It's the rare repair shop that has you running back to the dealer to save money on a muffler. Long story short Midas wanted $1,500, the dealer came in at an even $1,000. The explanation... none really. Maybe everything they touch does turn to gold. Back in the day, when factory mufflers rusted through every two to three years, Midas guaranteed their parts for as long as you owned your car. I even remember an ad where "Old Man McCreedy" would bring his ancient Model T in for his umpteenth "free" muffler. Now that mufflers routinely last ten years or more their guarantee is largely illusory since most people dump their cars long before then. There's a common scene in many old movies where the unsuspecting customer asks how much will something cost... "how much you got?" comes the smirking reply. My tire lights went on before I had to pick up my nephew at the airport, which was located an hour and a half away. The temperature had dropped so I knew this affected the tire pressure but to be extra careful went to NB Midas located in North Brunswick, NJ to add air to the tire. I was charged $40 for this "service". I knew I should have left but I was on a time crunch and there was a chance of snow. The owner of this franchise was insulted when I questioned the amount of the charge and told me to sit down and not say anything. He actually said I had an attitude when I asked he not do a diagnostic to see if there were other problems with the car and to just limit the service to adjusting the air pressure. He said I should be happy he even took the car because I didn't have an appointment. I've read stories of how women are taken advantage of by mechanics and Midas represents the worst of this class of sexist mechanics. Ladies avoid Midas at all cost. read more

We found a screw in our car tires. The employee pulled it out with his fingers and found it didn't puncture the tire. The owner charged me $10. I got an oil change here and all of a sudden, I notice there's a wet spot in the parking lot where I parked. I thought it was air conditioning but the next day it was still there. My car was leaking oil profusely wherever I drove it. Turns out it was from the oil change at Midas. Before writing a 1 star review, I took it to two different shops, and they both confirmed whoever changed my oil didn't do it properly. Or as the mechanic told me, "a real half assed job." If they can't even change oil, why in the world would any sane person take their car here for anything else??? Their favorite words to say at this place is "One to two hours." I ended up being there close to 5 hours!! WTF! I was desperate when I came here. I was having problems with my breaks. Unless, would have waited to go to an Honda Service Center. According to them, I needed a whole new set of brake pads and other stuff on all four wheels. Four hours and $600 later, my brakes were not working like how a new brakes should work. Only of out desperation I would ever come here. About the location. They have a small TV that was on the PBS channel the whole time I was there. Lucky for me, my boyfriend and I took a walk to waste time. I went to this Midas in late 2010 for an oil change and I did not have a positive experience. I say skip this Midas and the one on Route 18. They are owned by the same person and both shops have HORRIBLE customer service. I called two days ahead for an appointment, arrived early for my appointment and waited for over an hour. I do understand that things happen and other people have services done but a large chunk of my waiting time my car was sitting in their lot :( I also could see that this location does the bare minimum in terms of customer service and being courteous. Never again!!!! Brought my car in to have rear brake pad replaced because I thought Midas specialized in brakes. Apparently not on foreign cars. Caliper and control module shorted out and they refuse to take responsibility. Imagine the expense to have the dealership correct their mistakes. I wish I could give negative stars... This place is a trap. I went for an oil change because this place was close to my place in Jersey. They brought me in the shop after 1h - no less- to show me how bad my front tires were. I did need new tires so I told them to put new ones on. What I didn't know at the time is that my tires are low profile sport tires that even the tire places don't all have in stock. Strangely this Midas did. For 200 bucks a pop. After another hour I get my car back and leave. Arrived home I noticed the front tires were a little weird... They weren't the right size!!! Actually thinner! I go back and Tony the manager had the balls to tell me it is fine. It is not, if you want your odometer to be accurate. So I had them put my old tires back on and never came back. DON'T go to the Midas on route 1, their customer service is horrible!! I went in to have 2 tires replaced and told the guy I wanted the equivalent to the quality of tires i already had on the car. He assured me he would. When I asked him what brand of tire he told me Crosswind. It took them 2 and a half hours to change 2 tires!!!!! They finally had the car done 10 minutes before they closed and had me running late for a appointment that I had told them an hour prior that I needed to get to. After running out to my car to leave I looked at the tired and realized the type of tire was called Crosswind, the brand was called LingLong!!! Some cheap no name brand made in China with cheap looking tread tread. Upon researching that night after the appointment I was 10 minutes late to, I found out these crap tires sold for $60-$80 on line and Midas sold them to me for $140, not to mention well less then the quality of tire i already had on the car. This guy was a huge LIAR!! I called in the very next morning right as they opened at 8am and told them I want a refund and to have them put the old tires back on. The man on the phone said I would get a refund for the tires but not for the services. He told me that they were really busy on weekends and to bring the car back in on Monday and he would put the tires aside for me. I came on Monday and was then told that they do not offer refunds on tires and they refused to take the tires back!!! These people are HORRIBLE!!! read more

Can I give less than 1 Star? The first time I was there they tricked me into changing my transmission oil on a 3 year-old, less than 25,000 miles car. I should have done a bit research before I said yes. The second time (yes I was dumb enough to go back for a second time), they asked me to change my coolant. I initially said yes. Then the guy came back and said"oh we cannot change it because it is an integral part of the car." I was confused, for they said I have to change it because it was not working. I read the bad reviews but thought, all I need is my battery checked and an oil change, how bad could they be? Well, they're the type of place that will try to charge you the most they can and hope you don't ask questions, so beware. I let them change my filters but they put in the most expensive type (who knew there was a "premium" cabin filter?! give me a break) without asking me, and when I questioned why it was so expensive, the answer I received was "well, your filters were realllly dirty". I guess I look like the kind of person who can be taken advantage of, but I told them they can change it to a cheaper filter. Of course he changed the price and didn't bother to change the filter (because I'm sure the actual price difference of the filter is $0.50 or less) and it's not worth their labor to change it. I typically go to the Midas in Lawrenceville near my job and I urge anyone reading this to make the longer trip down route 1 if you were ever considering this location. A business should be helpful and truthful, and earn their customers. This Midas is only looking to take your money as quickly and discreetly as possible. read more

One month ago I brought my car to this midas. I needed my water pump replaced. They replaced water pump but they never replaced thermostat. I paid 750 dollars for this ..one month later my car over heated the reason being the thermostat was bad. I had to paid 520 dollars more. At a different garage. I was told that when a water pump is replaced the thermostat should be replace with it. Avoid this midas. Avoid this midas the service is horrible. I will never use this midas again. I recommend no one to this midas. Avoid this midas. Please go to a mechanic that is honest and takes pride in their work. One that gives you the proper service that you expect and pay for. Dishonest and unprofessional, terrible experience I would like to give 0 star if I could. I went there for oil change, and the manager recommended me to do a four-wheel-rotation as well. I agreed and paid for this, but they didn't do this job at all, and claimed they did. I have labels on all four wheels, and I remember which tires have chips/scratches, so I know the exact location of each wheel, moreover I have been watching them when they worked on my car, so I am pretty sure that they are lying. After quite an argument, they agreed to do the four-wheel-rotation for me "again", and then noticed that one tire has a chip, and recommended me to replace that tire. If they really did their job as they said, why they didn't spot this problem before? Thirdly, wheel lugs have to be re-torqued after 50-100 miles every time they are removed and resembled, especially for aluminum rims. To my surprise, the manager never mentioned this to me. I have to say this is very unprofessional. Dishonest and unprofessional, cannot image a worse place Will never come back again. If you have to go to this Midas, keep your eyes on. read more

With one car in the body shop after an accident, my car broke an exhaust pipe flange the next day, on a Friday! I needed my car back on the road Saturday at 10:00 so I took into in for a quick weld until I could get the parts and do a real repair. Midas said they had to replace the resonator. I told them to use a stainless-steel type which they said does not exists for my car. They only had a steel piece. I had to decide on the spot, so I went with a $175 carbon steel section and $100 of labor to get me through the next week. For the work I was doing that week, a $275 temporary fix was worth it. I think they had to bend a pipe in the back room to get it to fit. I came home and ordered a stainless-steel resonator pipe, made for my car from Timeautoparts for $69, and a Walker stainless muffler for $107. In a week the parts arrive and four bolts come off to install the two pieces in an hour in my driveway I will have a new exhaust system that will last. These pop-up yellow castles with a king's crown on top that say they do everything are fine for hot dogs, burgers, and temporary emergency repairs until you can get to a mechanic. So far it has been two days, and the patched pipe is holding. It was worth it. read more

I went to this place for oil change and mufflers. Also, got the wipers replaced. I absolutely did NOT have a positive experience. They are a bunch of pushers. Even after paying a $400 bill they were giving me a look as if they have done a favor to me. Additionally, they told me that they will give me a $20 off at the end. And when the time came for the bill, the guy refused that he ever made such promise. They offered me a coupon for a free oil change next time. After 5 months my NEW muffler is broken again and they have again refused to look at that without paying cash to look at it. They said nothing is in warranty after 3 months - parts or labor. They gave me a hard time to even give a oil change on their own coupon (BTW - the copuon expires in 6 months of date of issue - you need to have your previous bill). I absolutely will never go back there and would ask everyone to better go to any other car shop besides North Brunswick NJ Midas (off route 1). read more

It turned out the car simply required an oil change, tire rotation, and 2 new air filters. Midas said I needed new tires, brakes, and some piece to hold the engine in place. This place is really close to home, so I've given them several chances over the years. I do a lot of my own work and know my way around cars. I can honestly say that their service and ethics are way below average. I let them do exhaust work on my daughter's car because it was a sudden problem the day before she was driving cross-country. The job took three times as long as they promised, and the repair failed one month later in middle of Utah. The failure was due entirely to the poor workmanship by Midas of North Brunswick. I believe in preventive maintenance, but every time I've gone there for an oil change they try to sell me over-priced services I don't really need. I've heard them pitch other customers the same way. Most recently, I dropped off car in for oil change at 8:30am. They said it would take 1 hour. I called 90 minutes later and they said it would take two more hours. When I arrived 2 1/2 hours later, my car was untouched, and they said they would have it done by end of day. They offered no apology or explanation. I did notice that the vehicles in shop and parking lot were not the same ones from four hours earlier when I brought my car in. They were clearly pushing off my car to take in new, drive-up customers. Well, I'd had enough. I went elsewhere, in the middle of a Saturday, and oil change was done in an hour.
