Pros: - It is baby friendly with low slopes and shallow pretty much all around. - nice front desk guy Cons: -The water slide is never in service - locker rooms are smelly due to the mold and the floors are a bit slimey. Well, some of the people thought I was lost and wondered why would a Chinese woman attend a picnic which was predominantly African-American. I mentioned who invited me and that I was also a 6th grade classmate to a guy (CO'70) who was on their football team. Thereafter, it was cool. (Hey, I am friendly, I don't bite even though I am a Lady Bulldog from Tech. I got a few laughs.) DeFremery Recreation Center is a Victorian style building in DeFremery Park, which is located in the heart of West Oakland on 16th & Adeline. It is a very spacious park (9.5 acres) with plenty of picnic areas, shade trees and a swimming pool. Other features include tennis courts, basketball courts, softball field and a skate park. The center itself offers a variety of activities (cultural, educational and recreational) to teens and youths. They also have African-American dance programs and day camp during the summer. Although there was another event in Oakland's Dimond District (Oaktoberfest) occurring at the same time, my husband and I could not be at two different venues at the same time. Since I don't drink beers, ales, brews, etc., we decided to head over to Defremery for a cultural festival. Purpose of my visit: The Oakland Black Cowboys Association held its 42nd annual parade and festival. We arrived late and missed the parade. However, we lucked out and found street parking next to the park. There was no driving around the blocks to find parking. I later found out somewhere in the park there was a parking lot. The park was filled with a few food and clothing vendors, information booths from different organizations and my favorite - the American Black Beauty Doll Artists. The organizer of the Festival of Black Dolls Show and Sale gave me the 411 as to when to look forward to the event. Stage was also set up for music and live entertainment. Eats: Oxtail with red beans & rice, greens and cornbread. For $12, the portion was generous and quite filling. The meal was enough to feed two people. Purchase: two cowboy hats and two T-shirts from the Oakland Black Cowboys Association. Fun time for families with children. I know one thing, my husband and I will mark the calendar on the first Saturday of October for a visit to DeFremery Park.

I was here to watch my tennis team play (who ended up winning all lines SWEEP) and I loved the views! So pretty! I could see the city so clearly. The parking lot seems kinda small/medium, I can imagine it gets filled up, but I was lucky enough to get a spot. It seems easy enough to get street parking outside though if the lot fills up. Inside, there is a room to the left when you enter with a TV and chairs/tables. That day they had US Open matches on. We were setup here for a potluck, to be enjoyed later post tennis. There's then a patio view where you can look down at the courts/people playing, and the city view. Then there are stairs leading down to the courts! The courts were very clean, well-maintained, and brightly painted! I'm comparing to the public courts of Oakland lol which can sometimes be rough - sometimes there is a lot of foliage from nearby trees/nature, fading paint, cracks, holes in nets, etc. These courts were pristine compared to what I'm used to! I met some OHTC members through the event, and everyone was very nice. They were even convincing me to join, and I would consider! Employees there as well were very nice and helped me with any questions I had. I hope to have more events here, rally as a guest, or to join one day!

Right away you can tell this place is well run. The energy is welcoming, the staff actually cares, and the community vibe is real -- competitive but still friendly. Pickleball-wise, it's stacked. 8 indoor courts that are clean, permanent, and play great, plus 7 outdoor courts if you want fresh air. Runs are organized, people know how to play, and they're always hosting tournaments and competitive events, which I really appreciate as someone who plays a lot. Outside of pickleball, the gym setup is legit. Full cardio and strength equipment, unlimited group classes like yoga, barre, and more. Locker rooms are clean, with showers, sauna, and steam room -- clutch after long sessions. Pro shop is fully stocked and the staff is always down to help with gear or questions without being pushy. Small thing but funny -- they even added a ping pong table, which kinda says everything about the vibe here. Functional, fun, and community-first. If you're in the Bay and serious about pickleball, fitness, or just want a spot that's run right with good people, The Hub Alameda is definitely worth checking out. I'll be back for sure.

It's small and you can't see around the bathrooms so you don't really see the awesome playground behind the bathrooms. If you don't give this park a chance you might only see adults loitering in the parking lot and assume this park has nothing to offer. Please give it a chance! I just confidently park my car and walk past the bathrooms to the playground and really enjoy myself each time. The more people that use this park, the more we'll all feel safe and I think there will be less loitering in the parking lot. This is a place for families.

But this Oakland Parks and Rec pool feels like the little forgotten sister, perhaps because of it's location or the fact that Fremont Pool has almost the exact footprint and design of Temescal Pool, which was recently renovated. Despite it's shabby appearance, this pool is constantly filled with children and adults. The OPR website states, "Fremont pool is located at Fremont High School and serves the East Oakland community with fun, safe and recreational programs. Pool use includes swimming classes and lessons for tiny tots, children and adults, swim team practice, water aerobics, recreational swim and so much more." Despite the flooded changing rooms, I always enjoy taking the water aerobics class that occurs at the end of the day after adult swimming lessons. There are generally very few people that show up, and you couldn't ask for a better student to teacher ratio. At times, there are more swim and water aerobics instructors than swimmers themselves! And if you come on a lucky day where Martha is your instructor, be prepared to have the water workout of your life. This woman knows her stuff.
