotient a little bit, dudes. I know it probably sucks dealing with prissy Volvo owners, but try to romance us just a little bit and we'll be a lot happier about handing you hundreds of dollars every visit. read more

As long as I live in Philly I will always bring my vehicles to Dennis Auto. I have been bringing my Ford Focus here for six years and not once have they attempted to dupe me or give bad information. About a year ago I needed my brakes fixed asap so I rolled into PepBoys. The price was going to be $650+. I decided if I had to wait a day so be it and decided to try my regular mechanic-the new quote was around $150! I was SO happy that day!! Another time I was staying in Delaware County and took my car that kept randomly dying to a mechanic there who charged me over $400 and then told me he had no idea what the problem was. I then took my car to Dennis Auto and Spiro the owner called me a couple of hours later and said he had done some research and the issue was actually a recall issue and to take it to the dealer and they would replace some things for me for free...do you realize what a ride he could have taken me on financially if he wanted! It's for these reasons as well as great customer service (including driving your car to you if you are working close by) that I will never leave Dennis Auto. It is a relief no know I do not need to worry about my car and being ripped off via my car! read more

I drove my car to a nearby mechanic who actually recommended I take it to Dennis' since that specific place did not work on Volkswagens. I have no knowledge of cars/costs and it's pretty obvious so I could have very easily been ripped off - it's happened to me once in the past unfortunately! Dennis auto repair was extremely honest and fair and didn't even charge to top off my low oil (which I was not even aware was low) and they weren't pushy about an unnecessary oil change, which is something I've experienced with different places in the past. I took my 740 series 1992 Volvo station wagon to Dennis' Auto Repair thinking that it was on its last legs, and that I'd have to pay ~$450 for a new starter. Turns out, it was a wiring issue, which they fixed while I waited. They also did a general once-over on the car, and added some air in the tires at no charge. It was really quick, and everyone was very nice to me from the moment I walked in. I even asked whether it was worth it to get the starter replaced just in case, and they said no. Dennis' knows their stuff, and they aren't going to jerk you around to make money. It really seems like they care about the work they are doing, and I was impressed that they were able to diagnose and deal with the issue so quickly. I had a great experience and I won't be taking my car anywhere else while I live in Philly. I would definitely recommend their services to anyone, especially Volvo owners. They were extremely professional, and as a female in her 20s, I felt comfortable trusting my car to them without having to worry about being ripped off. I always feel like I'm getting ripped off when I go to the mechanic, as I did when I went in to get my muffler and headlight fixed. I ended up only doing the muffler, as my headlight would cost an additional 150$. My bill seemed high, but I'm still getting used to having a volvo, and their parts DO cost more. Anyway, about a week later one of the mechanics called me and explained they accidently overcharged me $80 for my muffler, and I should come in and get my money or if I wanted, they would fix my headlight for no additional charge. I am so happy to say that I now know of a good mechanic in Philadelphia. I got stuck at the end of the month that my inspection was due and took the car to Pep Boys - never do this, BTW. It didn't pass and I was quoted more than the car was worth to make it legal again. On a tip from a friend, I took it to Dennis Auto, making it very clear that I only wanted the bare minimum done so that the car would pass inspection. Spiro listened, and delivered. Didn't try to sell me on things I didn't need done, PLUS the quote was half of Pep Boys'. Not to mention, it was pouring rain when I took the car in, and I even got a lift to the El in the bargain. I took my Volvo S80 here when I kept getting a warning light about engine coolant levels being low - stop vehicle immediately. They topped off the coolant, checked coolant pressure (it was fine), and looked for any leaks. They then vacuumed out all of the tree debris that was under my hood (I park outside) as well as fixed the hinge on my front hood and lubricated all the door hinges. They did all of this for free! They just said the coolant level will probably go down eventually again over time, and when there is a problem come back and we'll see if we can isolate it. read more

I brought in my 940 to have an increasing oil leak diagnosed, but warned Manny that my grad student budget required an estimate before they did any actual work. He called me later that afternoon and gave me a run-down of the problems they had found, which unsurprisingly were numerous (hey, this car is older than some college students). He didn't pressure me into anything, and told me to take my time deciding whether I could afford to do the suggested work or not. Ultimately, I decided that the oil leak can wait for a fix until next semester when I'm earning a bit more, but they have definitely earned my return business! read more

I used to go to a Volvo specialist in Delaware, over 15 years ( this is my 4th Volvo) they are very good, but I took my car there in 2015 because the engine light was on ... twice. The third time I went to Dennis auto and to this day the light has not been back on. Last month, took is back to Delaware due to a really loud noise and they had no idea what it was, Dennis auto, located and fixed it!
