I dropped off my car at the North Brunswick, NJ Pep Boys location on a Monday at 11:30 AM for an oil change. Previously, about two months ago, I had my rear brake shocks replaced at this location, but they had been acting up recently, so I requested they be inspected as well. After waiting for hours without any updates, I called the shop and was assured the service would be completed by closing time. However, an hour before closing, I was informed that the work would not be finished until the next day at 10 AM. When I arrived the following day at 10:40 AM--40 minutes past the promised time--neither the oil change nor the brake inspection had been completed. What made it even worse, was how the staff seemed to be joking around while I waited on line, and not taking what they were doing seriously. A complete lack of professionalism. Additionally, I noticed multiple car keys left unattended on a desk, posing a significant security risk. This lack of professionalism and declining service quality has convinced me never to return to this Pep Boys location. Legitimately, they are the worst. read more

We just moved to the area and needed an oil change, we called to make sure that it wasn't busy, since we have a baby and we have to work around the baby's schedule. I made an appointment for 9:00 AM. I was told that my oil change would take 1.5 hours. 45 minutes later my car was still in the parking lot. I asked Michelle, the receptionist about the timing. She said that an appointment time wasn't really the time the car would be serviced, it just meant that the car would be seen that day (?). This is not my definition of an appointment time. She then went to check in the back and she said that there was still 1 car in front of mine to have an oil change. She then said that they were "short staffed". So, I guess my oil change which was scheduled for 9:00 wouldn't be done for at least 3 hours, 45 minutes...the 45 minutes I already waited, the 1.5 hours for the car in front of mine and then 1.5 hours for mine. BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! My daughter blew a tire the Saturday before Easter. She needed new tires before Monday so she could get to work. The only place open on Easter Sunday was this Pep Boys and oh how lucky they even had an appointment available! We were so happy to have a solution to our problem, we didn't read the reviews like we usually do. BIG MISTAKE! She goes to her appointment and just wants the tires replaced. They took the tires off and took pictures of the "awful state" of the rotors saying they were burnt, lipped and grooved and that it needed to be addressed immediately. They made it out like it was dire if she decided not to do the repairs. She called me hysterical with fear and worry about the cost thinking her car would explode if she drove off. I told her just to get the tires and not worry about the rest because it is not uncommon for an unknown mechanic to try to take advantage of a 22 year old who clearly doesn't know anything about cars. She got out of there after 5 HOURS later with just her new tires after being told "oh another 5 or 10 minutes" over and over and over. She took her car to her regular mechanic two days later and he said her car was fine. WHAT A TERRIBLE WAY TO DO BUSINESS! DO NOT GO HERE! I've been coming to the N. Brunswick location for about 10 years. Old manager and staff, who were great, are gone and there is a new sales team. I was not happy with the 2.5 hour length of time it took to change oil and do a tire rotation--I was told it will be much faster. There were issues removing the wheel locks and I was told to pay an extra $75 to remove one of them, even though there were brand new and I already paid my bill! I went into the store blindly, I was doing a good deed for my brother and replacing his dead car battery while he was on vacation. I had no idea what kind of battery and I didn't even know the year of the car because I couldn't find his registration. The young man at the front desk was super helpful, was able to find exactly what I needed. And got me the right battery , and I return the old battery. Woke up to a flat tire on a 3 day 2 night trip to Cranbury NJ from Upstate NY. I had AAA come throw a spare on my car and he told me to take it to the closest repair shop that was open (it was a sunday) and that unfortunately happened to be this pep boys location. Never in my LIFE have i seen someone patch a tire so SLOWLY. We dropped the car off around 11:30 and were very specific about just needing a tire patched and that's it. The guy even told us "shouldn't be that long, an hour or so" since there were other customers ahead of us. We grabbed food at the diner next door (5 stars highly recommend) and came back after walking up and down the plaza. 3 HOURS LATER they get the car on the lift. Then, they sent me a "complimentary inspection" text telling me they refused to do a tire repair because i apparently had other minor mechanical issues which didn't need fixing at that time since we had a 4+ hour trip ahead of us. My boyfriend had to go to the back and basically tell the guy how to do is own job and make him do what we came there for. Finally the mechanic agreed to patch my tire and throw it on the car for $26 (which took another hour). The man at the front desk was very nice, but definitely stressed. They should have 2 people up front ESPECIALLY on days when no other mechanics are open. Super disappointed and would rather drive on a flat tire all the way home then wait another 4 hours for this shit. read more

Don't waste your time here. Unhelpful and rude customer service. Made an appointment for 7pm to go in for an oil change. Saw a coupon on the Pepboys website, see photo, for $20 off an oil change along with a free tire rotation. I went through the online process of booking the appointment, putting in that car info and confirming the services. The price still showed at $60. I called them to confirm the appointment and they were very nice on the phone. They explained to me that they were running about 30 mins behind schedule today- he expected my car to be done around 8:15pm which was completely fine. We get there, and they're CLUELESS about this offer that they have posted online and refused to honor the $20 coupon. We even went to the extent to show them and they still said it would still cost $80 for the change (which in my opinion is a terrible deal). This place is hot garbage. I'd give no stars if I could, but I suppose the one star could be for the manager and the assistant manager who had to step in and help me straighten things out. A week ago, I was driving my car when I realized my wheel would no longer turn or accelerate. I managed to park in a lot which was coincidentally adjacent to this PepBoys. I peeped into the hood of my car and noticed my belt was loose. I walk in and tell them. Originally they estimated 300-400, but then told me that it would be 100 dollars to replace the belt. Cool. I ask how long it will take for them to fix it. They tell me tomorrow, and they will call me. Day 1: It's mid morning and no one has called me. I call, they tell me that it's actually my alternator that went bad. They're still waiting on the part from the dealer and they say they will call me back. I wait another 4-5 hrs and still no answer. I call again and I'm informed they cannot get the part that day, but the particular worker that I've been corresponding with said they would be there the next day and will call me. Day 2: I had not heard from anyone yet and it's around 4 pm. I call them, and a new staff member tells me they will go and figure out what's a going on. They tell me it's not my belt or the alternator, but the alternator bracket and they can get it for me by next day. They quote me $508. I ask them to break it down and included is a $50 warranty I never asked for. With a coupon, it comes down to a whopping $410. Additionally, the bracket which should have been here next day will now take 1-2 days to ship before repairing. I was this close to personally pushing my car down route 1 to any other mechanic that would have me. Day 3: I escalate to the manager, who finally followed through on updating me and gave me a price that's only slightly better. Day 4-5: I go pick up my car because they tell me they test drove it and it's ready. They ask me if the check engine light was on prior to dropping it off, which I tell them it was, assuming they did their due diligence. I hop in and start the car, ready to put this behind me. I'm no mechanic, but my car was clearly making abnormal sounds + it couldn't accelerate above 30mph. I go in livid, and tell them there's still something still wrong. I have to leave my car AGAIN for them to run tests. Day 6: they test it. They can't figure out what's wrong. I call Triple A to tow it to another mechanic. The fact I had to escalate it to the managers and had to waste 1 week with absolutely nothing to show for it means I will not be patronizing this establishment in the future. Not even to buy a car freshener. Tl;dr: pray your car never breaks down here and if it does, tow it or muscle up and push it to another garage. read more

Wound up not needing one of them so I went here to return it because it's closer. AND SO IT BEGINS. Took forever. Service was terrible. Incredibly lazy workers always trying to pitch you a new set of tires for your car. The bathrooms were absolutely filthy. The sinks have out light brown water and the urinal had diarrhoea in it. The place took over 2 and a half hours to change a single tire. The waiting room was as dismal as can be . I had a wheel alignment done here on 6/1/19 & I got my car back worse than when i dropped It off. Didn't realize It until i got on the turnpike to go home and couldn't even hit 65 with out my car shaking uncontrollably & pulling to the right to the point where i pulled over because i thought my tire blew out. I called back to let them know & they told me to bring It back to be "fixed". I don't live in area so I didn't bother going back there to possibly have more problems. My car broke down while I was on route 1 in North Brunswick so I had to have it towed to the nearest shop which was Pep Boys in North Brunswick. While I was waiting for the tow truck I looked up the reviews and honestly I was scared. On the phone they were nice, honest and very helpful so I took a chance and scheduled an appointment. Thank god I didn't listen to the reviews because my experience was an excellent one! From the moment I made the appointment to when I picked up my car they were nothing but honest and professional. I never needed to call to check on my car as they updated me in a timely matter. The cashiers were nice and the managers were very professional and pleasant. My husband had trouble starting his car. The check engine light was on, and we purposely chose Pep Boys because we were rewards members. On the website it states that rewards members receive "free check engine light evaluation". We were very hopeful that Pep Boys could fix the problem, which we would have been more than happy to pay for, but wouldn't be charged a fee to diagnose the issue. When the car was dropped, off everyone at the desk was friendly and helpful, but they informed us that the check engine light diagnosis would not be free of charge. Although we were confused, we were happy that his car had actually made it there, and figured we would drop it off and figure out the problem later. When we got home, I went to the Pep Boys website and verified that they had advertised this free check engine light service. Later that day, the representative from Pep Boys phoned me to explain that they couldn't get the car to NOT start, but that we could leave it there and they would keep trying. They also informed me that because they couldn't get the car to not start, they were unable to determine the problem. At this time, we didn't have a lot of options, so I agreed, and left the car at their location for approximately two weeks. After two weeks had passed, we figured we had better go pick it up, and that maybe the problem wasn't so severe. I begrudgingly paid the $103.96 for the "drive-ability evaluation" as the receipt calls it, even though I had evidence of the screenshot for a free check engine light diagnosis, AND they had found nothing that helped us at all. Now we are out $103, and still have no idea what is wrong with the car. What did we pay for? Why would Pep Boys advertise this free service for rewards members and then not follow through? We were very disappointed and wrote to Pep Boys for a refund with the highlighted screen shot of the free check engine light attached. Months and months passed with no response. I find it so rude that they didn't even answer me at all. At this time, I was driving 52 miles one way to work and spending tons of money there on frequent oil changes. The least they could do was write back. Now all I can see is a company that takes money from people, after providing false advertising, and then leaves them high and dry with no solution. In addition, I have serious doubts that they even tried to start the car that often over the two weeks. After we got the car home, it only started 2 of the 6 times that we tried, until we got it fixed by another mechanic. read more

We were visiting the area from another state over the weekend and brought the car in for a battery related issue. I called when they opened at 9 to confirm they had the vehicle from the tow company and explain the problem. They called back at 11 telling me the problem, the cost of repairs, and telling me that they would "definitely" have it done the same day, a Sunday,after I explained I needed to get back to my home by Sunday night and if that couldn't happen in my car I needed to know ahead of time to make arrangements for my companions who had work the next day. I was told it would take 3 hours. I call them at 2 for an update and I'm told they are working on it and it will be done in another 1.5 hrs. No mention of anything inhibiting their progress. No mention of a risk that it wouldn't get done same day as THEY said it "definitely" would. It's only when I call at 4 that they tell me they probably can't fix it that day because something is bolted on too tight for them to open up but that they would "keep trying."So you had it from 9am,supposedly started working on it at 11, and didn't discover this issue until 4? Nonsense and BS. If you can open something you notice that right away and CALL AND SAY SOMETHING. But of course you won't know that if you ACTUALLY started working on the car AFTER 2 and just lied to the customer. Then at 5 I get a call telling me the work is done but they need time to put it back together and to come tomorrow morning because it "will" be done. I spend significant money to make travel arrangements for my companions and I stay in the area thinking I will have my car in the morning. But of COURSE I have to call them at 10am and then I'm told that they never could fix the issue (Undo the bolt) and need to go to the dealer for the part!! Lied to, YET AGAIN. You just told me last night you did it but you needed time in the morning to put the car back together!! Then you want to charge me significant sums of money for your lies and for you to waste my time?!?! THEN, when I FINALLY get close to my home I discover that my car is making rattling noises because YOU BOTCHED THE WORK YOU LIED ABOUT AND TOOK SO LONG TO DO?!?? I figured before moving to Texas I would have the tires replaced on my wife's car before the 1700 mile trip. There was a promotion going on for the tires I purchased so I figured to have her get the entire package with wheel alignment too. What could go wrong. Well first they over charged her, the price online they said was wrong, that it didn't apply to those tires. Yet it still shows on the website. Issue was they over charged for the installation. $184.00 for installation when online shows it is $107. There is more. Then there is the alignment. Wife gets her car and she says it is pulling hard to the right. She calls me with this while I'm 1700 miles away trying to secure our new place. This is just what I need. I have her call them back and explain the issue. The service tech on the phone seemed to take it personally and was giving her a hard time about it but she brought it back in with 9 miles on it. They said they did the alignment AGAIN but it is worse. Now I get the call from the wife who is now screaming at me. Last thing I need. Now I call Brad Benson and schedule a Saturday appointment with them. No reason to waste her time there again since I doubt they will learn how to do alignment the third time around. Brad Benson service tech explained how bad they had her alignment with a before and after print out. Pep boy's also gave her a print out only on the second attempt which shows their first attempt was wrong. Really! They never even road tested the vehicle to make sure the job was right. Visa credit card dispute is going in on Monday. I want my overcharge refunded and the cost of alignment too. Their customer service doesn't exist. They were rude to her and offered no apology for their mistake. I ordered a tire online and scheduled an appointment to get the tire put on. I first had to go to the regular register to get the tire then had to carry it over to the service desk? Makes sense doesn't it? The cashier literally had no idea what he was doing and as I kept trying to help him and tell him my name. He told me I ordered it under a different name (also makes sense doesn't it?) too bad I have the order confirmation in my name. Then I carry the tire over to the service desk for them to tell me it will take an HOUR to get ONE tire put on. Excuse me but what?! I came to New Jersey all the way from Las Vegas to help with the covid crisis. While I've been here I've had multiple car issues which is very unfortunate considering I'm so far away from home and can't go to my regular shop. Pepboys happened to be the closest shop to me and so I went in to get all of my tires replaced. Then they recommend I needed a new lower ball joint. A week or 2 later my brakes started shaking whenever I used them so I went back in and got new brakes and rotors. During that repair they said I needed a new front strut so I came back for that a few days later. I was quoted 930 dollars for the front strut replacement and ended up paying 1200. Not to mention the wheel alignment they did without asking. I had my wheels aligned when I had my ball joint replaced. So I spent 2800 dollars which is almost double the price I would've paid back home for all of these repairs. I've learned my mistake and will never return to a Pepboys again. I 100% regret it. Honestly if I could leave zero stars I would. I brought it there to get my tires aligned and within less than a month had to go back and get it fixed. Car shook insanely and pulled to the right. Had a 90 day warranty to get it realigned if there was any issues for free so went back and was met with attitude and rude questioning. Told them the car shook and pulled to the right and was met with attitude the entire time. Told that just because it shook doesn't mean it's the alignment which Is fine but if that's the case why is that the receipt I received showed a signifant realignment if that was the case. Got it done and had the receipt pretty much thrown at me by the cashier. A week after getting it realigned my car failed to start so being an idiot allowed a family member to bring it back there to check it out. They original told us it was an issue with the spark plugs and we needed a tune up but then was told the engine was shot and needed a new one for $4000. News to me considering I brought it to the dealer and was told that the only issues were the 02 sensors and valves that needed fixing and a few other minor repairs and not the engine itself. So I opted out of getting it repaired there. Was told that they can start work with a $2000 deposit and that the total cost would be $4000. Decided to sleep on it but then upon arriving there was told that they Ordered the parts before I brought in the deposit and was charged $200 for the parts even though none of the work was done since I didn't believe it was the engine and got the car back with a dead battery. Brought it to another shop that fixed the problem which was a faulty ignition coil and now the car runs great for $600. Sorry guys don't think I'll ever be using your service again. read more

Great customer service here today. I hit a pothole on Rt 1 today and needed a tire replaced at 5pm and I have a tire plan. The young guy at Pep Boys stuck through it all between calling my interrogative tire insurance and dealing with nonstop business, he handled everything very calmly. Something you just don't see that often. He has what it takes to be a store manager or greater. Well done and very thankful. The mechanic also courteous, not one ounce of arrogance. I don't like deflating businesses that do nothing wrong and are friendly but, a flat tire is a flat tire. And if the tire is already off the car it doesn't take two hours plus to change one tire. They did mention they had a busy morning but when we were there it was around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. To Pep Boys defense they are friendly when helping you and communicate well, but it shouldn't take two hours for one tire come prepared to wait, the other guy in the lobby did.
