Chippewa Motel - Dirt and grime on the walls

    Chippewa Motel

ZERO STARS - I booked this motel through Hotels.com for a short visit to see my child who attends a…read morenearby university, and I've never been more horrified by a lodging experience in my life. From the moment I arrived, the room and property was absolutely filthy -- dirt caked into the floors, stained bed linens, and grime coating the walls. The smell inside was unbearable -- a pungent mix of marijuana and curry that hit you the second you opened your car door to check in. To make matters worse, I found stink bugs crawling up the walls. It was truly revolting. The so-called "bed" was hard as a rock -- I might as well have slept on the floor (if it weren't covered in filth). As if the room itself wasn't bad enough, trucks in the parking lot were revving their engines at 2 AM, making it impossible to get any sleep. What really pushed this experience over the edge was the appalling behavior of the office manager, PK. Who called me at 10 PM the night before check-in, threatening to cancel my reservation because he "couldn't run the card" -- despite my Hotels.com booking clearly stating Pay at Check-In. When I tried to explain this, he became rude, disrespectful, and downright offensive. He told me, "You too poor," and said he didn't want "drug addicted people" staying at his motel. This was completely uncalled for and beyond unprofessional. No customer deserves to be spoken to like that -- especially when the booking terms were being followed correctly. This motel is an absolute disgrace -- dirty, noisy, and run by someone with no respect for customers. Do yourself a favor: save your money and stay somewhere else, even if it's a little further away. You'll thank yourself later.

This man came in and behaved very authoritatively and made his way around the room, and was telling me to perform certain tasks. I was diagnosed with frostbite and trenchfoot, on just the eighth! I've been recovering, and I still have a heavy limp, and this man came in and acted like he was the unwanted stern uncle I never had! The smile on my face is completely gone, after just enjoying myself, purely, to a tv show and a coffee, but this man came in, and behaved so strangely and awkwardly. I tried to hard to be polite to what I assumed might be his personal culture, but eventually I had to affirmatively tell the man to leave my room so I could prepare myself. Him hovering around and acting like we were a small family was not okay, and I will not be staying here again. Bottom line- creepy, creepy feeling after that stay. Felt like paradise, but after his incredibly suspicious behavior- my smile was wiped, and I'm ready to sail off. Will not stay at this motel, ever again, after that- how incredibly rude and indifferent. When I told him that I was a housekeeper, and that I could take care of the room myself easily- he remarked back with "a housekeeper would have their room clean," or something along those lines. I had had, and have established every intention to leave a clean room, yet more motivated ever to put this establishment in my past. Everything else is odd, too, I tried to be polite, but in consideration of the motel and their standards- they act, and behaved like my inventory was their personal business. On every account- I've had many awkward instances here. Now, with my life more serene than ever, on my own path- I won't tolerate this behavior anymore- Chippewa Motel is going to remain in my past. I deserve better than the service I received at my stay here.

I misremembered it as being the same one that I stayed at previously (which is next door), oops. Checking in was easy, they send you a link for mobile check in which saves a tiny bit of time since you can upload a photo of your ID and then they just have to give you a key when you arrive. The room is spacious, with two queen beds, a microwave, and a mini fridge. There was a used washcloth in the bathroom of the first room I stayed in, which gave me the ick. The hair dryer in the first room did not work, so I had to leave in the morning with wet hair (not super ideal in January). The walls are very thin and I heard the person in the room next door coughing all morning. My second and third stays were better, with cleaner rooms. There is a pool and hot tub which I didn't check out. They used to have a complimentary breakfast station, but between my second and third stays, they converted that space to a 24/7 convenience store with snacks. Overall this is not the best spot, but it's a basic 2-star motel.

After paying more than we should have and dealing with all that I lost it and told him to shove it and I will never be back!!! Rant over

They had plenty of parking, but wished they had better signage for Hotel Check In (it's on the right of the main entrance) The guest rooms weren't overly nice, but they had lots of buttons for the lights and shades which made it easy to turn everything on or off in the room. The bathroom even had a heat lamp which would be great for a cool visit. The pillows were some of the best hotel pillows I've had. I even slept with my hands between two of them! The casino was a good size with lots of slots, video poker and table games. They even had my favorite, Let it Ride. Although I didn't win, it was fun to play again as it seems to have just died out. The dealer was super friendly and talkative too, and not in an annoying way. Food options were good with nice options as well as a food court, sports bar, and coffee shop. It was enough where you didn't need to leave for a few days. I was there for a conference and the staff and food/drinks they offered were on the better side of average. While I wouldn't go out of my way to go here (i.e. a 2 hour drive from GRR airport), if I was in the area, or 30-40 mins away, I'd stop in again.

We walked up the desk and they informed us they had no internet, therefore they can't look up anyone's booking. They were writing down people's names and asking us what type of room we booked. It was just in our honor! We said we had two queens- they gave us keys and we went up to the room. It was super small and smelled pretty musty. The windows were filthy like a child with sticky fingers played finger painting on them - and the window was unlocked. No internet means no TV. The vending machines were empty. We got a bad feeling about it so we left. They said they couldn't issue a refund because we'd booked it through Expedia. We walked two doors down to the Holiday Inn. We got a very nice room and it was just $30 more than the dump we originally booked. One good thing I can say is they spoke with Expedia (we called them and they asked to speak with the manager there). The manager agreed to allow me to get my money back. I know the internet issue was not their fault, and they were very nice, but the place needs some TLC!!

Just the normal check your Id and make a deposit in case of damages. The hotel itself was very nice and super clean. The staff all seem great. The layout is a little confusing, but it works. The room itself was very nice. Got a ground floor room, maybe due to the dog. The room had two queen sized beds, the normal desk and chair. There was a microwave and mini fridge. Plus the TV was actually a decent size, unlike some hotels I stayed at. There's a small closet to hang your clothes. I really liked the bathroom with its walk in shower and the showerhead was nice and high so tall people can actually shower. The room was very clean. The bed was on the firmer side, but not too firm. I slept as well as I can in a different place than normal. Overall for a 3 star hotel this is a 5 star review. Would I return? Absolutely, this is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in for a very decent price. Plus my dog really loved having her own bed and the hotel too. P.s. the trails behind the hotel are very nice. My dog thought the smells were wonderful and I enjoyed the piece of nature with a nice pave trail.
