First time visiting Sal's. Saw it somewhere before on a list of best local restaurants. We went on…read morea summer Saturday evening for dinner. Interesting place inside. We were quickly greeted and seated. We were in a side room with lots of windows. The unfortunate part was that our table, along with many of the others had an AC vent directly above the table blasting cold air down. I am not one to be cold, but I was. My wife ended up going to the car and finding a jacket to bring in for her to wear while at the table. The large table of folks beside us were also complaining about the cold air blowing on them. They seemed to get up, walk outside to get warm and come back in. That was the big negative of the evening. The service was very attentive and timely. The food didn't take all that long to come after we ordered. The menu was large and somewhat basic Italian restaurant fare. My wife had an Italian hoagie which she said was a standard Italian sandwich, nothing special. I had the baked penne al forno which was fine, nothing bold or flavorful about it, just sort of a boring pasta dish that needed a little something to make it taste better. My meal came with bread and butter, which was very good and a side salad.

It was fine but kinda bland. And it was dry. Needed some mustard in the worst way. The drinks were fine but the best thing about this place were the two gals who wanted to be at the Penguins game but were stuck watching it on TV. They got more and more worked up and more and more creative as they cursed every fan that won an autographed jersey. They were wishing calamity and destruction on the players, on the fans, even the city that the fans came from. By the end they would have beat up a boy scout or knocked over an old lady just to get one of those things. It was awesome. Thanks ladies. You saved the night.

Echoing patrons conversations too high. Seating is poorly designed and laid out. The upper deck is basically for 2-4 people, which is questionable, because it's the nicest part of the venue. Lower deck is horrible. Half of your guests get a view while the other half stare at a wall. Outside is nice but the humidity & rain ruin that. Laney needs an attitude check. Very unenjoyable personality. No spiel. No recommendations. I could go to Olive Garden for this level of service for half the price. Food was solid so kudos to chef. Service spotty. Table maintenance was atrocious. App plates still on table while entrees being served. No silverware change. Had to ask for water refills. Had to ask for silverware and plates for dessert. Just overall not good. As an experienced restaurant operator, this place has tremendous room for improvement and needs serious attention. That's all I got. Will NOT return.

Attention small business owners: if you want to know how to handle a customer complaint, check with…read moreJimmy. We won't include the details here, and we don't even have resolution yet, but we're so impressed with the conversation we just had that we wanted to share it. In general terms, our daughter was picking up food with her friends last night for their online order; there was an issue; she told us about it today; and my fired-up husband decided to call. Jimmy, the owner, came on the line immediately and did every single thing you'd hope a manger would do: listened, acknowledged, and apologized. So often, managers think that by apologizing, they're admitting to something awful, weakening their case, opening themselves up to litigation, or failing to support their employees. None of that is true. The respect that Jimmy showed us was accompanied by respect for the employee in question. He wanted to know more, as he said, "not because I want proof, but because I want to understand what happened and how we can avoid having it happen again." We haven't eaten here ourselves yet, and probably never would have if it weren't for that apology. For now, all the great things we've heard about Jimmy K's were reinforced by their drive to convert a complaint into a training opportunity. It's impossible to overstate how impressed we are that an owner would take the time on a busy Saturday night to make this discussion a priority. Again, small business owners should take note of how the investment of four minutes on the phone can turn one Yelp star into five.

Nothing unused sat for longer than a few minutes. I almost didn't go but I am very glad I did. I will return and I will be telling friends, family & followers to try this place. The castle aesthetic carries over to the inside. It was definitely a choice lol but it is rather lovely. Not your usual dining experience. Try this place. Edit to add: a group of five of us stopped in for the brunch buffet on Sunday. We made a reservation as the website states any party of five or more should make one. I was apprehensive due to past experiences of brunch buffets. Usually all the food tastes very similar and lacks seasoning. Not the case here. They had such a wide array of options. We had an extremely picky eater and they left full. The vibe was casual with just a touch of sophistication. Really happy we tried the buffet and will absolutely come again.
