I was here to watch my tennis team play (who ended up winning all lines SWEEP) and I loved the views! So pretty! I could see the city so clearly. First off, right away, I got a great parking spot with a beautiful view, overlooking the city and the courts! The parking lot seems kinda small/medium, I can imagine it gets filled up, but I was lucky enough to get a spot. It seems easy enough to get street parking outside though if the lot fills up. Inside, there is a room to the left when you enter with a TV and chairs/tables. That day they had US Open matches on. We were setup here for a potluck, to be enjoyed later post tennis. There's then a patio view where you can look down at the courts/people playing, and the city view. Then there are stairs leading down to the courts! The courts were very clean, well-maintained, and brightly painted! I'm comparing to the public courts of Oakland lol which can sometimes be rough - sometimes there is a lot of foliage from nearby trees/nature, fading paint, cracks, holes in nets, etc. These courts were pristine compared to what I'm used to! I met some OHTC members through the event, and everyone was very nice. They were even convincing me to join, and I would consider! Employees there as well were very nice and helped me with any questions I had. I hope to have more events here, rally as a guest, or to join one day!

Well, some of the people thought I was lost and wondered why would a Chinese woman attend a picnic which was predominantly African-American. I mentioned who invited me and that I was also a 6th grade classmate to a guy (CO'70) who was on their football team. Thereafter, it was cool. (Hey, I am friendly, I don't bite even though I am a Lady Bulldog from Tech. I got a few laughs.) DeFremery Recreation Center is a Victorian style building in DeFremery Park, which is located in the heart of West Oakland on 16th & Adeline. It is a very spacious park (9.5 acres) with plenty of picnic areas, shade trees and a swimming pool. Other features include tennis courts, basketball courts, softball field and a skate park. The center itself offers a variety of activities (cultural, educational and recreational) to teens and youths. They also have African-American dance programs and day camp during the summer. Although there was another event in Oakland's Dimond District (Oaktoberfest) occurring at the same time, my husband and I could not be at two different venues at the same time. Since I don't drink beers, ales, brews, etc., we decided to head over to Defremery for a cultural festival. Purpose of my visit: The Oakland Black Cowboys Association held its 42nd annual parade and festival. We arrived late and missed the parade. However, we lucked out and found street parking next to the park. There was no driving around the blocks to find parking. I later found out somewhere in the park there was a parking lot. The park was filled with a few food and clothing vendors, information booths from different organizations and my favorite - the American Black Beauty Doll Artists. The organizer of the Festival of Black Dolls Show and Sale gave me the 411 as to when to look forward to the event. Stage was also set up for music and live entertainment. Eats: Oxtail with red beans & rice, greens and cornbread. For $12, the portion was generous and quite filling. The meal was enough to feed two people. Purchase: two cowboy hats and two T-shirts from the Oakland Black Cowboys Association. Fun time for families with children. I know one thing, my husband and I will mark the calendar on the first Saturday of October for a visit to DeFremery Park.

What an awesome spa treatment! I've been a member for two years and love the pool and the yoga classes. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Two years ago I booked an introductory tour and swim reservation, and I was immediately impressed and hooked! Parking is plentiful and the setting is very spacious and peaceful overlooking the water.

Thats $50 for half an hour. I would not pay for the membership here. There just arent better options nearby. Response to manager's comment: I have called and also asked the front desk various questions in the past and all seemed to have limited knowledge about the club / undertrained. However the main problem is they are also very unfriendly. Exception: The new gentleman who handles new member inquiries was very friendly and professional. To be fair. Regarding swimming "private lessons", at $100 / hour rate, please hire someone who is a professional or at least have some training at teaching swimming effectively. I could understand if its a $20 lesson at community center. For a club that charges premium rates, please provide services that are in line with the pricing.

They have good hours and the lifeguards at the front office are super helpful. The pool itself is a bit unusual - one end is quite shallow so it takes a bit of getting used to it for doing flip turns. There are always kids around - and quite often children's swim teams practicing. When I first started swimming there, I kept hear the name "Marco" being yelled repeatedly and thought "This must be the worst game of Marco-Polo ever!" I later found out it was that one guy on the kids' swim team who doesn't hear instructions and keeps swimming when everyone else is stopping. The hot tub is not bad - it's quite big. It's sadly full of people who all seem to want to talk OVER the noise of the jets. I can only imagine what it must be like for the people who live in the canyon all around and have to hear banal conversations, frequently alcohol fueled as there are many people with cans of beer in the hot tub, about personal relationships and compost bins. While parking is plentiful - there are plenty of people who block the road because they can't be bothered to park and walk 20 feet. There are even some rather entitled white male Tesla drivers who will criticize another person's driving despite the fact that they had no problems parking themselves (and the parking lines are many, worn down, and contradictory at best). There's definitely a bit of elitist element among the long time/regulars. Finally, the locker rooms are a horror. They are not kept clean and could do with re-tiling. The lockers are a mess. The toilets are miniscule and not much bigger than what you'd find in an airplane. I do confess that the source of my discontent was a visit to Villa Sport in San Jose last summer -- and the realization that for HALF the money, I could be getting way way more value. Let's not even get into the strange cash-only deposits and lack of policy to suspend membership when out of town or out of commission for long periods of time. It's a really great pool and club for families -- it's got picnic tables, grills, and you can bring the au pair as part of your membership. Two stars for single people without kids who prefer clean lockerooms - but five stars for families with lower standards and more money.

This building is gorgeous and so fun so aesthetic. The staff was super friendly. When I made a joke about my chalk, they were receptive and fun. Their store was pretty well stocked. Grab myself an adorable, red crop sweatshirt. They're set up was very organized. Literally zero drama. Highly recommend, and I'll be back.

It's now open through the end of the fall season, which is great, because that's when things start warming up. The facilities are nice and clean, and the pool is just immaculate and beautiful. The water temperature is about 82°, and it felt a little chilly upon entrance, but once you get in and start moving around, it's not that bad. It doesn't really get that crowded here, and they usually have recreation swim for two hours on the weekends. Cost to get in is three dollars for adults, and a dollar for children over six years old. Definitely cannot beat the price. Parking isn't too bad. As long as there is not an event going on. Also, you may have the way through some campers that are around the area, but the pool management has been doing a great job of keeping those away and not having them park right in front of the facility. Great pool, great price, and glad to have this option available for a warm day!
